Product overview

To complement its verstile range oflinear motion products, SKF hasintroduced the LLE linear guidancesystem, a highly efficient unit marketedunder the name „Speedi-Roll“. Inresponse to current market demandsthis product was developed giving highpriority to lightweight construction andease of installation.

Speedi-Roll is a linear guide systemwith high load carrying capacity,rigidity and torque resistance, consist-ing of a guide rail and a carriage witheither four or six rollers. The rail iscomposed of a drawn and anodizedaluminium body with hardened steelangle raceways fitted on each side.The aluminium base plate of thecarriage, which is also anodized,houses the factory-fitted rollers. Aspecial feature of this roller design isthe presence of elastic elementsaround the threaded bolt with which

the rollers are adjusted and fixed in thebase plate. This unique, patentedsystem avoids the risk of mountingerror and thus contributes significantlyto a more efficient and cost effectiveinstallation.

The units are supplied as standard witha light preload and, in order to cover awide range of applications, SKF offersthree sizes: LLE 15, 25 and 35. Thisallows for flexibility when selecting asystem to meet design parametres.Speedi-Roll guides operate effortlesslyand quietly. The high linear speedrating permits shorter cycle times andthe low friction between the rollers andrail means less power is required todrive the system. The hollow centres inthe sizes 25 and 35 rails provide areduction in mass of the total systemand can also be used as channels tocarry such things as wires or cables.The rollers are lubricated-for-life,greatly reducing the need for service.

To round-out the programme rollercovers and end stops are alsoavailable.

Accuracy

The system is offered with astraightness of 0,05 mm/m in thehorizontal and vertical planes. Systemswith higher degrees of accuracy areobtainable on request.

The permissible tightening torque forthe screws can be obtained from Table1a.

Mating parts should only befastened to the Speedi-Roll systemafter it has been aligned and secured.See table 1a for allowable tighteningtorques for fastening to the carriagebase plate.

If the carriage is removed from theguide rail, great care must be taken toavoid any tilting during refitting.

After complete checking of the linearaxes, the screw tops in the guide railmay be concealed by the capsprovided as part of the system.

Fitting of track rollersInstallation instructions

The guide rail and carriage elementsare precision products which must behandled with care. Installation shouldbe carried out in a suitably cleanenvironment.

The carriages are factory-mounted andadjusted on the guide rails, thuseliminating the need for any subse-quent adjustment on site.

Prior to installation the matingsurfaces should be cleaned and anyremaining burrs removed. Dimensionalaccuracy of all adjacent componentsshould be verified as being of an equalstandard to that of Speedi-Roll itself.

Removal of the guide from thepacking should not take place untilimmediately before installation. Theguide rail should be carefully placedupon the machine bed and secured byloosely fastening the attachmentscrews.

The guide rails can then be alignedor pressed against an abutment andthe screws finally tightened. Theyshould be aligned using suitablemeasuring equipment, taking the firstmounted guide as a reference.

When mounting the rollers in abaseplate the following instructionsshould be followed:

1. Insert the threaded bolts of the trackroller a through the mounting hole cin the carriage plate d.

2. Fit the support washer and locknute onto the track roller thread andlightly tighten. The track roller shouldbe restrained from axial but allow forradial movement.

3. Mount the carriage on the guide railb and check that it runs smoothlythroughout the stroke. Make surethe rollers all run without clearance.

4. Tighten the locknut e,and set screwf for sizes 25 and 35, to about 50%of the fixing torques specified intable1. To avoid twisting of thecarriage tighten both track rollers onthe same side of the guide rail beforetightening the remaining track rollers.An adjustment of the carriage canbe made by applying radial pressureinwards or outwards during tightening.This will compress the O-rings cadjusting the fit of the carriageassembly.

5. Check that the carriage still runssmoothly and clearance free. Thenfully tighten both track rollers on thesame side of the guide rail beforetightening the remaining track rollers.If the carriage does not run smoothly,release the locknuts and set screwsand repeat starting from point 4.

6. Finally, tighten the set screws (forsizes 25 and 35) to the full torquegiven in table 1b.

Calculation

The calculation of the forces actingwithin the Speedi-Roll assembly iscomplicated by the combination ofradial bearing type forces and linearmotion principles. The followingsection has therefore been simplifiedto allow for a more general under-standing and calculation of the effectsof applied loads.

The L10 life of the Speedi-Roll hasbeen derived from basic bearing prin-ciples using a nominal life of 100 000meters. The load capacity or the non-bearing comonents of the carriage andrail assembly are however the practicallimiting factors to be taken into accountwhen specifying a Speedi-Roll solution.See dimension table 5, page 10.

The nominal life expectancy of therolling elements is calculated and thebearing system as a whole is analysedin terms of its static bearing capacity(as a measure of protection againstoverload). Use is made of the generalequation (1) for the calculation of thelife:

Here, C represents the bearing load atwhich a life of 100 km travel isobtained. P is the constant magnitudein a given direction for the highestloaded carriage, thus determining theservice life of the linear motion system.

Radial bearing principles are not thelimiting factor in the Speedi-Rollassembly. The flexibility of the topplate and roller stub axles become thelimiting factor in any application. Theselimiting loads are defined on page 11and must not be exceeded.

P = F may be selected if constant loadconditions as defined apply duringoperation. In all other cases P has tobe determined as an equivalent vector.Calculation guidelines for such variableload assumptions are given in the SKF

Lubrication

Adequate lubrication of all compo-nents is essential in obtaining fullperformance of the Speedi-Roll-System.

The rollers themselves are lubricatedfor life and require no maintenance.The raceways are preserved and pro-tected but must be greased before theunit is put into operation. Mediumviscosity grease should be used.Mineral oil based SKF greases such asLGMT 3, LGEP 2 and LGEM2 aresuitable for virtually all applicationconditions.

It will be necessary to regrease therails after a period of time, dependingon operating parameters such astemperature and the grades of greaseused. Detailed instructionsmay be obtained from the SKF "LinearGuide Handbook", Catalogue 4185 E,Page 30.

Note: The dynamic load ratings (seetable 3) are defined as the load whichgives a bearing life of 100 000 m. It isassumed that the load is constant inmagnitude and direction and actsperpendicularly to the plane of travel ofthe unit and that the stroke is at leastone third of the total slide length.These loads must not be used as themaximum permissible system loads.

A system may be subjected to simul-taneous horizontal and vertical loads.The maximum permissible loads thatmay be applied are defined in thetables. These apply to loads actingthrough the centre of the carriage andalong its main axis.

In the case of complex loads, all com-ponent loads must be determined inorder of direction, summarized andcompared with the permissible systemloads.

Depending on the roller, variable loadangles can be generated by the axialand radial force components. Their in-fluence on the service life is express-ed by the coefficient for the influenceof the load direction fl. The value for fl

Rigidity

All sizes of Speedi-Roll, when usedwithin the permissible loads, giveadequate rigidity. Where guide rails arenot fully supported and have to serveas load-bearing members, the flexingcan be calculated according to theequations of elastic curves. Themoment of inertia may be obtainedfrom Table 4.

Calculation Example

A linear table is to be made up of twoSpeedi-Roll, size 25, rail guideassemblies. The length of travel is1500mm, and the stroke frequency5 min-1. The centrally applied load isconstant in magnitude and direction(see illustration).

The load is 1400 N and is expectedto be moved smoothly without anyshocks.

The life of the linear table, in km andhours of operation, as well as the staticsafety factor of the system is required.

Roller covers

In addition to protecting each rollerfrom surrounding contaminents, rollercovers (designated LLEHX 15, 25, 35)act as wipers on the rail raceway andthus help keep it free from dirt.

Due to their integrated functions andsimple design the roller covers helpreduce costs. The covers holdthemselves in position over the rollersand do not require any additionalfastening, and a funnel-type lubricationhole is provided for regreasing.Another advantage is the increasedcontact pressure of the roller cover lipwhich results from the fluid friction ofthe grease between the rotating trackroller and the stationary cover. Thisensures the wiping effect even at highspeeds.

End stops

The end stops (designation LLEHM 15,25, 35) can be locked in any positionon the guide rail. As safety devices,they can act as emergency stops forthe system in case of a failure in theelectronic control, or in manualoperation prevent overshoot of thecarrier. They are also reliable carriagelocking devices for the transportationand handling of the guide system.The design of the anodized aluminiumend stops is in line with that of theentire system and integral plastic stopsare present to provide further damping.
