1HIS list of British medical periodicals is an attempt to continue Mr.W. R. Le Fanu's British Periodicals of Medicine; a Chronological List. Itcovers the period 1938-61, but only those periodicals published in GreatBritain and Ireland are included, the material of the "British Lands" ofMr. Le Fanu's list being excluded. Countries like Canada, Australia,India, and Pakistan, though members of the Commonwealth, are now in-dependent sovereign states and publish a large number of medical periodi-cals of their own.

Reports of societies and hospitals have not been included and neitherhave the various colloquia or progress volumes which appear more orless annually. Although material on the periphery of medicine, like anti-vivisection, spiritual healing, and chemists' journals, has been excluded,medicine has in general been treated more broadly than in Mr. Le Fanu'slist in recognition of developments in the last two or three decades.The periodicals in this supplement have been arranged in a numbered

alphabetical list, this being thought the most useful arrangement, but forconvenience an appendix has been added in which the journals, indicatedby their running numbers, have been arranged according to the year inwhich they began publication.To obtain particulars of some journals has been difficult, and the com-

piler suspects that in a few instances periodicals may actually have ceasedpublication or unhappily have been completely overlooked. He recordswith great appreciation the assistance and encouragement he has receivedfrom Mr. W. R. Le Fanu and wishes to thank Mr. C. H. Fleurent of theBritish Medical Journal for permitting him to see the third edition ofWorld Medical Periodicals while still in proof and Dr. F. N. L. Poynterfor allowing him to consult the periodical catalogs of the Wellcome His-torical Medical Library.
