• They must be easy to install on theshaft and sit firmly in position. Theymust be protected against contam-ination during mounting.

• Conditioning monitoring should bepossible to avoid unplanned stop-pages and prevent premature bear-ing replacement, just to be on thesafe side.

The SKF stepped sleeveThe particular adapter sleeve designfor the SYT units is a masterly piece oflocation technology. It is highly efficientand has a low cross section. The out-side surface of the sleeve and thebearing bore both have a saw-toothedprofile. When these profiles are axiallydisplaced against each other a veryreliable location of the bearing on theshaft will be achieved. The operation isexceedingly simple.

The benefit for the user is very quickassembly. It is simply a matter of push-ing the unit along the shaft and thenbolting it to the support.

The SKF plummer block housingRobust non-split plummer (pillow)block housings of grey cast ironenclose the bearings and efficientlyprotect them from external mechanicaldamage. The stiff design helps thehousings to retain their form. Theholes for the attachment bolts arecast. All housings are provided with a grease nipple, allowing lubricant tobe supplied direct to the bearing.

The housings of the SYT units arebased on the SNL plummer blockhousings of Dimension Series 5 –another state-of-the-art SKF product –and have the same high stiffness andgood heat conducting properties.They can also be quickly adapted toindividual applications.

If required it is also possible tosupply housings made of spheroidalgraphite cast iron. The units are thenidentified by a D in the designationprefix: SYTD.

The saw-toothed profileThe requirements were clear and simple – a sleeve was required having a relativelysteep angle of taper but at the same time a low cross section. The SKF answer isequally clear and simple – the sleeve andbearing bore both have a profile whichconsists of several equal tapered sectionsarranged one after another.

The reliable fixationTo obtain this a mounting ring with grub (set)screws has been added to the adaptersleeve. By tightening the screws the innerring is pushed axially along the sleeve andlocked in position.

Stiff designThe base of the SYT housings is reinforced.This reinforcement also surrounds the holesfor attachment bolts providing a reliable holdon the support surface. The preload forces of the bolts provide good contact with thesupport to make sure that the housing baseand thus the housing as a whole cannotdeform.

Markings for additional holesThe most suitable positions for additionalholes are clearly indicated on the casting. For example, if the housings are to beinstalled on T beams, four additional holes for attachment bolts can be drilled at theindicated positions. The most appropriateposition for the attachment of permanentcondition monitoring sensors is alsoindicated.

The sealsThe integral seals contribute to thecompactness of the ConCentra rollerbearing units. The factory grease fillprovides a suitable amount of thecorrect lubricant from the outset.These features make the ConCentraroller bearing units ready to mount andoperate at a modest cost.

There is a choice of two seal designsand both accommodate misalignmentand axial movements. End covers arealso available for SYT housings mount-ed on shaft ends.

The lubricantIn order for ConCentra roller bearingunits to perform correctly they are filledwith SKF LGEP 2 grease. This is a light-brown, high-quality lithium thickenergrease with EP additives and a mineralbase oil and is characterised by

• good lubricating properties underheavy loads and at low speeds,

• minimal lubricant loss under severeoperating conditions,

• excellent ageing resistance,• excellent water resistance, and• very good rust inhibiting properties.

Well lubricatedThe SKF LGEP 2 grease is well suitedfor ConCentra roller bearing unitapplications; it fills between 30 and 50 % of the free space in the housing.

Double-lip sealsThese seals allow excess grease to exit butexclude solid contaminants and moisture;the operating temperature range is –50 to+100 °C.

Additional series for inch shaftsThe standard range of ConCentraroller bearing units for metric shafts iscomplemented by several series andsizes of plummer block bearing unitsfor inch-size shafts of diameter 1 7/16

to 4 in, inclusive. These differ slightlyin their dimensions and designs. Therange includes units in the

• SYR .. N series, • SYE .. N series and • FSYE .. N series.

based on the SYR, SYE and FSYEplummer block units which have beensuccessful on the American market for many years. The most importanttechnical data for these units for inch-size shafts will be found on pages 32to 39.

Locating or non-locatingarrangementsGenerally two bearings are required tosupport a rotating machine component:a locating bearing and a non-locatingbearing. Consequently the SKFConCentra roller bearing units areavailable in two versions – a locatingdesign and a non-locating design.

A choice of sealsDifficult environments with a lot ofdust, dirt and dampness call for strongseals. For such environments thedouble-lip seals are the answer. Foroperation at higher speeds and whenthe environment is not so severe, thelabyrinth seals are more appropriate.Both seals are standard equipment.

Another choiceThe standard housings are made ofgrey cast iron. If even greater strengthis needed, housings of spheroidalgraphite cast iron can be supplied.

Other components on the shaftIn order to allow the units to be dis-mounted easily, a space of at least 40 mm should be left between the unitand adjacent components on the shaft(➔ fig ). This is necessary to provideaccess to the grub screws in the ringat the “DISMOUNT.SIDE”. The mount-ing and dismounting sides are markedon the housing (➔ fig ).

Bearing arrangements at shaft endsTo protect bearing arrangements onthe ends and to avoid accidents, endcovers are available for ConCentraroller bearing units of series SYT.These plastic covers are suitable foroperating temperatures from –20 to+100 °C and are snapped intorecesses in the housing bore.

The appropriate cover for a particularunit will be found in table which alsoprovides the value of the cover protru-sion.

Design of bearing arrangements

Arrangement of bearing unitsTo support a rotating component, e.g.a shaft, two ConCentra roller bearingunits are required: a locating bearingunit and a non-locating bearing (➔ fig ).

The locating bearing unit at one endof the shaft supports it radially andlocates it axially in both directions. Thenon-locating bearing unit at the otherend also provides radial support andmust allow axial displacements result-ing from thermal changes in shaftlength to take place. These are accom-modated between the bearing outerring and the housing bore.

The locating bearing unit should bearranged at the drive side (➔ fig ).1

TolerancesIn normal cases shafts machined totolerance h9 can be used. The cylin-dricity as defined in ISO 1101:1996should be according to IT5/2. For lessdemanding applications h10 and IT7/2may be satisfactory.

Surface finishThe surface roughness Ra to ISO 4288:1996 for the sleeve seating should notexceed 3,2 µm.

Attachment to thesupport surfaceConCentra roller bearing units haveholes in the feet to take attachmentbolts. The holes allow subsequentadjustment of housing position.

Support surfaceTo provide operational reliability and a long service life for the units, it is rec-ommended that the support surfaceshould have a surface roughness Ra ≤ 12,5 µm. The flatness tolerance(planicity) should lie within IT7.

Holes for attachment boltsThe ConCentra roller bearing units ofseries SYT have two cast holes in thefeet as standard. It is possible to drillfour additional holes in the series SYTunits if required by the application.The positions where these holesshould be drilled are indicated on thecasting. Details of the positions andsuitable dimensions for these holeswill be found in table on page 16.

Attachment boltsHexagonal headed bolts to ISO 4014:1988 are recommended. Where loadsact vertically towards the support sur-face, bolts of strength 8.8 are adequate.If the loads act at other angles strongerbolts to class 10.9 may be necessary.The recommended tightening torquesfor class 8.8 bolts are given in table on page 16.

PinsWhere the load acts vertically towardsthe support surface, the ConCentra rollerbearing units are adequately secured inposition by the attachment bolts. If

• the direction of the load lies between55° and 120° or if

• the load acts in parallel to the sup-port surface and exceeds 5 % ofthe breaking load P180°, the unitsshould be located against a stop orshould be pinned to the supportsurface. Information on the lines ofaction of the loads as well as thebreaking loads is given in tableon page 27.

The position for holes to take suchpins is indicated on the housing foot.Details of the position and size ofthese holes are given in table .

The housing surfaceThe housings of ConCentra rollerbearing units are painted blue. Thelayer of paint offers protection againstrust as specified by category C2, ISO12944-2:1998. This is adequate for themajority of applications.

The units can be repainted by the userif it is desired to have a uniform colourfor the machine or plant. When repaint-ing it should be remembered that

• the housing bore with its bearingshould be covered at both sides,e.g. with discs cut from cardboardor plastic,

• the grease nipple should bereplaced by a plug which protectsthe thread,

• the colour is resistant to normallyused low-alkalinity washing chem-icals; to avoid fretting effects on thesurface when washing colouredcastings, it is, however, alwaysimportant to follow the instructionsfrom the supplier of the washingchemicals, regarding concentration,temperature and time.

The label carrying the unit designation (➔ fig , page 15) is covered with a thin transparent foil, which can bepeeled off after repainting, leaving thedesignation clearly visible.

SealingConCentra roller bearing units areused in a large variety of applicationsso that demands can vary widely. Tomake the units suitable under extremelydirty conditions as well as under normalconditions but where circumferentialspeeds are high, these SKF units areavailable with a choice of contactingand non-contacting seals:

• double-lip seals (➔ fig ), nodesignation suffix, or

• labyrinth seals (➔ fig ),designation suffix TL.

The properties of these seals aredescribed briefly in the following.

When selecting the seal the mostimportant points to consider are

• the environmental conditions,• the circumferential speed and• the operating temperature.

If the operating temperature is particu-larly low or high, a check should bemade that the operating temperaturerange of the standard grease is suitable.

Double-lip sealsThe double-lip seal (➔ fig ) is a con-tacting seal. It consists of a double-lipnitrile rubber (NBR) seal vulcanised onto a pressed steel shell.

The steel shell sits firmly in the hous-ing bore and provides static sealing.The externally directed dust lip forms anarrow gap with the cylindrical surfaceof the mounting rings and protects the

internal seal lips against abrasivematerial from the environment. Therubber lips prevent the entrance of dustand moisture and retain the grease;they do, however, allow excess greaseto exit during relubrication.

The nitrile rubber has very good en-gineering properties which make it themost popular material for contactingseals. It has good resistance to manymineral oils and greases with a mineraloil base. It is also resistant to hot water.The operating temperature range liesbetween –50 and +100 °C, but briefperiods of operation at temperatures upto +120 °C are possible.

The operational speed limits for thedouble-lip seal can be found in theproduct table on page 29.

Labyrinth sealsThe labyrinth seal (➔ fig ) consistsof three sheet steel rings. Two of theseare mounted on the mounting rings,arranged at both sides of the bearing;they rotate with the shaft and act asflingers. The third ring is secured in thehousing bore. A narrow sealing gap isformed between this ring and theother two rings.

When starting up or after relubrica-tion of the ConCentra roller bearingunits, excess grease may exit throughthe seal.

The labyrinth seals can be operatedat the speeds quoted for the grease-lubricated spherical roller bearings (➔product table on page 29). There are nooperating temperature limits except thatimposed by the grease used in the unit.

2Fig1FigConCentra roller bearing units are lubri-cated with SKF LGEP 2 grease beforeleaving the factory. The quantity ofgrease fills some 30 to 50 % of the freespace in the housing. The LGEP 2 greaseis a high-quality lithium thickener greasewith a mineral base oil and it contains EPadditives. The grease is characterised by:

• little wear under difficult operatingconditions;

• good lubricating conditions underheavy loads and at low speeds;

• excellent ageing resistance;• excellent water resistance;• very good rust inhibiting properties.

It also fulfils demands for very smoothrunning.

ConCentra roller bearing units areequipped with a grease nipple AH 1/8-27 PTF as standard. This opens overthe annular groove with its three lubri-cation holes in the outer ring of thebearing so that the bearing can berelubricated. The threaded hole for thenipple has a 1/8-27 NPSF threadwhich also permits the use of greasenipples with R 1/8, KR 1/8 and M10×1threads.

The following accessories can besupplied to specific order:

• grease nipple M1 G 1/8 (➔ fig ) and

• nipple connection LAPN 1/8 (➔ fig ).

Replacement of the standard greasenipple AH 1/8-27 PTF with the nippleM1 G 1/8 must be made by the user.

The nipple connection LAPN 1/8allows the easy installation of com-ponents having a thread G 1/4.

RelubricationThe ConCentra roller bearing unitsshould be relubricated with a similartype of grease, i.e. SKF LGEP 2. Theappropriate quantities are given in theproduct tables.

Before relubricating, the greasenipple and its immediate vicinityshould be carefully cleaned. The useof high pressure cleaning equipmentshould be avoided.

When relubricating the greaseshould be supplied slowly as the bear-ing rotates. Excessive pressure shouldbe avoided as otherwise the seals maybe damaged.

The SKF grease gun 1077600 (➔ fig ) is most suitable for use withConCentra roller bearing units. It issupplied with a 175 mm extensiontube with automatic grip. A 500 mmlong pressure tube 1077601 is avail-able as an accessory. The SKF greasegun

• can be used for grease cartridgesas well as “loose” grease,

• has a robust design, and • is easy to use.

Correctly chosen and correctly mount-ed ConCentra roller bearing units arehighly reliable machine components –as long as adequate lubricant is avail-able and contaminants and moisturecannot penetrate.

In spite of this it is still advisable tomonitor the condition of ConCentraroller bearing units at regular intervalsor continuously, in order to detectbearing damage in good time and alsoto be able to assess the extent andprogress of the damage. It is thenpossible to plan the replacement ofdamaged units and avoid any un-planned stoppages. Routine checks ofthe noise and temperature should bemade and the units opticallyinspected.

Condition monitoring usingvibration analysisThe most reliable way of monitoring thecondition of ConCentra roller bearingunits is by vibration analysis (➔ fig ).This provides the best method of pre-dicting bearing damage. The ConCentraroller bearing units can be fitted withvibration sensors, and three locations

are provided on the housings for thispurpose.

SKF has a complete range of meas-uring equipment for condition monitor-ing, from light hand-held measuringpens to complex systems for perman-ent installation enabling the continuousmonitoring of bearings and machines.

The range also includes theMARLIN™ system (➔ fig ). Thismachine reliability inspection systemis designed for on site measurementsand allows data from over 2 000measuring points to be stored. Thesystem can be used to analyse thevibration velocity enabling machinemalfunction to be identified as well asthe envelope curve of vibration accel-eration to be produced which is usedto analyse the bearing function.

Double slot shimsTo enable to adjust for the heightdifferences between the supportsurfaces relative to the shaft, SKF cansupply double slot shims (➔ fig ) forthe ConCentra roller bearing units ofseries SYT. These shims, of seriesTMAS, are available in

MountingA label marked “MOUNT. SIDE/DISMOUNT. SIDE” shows the mountingand dismounting side, respectively, ofthe unit (➔ fig , page 15).

1. Determine the positions of thelocating and non-locating units.The locating unit should alwaysbe at the drive side.

2. Make sure that the base of theunit and the support surface areclean and free from burrs. For thesupport surface a flatness toler-ance within tolerance grade IT7 isrecommended. For less demand-ing applications IT8 may be satis-factory. Recommended max sur-face finish for the support surfaceis Ra = 12,5 µm. If the unit elevationis adjusted with shims these mustcover the whole contact area be-tween the unit and the supportsurface.

3. Make sure that the shaft is cleanand free from burrs and check thedimensional and form accuracy ofthe shaft. For the shaft a diametertolerance h9 and cylindricity toler-ance grade IT5 are recommended.For less demanding applicationsh10 and IT7 may be satisfactory.Recommended max surface finishfor the shaft is Ra = 3,2 µm. Lightlyoil the shaft bearing seatings with low-viscosity oil.

4. Mount any components which areto be on the shaft between thebearing positions.

5. Push the units on to the shaft withthe “dismounting side” leading.Leave 40 mm minimum spacebehind the unit to make dis-mounting possible.

6. Fasten the units to the supportsurface with the attachment bolts,but do not tighten.

7. Adjust the position of the units onthe support surface if necessary.

8. Position the shaft axially in the units.

9. Lock the locating bearing (SYT .. F)on the shaft.

9a. This is done by tightening thegrub screws in the “mountingside” ring using the hexagonalkey. Follow the tightening patterndepending on the numbers ofscrews (➔ adjacent illustration)and tighten 1/4 turn at the time.

9b. Tighten until the hexagonal keybows and comes at the samelevel as the mounted indicator. If a torque wrench is used therecommended tightening torqueis 7,4 Nm.

10. Check the unit alignment. Themaximum permissible misalign-ment of the shaft is 1,5°. Fullytighten the attachment bolts ofthe locating bearing unit. Therecommended tightening torquesare given in table , page 16.

11. Find the middle of the non-locating bearing seating in thehousing (SYT .. L)

– by supporting the shaft and– by pushing the unloaded

bearing from one end position inthe housing to the other.

11. If only thermal elongation of theshafts is expected it is recom-mended that the end positionopposite to the locating bearing be chosen as the seating.

12. Lock the non-locating bearing onthe shaft as under point 9.

13. Check the unit alignment. Themaximum permissible misalign-ment of the shaft is 1,5°. Fullytighten the attachment bolts ofthe non-locating bearing unit. Therecommended tightening torquesare given in table , page 16.

14. If applicable, snap the end coverinto the housing bore.

1. Clean the bearing position and allthe internal hexagons of the grubscrews. Remove the end cover (if any).

2. Remove any rust or damage overwhich the bearing unit is to bewithdrawn.

3. Support the shaft with itscomponents.

4. Loosen the attachment bolts.

5. Loosen the grub screws in the“mounting side” ring 3 or 4 turns.

6. Tighten the two grub screws in the“dismounting side” ring alternatelyby 1/4 of a turn until a noticeable“POP” is heard or felt. If no “POP”is heard or felt, continue to tightenthe dismounting screws until thelong end of the hexagonal wrenchbows as maximum approx. 20 mm.If still no “POP” is heard or feltplease follow the instructions givenunder the heading “Warning”.

7. Loosen the grub screws in the“dismounting side” ring again by 3 or 4 turns.

8. Remove the attachment bolts.

9. Withdraw the unit from the shaft.

10. If the application permits, it isrecommended to remove all theattachment bolts and to lift out thecomplete arrangement of shaft withConCentra roller bearing units andother components. Then proceed asdescribed under points 5 to 9.

WarningOn no account should the grubscrews in the “dismounting side”ring be further tightened if thebearing and sleeve do not comefree.

In such a case the followingprocedure should be followed.

a The grub screws in the“dismounting side” ring shouldbe loosened again by 3 or 4turns.

b Then the grub screws in the“mounting side” ring should betightened until the long arm ofthe hexagonal key starts tobend noticeably.

c The procedure described underpoints 5 and 6 should then berepeated.

General product data

DimensionsConCentra roller bearing units ofseries SYT have dimensions thatconform to ISO 113-2:1999, plummerblock housing series 5 and are thusinterchangeable with other housings tothe same standard.

Internal clearanceConCentra roller bearing units aresupplied with pre-adjusted C3 radialinternal bearing clearance for atapered bore. The size and number of mounting set screws have beenchosen to obtain the correct internalclearance when the unit is properlymounted.

MisalignmentConCentra roller bearing units canaccommodate angular misalignmentsof up to 1,5 degrees between thebearing positions.

Axial displaceabilityThe permissible axial displacementfrom the central position for non-locating ConCentra roller bearing unitsis min 1,1 mm and from the end posi-tion min 2,2 mm.

Minimum loadIn order to provide satisfactoryoperation, spherical roller bearings inConCentra roller bearing units mustalways be subjected to a given min-imum load, especially if they are tooperate at high speeds or are sub-jected to high accelerations or rapidchanges in the direction of load. Undersuch conditions the inertia forces ofthe rollers and cages and the frictionin the lubricant can have a detrimentalinfluence on rolling conditions in thebearing arrangement and may causedamaging sliding movements to occurbetween the rollers and raceways.

The requisite minimum load to beapplied can be estimated using

When starting up at low temperaturesor when the lubricant is highly viscous,even greater loads may be required.The weights of the components sup-ported by the bearing, together withexternal forces, often exceed the re-quisite minimum load. If this is not thecase, the bearing must be subjectedto an additional radial load, e.g. byincreasing belt tension or idling torqueor by the similar means.

SpeedsThe speeds at which ConCentra rollerbearing units can be operated dependon the seal design. Guideline valuesare given in the product tables.

The (thermal) reference speed listedin the product tables represent areference value that is to be used todetermine the permissible operationalspeed of the bearing subjected to acertain load and running with LGEP 2grease. Please refer to the SKFGeneral Catalogue, section “Speedsand vibration”. The values of thereference speed listed are in accordingwith ISO 15312.

For bearings with double lip seals,the speed is limited by the seal friction.

Load carrying ability of the housingsConCentra roller bearing units aredesigned for loads acting verticallytowards the support surface.

Guideline values for the breakingload P for housings of series SYT aregiven in table . Using these valuesand a safety factor which depends onthe operating conditions and reliabilityrequirements the permissible load canbe determined for the housing. Ingeneral engineering a safety factor of6 is often used.

In this connection it is important thatthe attachment bolts are properlytightened. When loads act at an anglein excess of 90° the bolts must beequally firmly tightened.

The guideline values for spheroidalgraphite cast iron housings can beobtained by multiplying the breakingloads given in table by a factor of 1,8.

The holding power of a ConCentraroller bearing unit depends on thefriction between the shaft and thelocking device. When correctly mountedthe locking device gives the ConCentraroller bearing unit a holding power ofapproximately 15 kN.

The standard range of ConCentraroller bearing units for metric shafts iscomplemented by several series andsizes of plummer block bearing unitsfor inch-size shafts of diameter 1 7/16

to 4 in, inclusive. These differ slightlyin their dimensions and designs. Therange includes units in the

• SYR .. N series, • SYE .. N series and • FSYE .. N series.

based on the SYR, SYE and FSYEplummer block units which have beensuccessful on the American market for many years. The most importanttechnical data for these units for inchshafts will be found on pages 32 to 39.

DesignationsThe complete designation of aConCentra roller bearing unit for inchshafts consists of:

• the housing series identification• the size identification, i.e. the shaft

diameter in inches, uncoded, and• supplementary designations

identifying design, seal and otherfeatures.

Other SKF bearing units

Other roller bearing unitsIn addition to ConCentra roller bearingunits, the following units (mountedbearings) are also available

• plummer block units in the SYR,SYE and FSYE series

• flanged units in the FYR and FYRPseries

• take-up units in the TBR series.

The mounted bearings have beenavailable on the American market formany years and have proved theirgood performance. They differ fromthe ConCentra roller bearing units inthe design of the bearing and itsattachment to the shaft. Instead of

the stepped sleeve, the bearings aresecured on the shaft by a lockingcollar with two grub (set) screws which pass through holes in the bearinginner ring.

These units with locking collar aredimensionally interchangeable withsimilar units on the American marketbut have an appreciable advantage inthat they incorporate SKF sphericalroller bearings.

SKF units of series SYR canreplace plummer block units ofseries P2B-SN 2000, ZA as well as P(E)-B22400 H; SYE units canreplace series E, EP-B22400 Hand ZEP; FSYE units with fourholes for attachment bolts in thefoot can replace series E, EP-B22400-FH and ZEP.

ConCentra ball bearing unitsConCentra ball bearing units are acompletely new addition to the SKFassortment. Units are available for

• metric shafts in the diameter range25 to 60 mm, inclusive, and

• inch-size shafts in the diameterrange 1 to 2 15/16 in, also inclusive

The units are based on the SKF SYcast iron plummer block design, which makes the ConCentra unitsdimensionally interchangeable. Theyare recommended for bearing applica-tions that operate at high speedsunder moderate loads and provide:

• quiet running with minimumvibration,

• long operating periods,• easy mounting and dismounting

with no damage to the shaft• minimal fretting corrosion

Y-bearing unitsY-bearing units are ready-to-mountand ready-to-operate bearing units.Instead of the spherical roller bearingsof ConCentra roller bearing units, they

incorporate Y-bearings based on deepgroove ball bearings in the 62 series.

SKF Y-bearing units are available ina variety of designs. The housings areavailable as

• plummer block housings,• flanged housings and• take-up housings.

All these housing designs are availablein grey cast iron, the plummer block andflanged designs are also produced inpressed steel and polyamide versions.

There are three different means ofattachment to the shaft. Thus, theinner ring which is extended at one orboth sides has

• two grub screws, or• an eccentric ring with one grub

screw, or• a tapered bore for adapter sleeve

mounting.

The choice is even wider than indicatedabove as there is also a choice of

• three seal variants,• two material variants, and• several different grease fills.
