BRITISH ASSOCIATION FOR THEADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE.
ANNUAL MEETING.[Held at Newcastle-ont-Tyne, August 1863.]
The Anatomy of a Yloung Chimpanzee. By D. EMBLE-TON, M.D. On December 11th, 1862, the body of amale chimpanzee, said to be about one year and a halfor two years old, which had died of bronclopneuimoniain a nmenagerie at Newcastle, was purchased for the Col-lege of Medicine. It was scantily covered with blackhair except around the muzzle and arms, where thehair was silvery grey. It was fresh and in good condi-tion, the trunk rather bulky, the chest large; the armsstrong anid muscular, the lhands partly covered on theback with black hair, whichl did not extend to thefingers; the palmar ssurface smoothi, naked, and of adusky flesh colour; the tlhunmb small and short, mea-suring witlh its metacarpal bone two inches, the middlefinger beirg five irnches long. The legs were compara-tively short and weak, but fleshy to thle heels ; the feetrather more covered on the dorsum-l with hatir than thjeband ; the toes and the sole resembled in smoothness, absence of lhair, and colour, the corresponding parts ofthe hands; the great toe was freely detaclhed from thicothers, and resemblinig a strong thumb, measuring witlhits metatarsal bone twvo inclhes and a lhalf; the third toethree inches and a half. The thumb appeared muchshorter, slendel-er, and weaker than the otlher fingers -
the great toe thicker, stronger, and shorter than theother toes. The whlole body weighed 16 lbs. 6 oz. avoir.dupoise. Thlere exist thirteen pails of ribs, anid there-fore thirteen dorsal vertebrT ; and the number of lunmbarvertebre is reduced to fouir. The diaplhragm wvas wellarched, and very strong; the psoas parvus muscle watspresent, and attached as in a roan. The opponens pol-licis muscle vas waniting; the others appeai-ed to be dis-posed as those of the h1uman lhan(l. Professor Huxleyhaving mainitained, in his llaIt's Place in tile Creation, that the hin-d limib of the so-called Quadrumana is nota hand,9but in reality a foot, it was necessary to directparticular attenitioni to the muiscles alId tendons of thatpart. Tlle posterior region of the leg is flat, and rathlerbroad, and the fleslh parts of the lateral muscles arecontinnied down to the ancles; tl-he gastrocnemii al ethe principal featule hiding the presence of the solews, and the plantaris is absent. The peroneus brevis, whiclh
is inserted into the fifth metatarsal bone, arises abovethe peroneus loingis; the tendon of which, passing be-hind the outer ancle, runs obliquely into the sole of thefoot. Next internal to the peronii lies the rather slenderextensor longus digitorum, the four tendons of whichpass to the four outer toes. Between this muscle andthe edge of the tibia lie three miiuscles, one being agood deal overlapped by the otlher two. These two sendtheir tendons to be inserted, the inner into the innerside and under part of the first cuneiform bone; theou7ter into the base of the metatarsal bone of the greattoe. The third miuscle, at first deeply placed, comesout, a little above the ancle, from beneath the othertwo; and its tendon, lying between that of the outer ofthe two and the tendon of the long extensors, runs to beinserted upon the dorsal surface of the base of the firstplhalanx of the great toe. On the dorsum of the foot, tothe short extensor of the toes, a broader muscle, andextending further towards the inner side of the foot, than in man, bv meanas of a considerable superaddledslip, which diverges abruiptly inwards frorlm the otherpart of the muscle, and is inserted into the base of thesecond or terminal phalarx of the great toe.Every toe then, in tlie chiimpanzee, has, at least a
long and slhort extenisor for its phalanges, whilst thegreat toe has an extensor for its imietatarsal, another forits cuneiform bone. Tlhus it may be said that there arefour rnuscles of the great toe to ensure free and variedmobility in the sense of extension; the fifth toe lhas, asin man, in additioni to its plialangeal extensions, the pe-roneeus brevis attached to its metatarsal. Of the fourextensions of the great toe the two innermost appear torepresent the tibialis ar-iticus of human anatomry,d(ividedto secure variety of motions in the root of tlhe gr-eat toe;the next would quite answer to the extensor propriuspollicis only, it is inserted into the base of the first in.stead of the terminal phalanx; the fourth or short exten.sor is a new foot-muscle, unrepresenited in either thehand or foot of mani.
In the sole of the foot the three superficial muscles, the abductor pollicis, the flexor brevis digitorum, and thleabductor minimni digiti, are, as in the hurnan sole, thefirst to cormie into view. On detaching the last twofrom the heel-bone, we find, towards the outer border ofthe foot, a flexor brevis ininimi digiti, and in the middleregion the lumbricales and the tendons of the long andshort flexors of the toes, with a srnall muscle accessoryto the lumbricales arising fromn the long flexor tendonbefore its (division. No mnusculus accessorius arisingfrom the os calcis and attached to the long flexor tendonwas observed. At the outer border of the foot, on ab-ducting strongly the great toe, which can thus be broughtto neai-ly a riglht angle with the r-est of the foot, the ab-ductor pollicis is seen as a short muscle, extending fromthe lheel to the base of the first phalanx of the greattoe;and close to it lie the two halves of the flexor brevispollicis, separated by the tendon of the flexor longus pol-licis. Between tlhe great toe and the seconid is theadductor pollicis. All these muscles of the great toe arehighly developed and of great power; and if they all acttogether will very forcibly pull the great toe towards themiddle of the sole of the foot; if the flexors of the other
Loes are ma(de to act at the same time the resuilt will bea strong, ratlher oblique opposition of the great toe tohe other four toes: and if an object like the branch of atree be placed in the sole, it will be grasped with mluchlirmness. There remains, however, to be noticed an in-:eresting arrangement by whiclh that action will be en-7orced anid made more secure. The muscle called flexorollgus pollicis is largely developed in the leg, extendinglown to the inner ancle, and ends in a strong tendonvhichl runs inito the sole of tlle foot close to the os calcis, mnd apart, as in man, from the othier tendons. Oppositeo tlhe foot of the great toe, it divides into two slips; one,be lesser, runs outwards at a certain angle, being co;-

CALABAR BEAN PAPER.LETTER FROM JOHN W. OGLE, MI.D.
SIn,-In Dr. Harley's communication to your lasinumber (September 5th), regarding the Calabar bean,I see that the "paper" preparation of this agent, as fur-nislhed by MIessrs. Bell and Co., is contradistinguishedfrom that supplied by 'Mr. Squire as being unable toneutralise the effect of atropine paper. Having myselfused the paper made by 'Mr. Squire extensively for thepurpose of removing the dilatation of the pupil obtaine(dby thle application of belladonna and atropine (as re-late(d in a former number of your JOURNAL), it appearedto ine only riight to reassert that, in mny hands, itiproved amply effective for the purpose. As I stated inthe renmarls alluded to, a very muclh smaller portion ofthe atropine paper than the sqiuares commonly used* ismnore than sufficient to induce dilatation of the pupil;ant], if suich a small portion be used, the strenath ofSquiire's Calabar bean paper will be fouind sufflicient. All that is required, in having recourse to it as antago.nising the effects of the atropine paper, is to insert, inthe first place, a sufficiently small portion of the atropinepaler, nod subsequently a suifficiently large portion oftle Calabar bean paper. Of course, there can be nodifficulty in strengthening tle solution of the Calabarbean paper so as to niake it potent enough to cope withmore ot' the atropine paper. Thie first paper of the kindmatide, prepared, I believe, by ynself (following Mr.Streatfo.ild as regards the atropine), wvas intenided to beequivalent to the atropine paper in strength. Unfortu.nately, its preparation failed: and thern Mfr. Squire'sappePre d. I am, etc., JOHN W. OGLE.

TESTIMONIAL. An epergne or candelabrum is to bepresented to Mr. T. W. Crosse of Norwich, by the Nor-wich Pathological Society.EFFECT OF AGE OF LYMPH ON VACCINATION. Otot of
one hunndred cases of vaccination with dry lymph storedin stoppered bottles for periods rarely exceeding threeweeks, only three wvere unsuccessful; but of three opera-tions with dry lymph which had beeen kept elevenmonths, two were unsuccessful, the other producingonly one vesicle; and a single operation performed withlymph wvhich had been kept for eighteen months alsofailed. (Vaccination Report.)SOURCES OF VACCINE LyxpmI. Mr. Robert Ceelv of
Aylesbury, has inspected all trle sources whence lymph iscontributed to the National Vaccine Establishment. Mr.Ceely's inspection did not lead him to recommend anychange of the present sources of supply. On the con-traryin those stations which (as being most frequented)gave, him the best opportnnities of forming concltisionson the subject, he " met with abundant evidence of theperfectly satisfactory character of the lymph there inuse." SUPERSTITION. A curious superstitious notion pre.vails in Somersetshire, if the ft-llowing statemeut is tobe believed. A local paper reports that in Taunton achild being attacked Nvith scarlatina, and death ap.parently inevitable, a jury of matrons was empanelledfor the purpose of considering the extremity of the case.To prevent the child "' dying hard," all the doois, drawers, boxes, and cupboards were thrown wide open, the keys taken out, and the body of the child placedunder a loam, whereby a sure, certain, and easy passsageinto eternity could be secured. Watchers held theirvigils throughout the night, and in the morning thechild, to the surprise of all, did not die, and is now gna.dtally recovering.AN EDnTort's APoIoGY. The rebel invasion of tais

SLErPIN-G IN THE MOONSHINE. A boy, 13 years ofage, namiied Henry Lowry, residing near Peckham Rye,was onA Tues-day night expelled his home by his motherfor some trifling misdemeanour. He at once ran awayto a cornfield close by, and on Iying down in the openair fell asleep. He slept throughout the night, whichwas a moonlight one. Some labourers on their way towork, seeing the boy apparently asleep, aroused him;the lad opened his eyes, but declared he could not see.He was conveved home, and from thence to an ocularinstituition, wlhere medical advice was obtained. Thesurgeon affirmed that the loss of sight resulted fromsleeping in the moonshine. The boy is totally blind, and few lhopes are entertained of his ultimate recovery.
VACCINATION. The Poor Law Board report that in theyear ending at Michaelmas last 702,181 children wereborn in England and Wales, but only 4:37,693 personswere successfully vaccinated in the year by the publicvaccinators. In 1860, with a smaller number of births,485,927 persons were successfully vaccinated bythepub.lie vaccinators. A considerable number of children areprobably vaccinated by private Tnedical practitioners whoomit to register them, and many children die before theage (thlree months) at which vaccination is usually per-formed; but still there can- be no doubt that, partly fromcarelessnless or indifference, and partly from prejudiceagainst vaccination, the provisions which the law hasmade with the object of extending the practice of vacci-nation lave not been properly effectual.
AIMERICAN MILITARY SURGEONS. We may safely chal-lenge the governments of the old world to improvisearmies of such magnitude, and supply them with a me.dical corps from civil life which will present a morehonourable record. Whatever may have been our de-ficiencies in the knowledge of military surgery hereto.fore, it is now certain that we shall soon, if we do notalready, suirpass all other nations in our proficiency inthis department. This war has called into active ser-vice not far from five thousand surgeons. Their dutieshave been of the most varied and active character. Theyhave foliowed their commands to the camp, to the field, and to ilhe hospital, and thlu-s have become personallyfaamiliar with every branch of the army medical service. But hiundreds of practitioners have. been compelled bysickness or interest to retire to civil life, and other hun-dreds have taken their places. (American Mlled. T'imZes.)A LITERAL PROFESSION. It is certainly a somewhat
remarkable circumstance that, with suclh a wide field foranatomical and pathological investigation, the nmedicalschool oi Romie is behind all the others in Italy, and hasnot pro(duced a really great man, or even a mediical workof superior merit, during the present century; nor is itless sur-prising that in tllis great city, the real capital ofItaly, t!tore is not a single medical periodical pulslished, nor is there a meldical society or scientific association ofany desclription in this enlightened city of nearly 200,000inhabitants. I have inquired of native Romans thereason of this, anid have been answered that no secularsocieties or organisations are permnitted here, on accountof the danger of their being converted into political as-sociations and used for revolutionary purposes. U.WrIOLESOSME FOOD. An Act of parliament waspasseed on the day of the prorogation to give additionalpowers for the enforcement of the Nuisances RemovalAct of 1-55. It recites that the provisions of the Actcite(d witol regard to the inspection and seizure of dis-eased wod unwholesome meat are defective, and that itis expedlient that the same should be repealed, and thatothe- antd more effectual provisions in that behalf shouldbe substituted. The Act declares that the medicalofficer of health or inspector of nuisances may at allreasonable tilmies inispect andI examine any animal car-

In case any such foodappear to him to be diseased, or unsound, or unwhole.some, it shall be lawful for him to seize the same, orcause it to be seized and carried away by any officer, ser-vant, or assistant in order to have the same dealt with bya justice; and if it shall appear to the justice that anysuch animal, or any of the articles mentioned is diseased,or unsournd, or unwholesome, or unfit for food, he shallorder the same to be destroyed or so disposed of as toprevent such animal or article from being exposed forsale, or used for such food; and the person to whomsuch animal or article belongs, or did belong at the timeof the sale or exposure for sale, or in whose possession,or on whose premises the same is found, shall on con-viction, be liable to a penalty not exceeding £20 forevery animal or article so found; or at the discretion ofthe justice, without the infliction of a fine, to imprison.ment in the common gaol or house of correction for aterm of not more than three calendar months. In caseany person shall in any manner prevent such medicalofficer of health or inspector of nuisances from enteringany slaughterhouse or building where such food is keptfor sale, or shall in any manner obstruct or impede himor his servant or assistant, when duly engaged in carry.ing the provisions of this Act into execution, such per-son shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding £5. TheAct and the Nuisances Removal Act for England (1855)are to be read and construed together as one act.THE CHANNEL FLEET AT GLASGOW. On the evening of
Saturday, the 5th inst., the Faculty of Physicians andSurgeons of Glasgow entertained at dinner, in theirhall, St. Vincent Street, the medical officers of the Chan-nel Fleet, on their visit to the Clyde. Flag-SurgeonSloggett, Surgeons Jack of the Royal Oak, Wells of theWarrior, Speer of the Liverpool, Scott of the Resistance,Courtney of the Defence, and Comrie of the Edgar, along with Assistant-Surgeons Jones and Dr. Hainies, were present. Staff-Surgeon Lewins, and Surgeon Leitch,of the 41st regiment, now in Glasgow, were also present. The President, Dr. Ritchie, who was in the chair, in ad-dition to the guests of the evening, was supported byProfessors Rainy, Pagan, and Easton; and the Visitor,Dr. J. G. Fleming, who was croupier, by ProtessorGairdner, and by former presidents, Dr. A. D. Anderson,Dr. Hunter, and Dr. Lyon. A large number of the otherFellows of Faculty were present at dinner. After tlleusual loyal and patriotic toasts had been drunk, " TheMedical Department of the Navy" was given by the Pre-sident, and that of the " Army" by the Croupier, in ap-propriate speeches. The existing high effliciency of themedical department of the Navv, and the improved po.sition of naval surgeons, was favourably contrasted withtheir past condition in former periods, and to them wasaccorded the credit of having achieved, through manydifficulties, so much for the sanitary welfare of the ser-vice. It is not often that the medical officers of thepublic services have an opportunity of meeting with acollective body of their professional brethren engaged incivil practice; and really on this occasion all presentseemed to have much pleasure and gratification fromthe cordial and kind interchange of friendly feelings andsentiments whicb took place throughout the evening.(Glasgow Daily Herald.)HOSPITAL OF SAN SPIRITO. bank of the Tiber, near St. Peter's. It is said to havebeen founded by a Saxon king. It was, however, greatlyenlarged at the end of the twelfth century by Innocent III,and has gone on increasing so as now to form almost asmall town within itself, being very richly endowed; not

only possessing large landed property in the city, butalso mtuch of the territory between Rome and CivitaVecchia. This Pope confided it to the Brother8 of theOrder of San Spirito, from which it derived its name.Successive Popes have done much to enlarge and enrichit. Benedict XIV, e.g., in 1751, added a museum andanatomical theatre; the museum was increased withvery choice specimens by Pius VI; still Pius VII addeddissecting-rooms, baths, and many other requisites. Themost important repairs, however, in its management andadministration, as the Romans think, have been made bythe present Pope, Pius IX, in the appointment of twentyCapuchin priests to its spiritual assistance, and theerection of a house for them within the inclosure, sothat some of them might be in constant attendance onthe patients both day and night. The entire establish-ment consists of a male and female hospital, entirelydistinct; divided, as usual, into medical and surgicalwards, clinical wards for each sex, with a lecture andoperating-room adjacent; a military hospital for thePapal troops, a foundling hospital, and a lunatic asylum. There is space for about 2500 beds in the civil hospital, though ordinarily there are only about 650 medical andsurgical cases in the wards. There are, besides, 450lunatics. 15,000 patients are annually admitted; themortality averaging about eight per cent., or even less.During the summer months the wards are filled withcases of intermittent and remittent ever from the Cam-pagna, as well as large numbers from the city; iil thewinter season the number is greatly reduced. The smallamournt of mortality is attributed to the great proportionof malarious diseases admitted, which are usuallypromptly cured by large doses of quinine. I counted abouttwenty beds in the clinical ward, some of them unoccu-pied. There is a tolerable pathological muscum in thehospital, as well as a collection of instruments, and alibrary, most of which were bequeathed to the institutionby the eminent physician, Lancisi. AN ADVERTISEMENT.-The following advertisement has bben for-warded us for publication. We regret to see a profession treatedin such a trade-like fashion; but so long as the advertisingcolumns of the daily journals are made the vehicle for the publicdisplay of the titles and qualificationis of the " Great Ones of theCity", we shall not be surprised to see such things as the follow-ing in our country journals.

UNQUALIFIED ASSISTANTS.-SIR: At a village in a midland county, there has been practising for the last eighteen months a youniggentleman without any medical or surgical qualification, atnd whohas not even attetnded his hospital practice or lectures. He isaided and abetted in his illegal course by a surgeon of some yearsstanding in a neighbouring county town, about nine miles distanit, who goes over when sent for, and lends his name, in order thatthe gentleman may recover his debts, and apply for, and hold sickclubs; thus enabling him to evade the Apothecaries' Act, anid the36th clause of the new Medical Act, to the injury of the qualifiedpractitioners in the neighbourhood, and the common interests ofthe profession.
I have the best authority for stating that the gentleman is nieitherthe partner nor the assistant of the town surgeon; althouigh Icannot suppose for a moment that the latter lends his name for anidea only.
Will you kindly favour me with your opinion through the me.dium of your pages of the whole proceeding; and also poinit outsome plan by which this flagrant evasion of our medical enact-ments can be prevented. I am, etc.,August 1863. VINDEX.LThere can be no doubt that the whole proceeding, as here
described, is utterly irregular, and utterly unworthy of members ofour honourable profession. How it can be stopped legally, weknow not. There are many bad things which no law can touch;and which can only be done away with by the force of public andprofessional opinion. The whole question of unqualified assist-ants is a very important and difficult one. As far as we can see, there is nothitng beyond respect for professional credit to preventa medical man keeping half a score of assistants, and locatingthem, as jackals, in the villages around him. So long as the lawallows any one, qualified or unqualified, to practise medicine, wefear tbat there is no remedy, beyond what is derived from thescorn of good men, for the case here referred to.
