Conference a Success OvereightypeopleattendedtheConferenceonLimeandLimeKilnsinCaliforniaHistorythatwashostedAugust8thand9thbytheFriends.Byallmea-sures,theconferencewasahugesuccess.Thiswasthefirsttimealargegroupofpeoplewiththiscom-moninterestmetandsharedinformation.AttendeescamefrommanypartsofCaliforniaandevenotherstates. Besides lectures, demonstrations, and exhib-its,participantsalsoenjoyeda tourof theCowellLimeWorksHistoricDistrictbyFriendsPresidentFrankPerry.JudySteentoldabouttheJordanfamily,wholivedhereinthe1850sandearly‘60s,andJanDekemaexplainedhowoneofthehistoricworkercabins isbeingrestored.ThetourwasmadeextraspecialbytheparticipationofHalHyde,whotalkedabouttheearlyuseofthehistoricbuildingsbytheUniversity,andJoAnnCacace,whosegrandfatherwasacooperandblacksmithatthesite. Theconferencenotonlyelevatedpublicaware-nessof theHistoricDistrict,butalsoraisedfundsforongoingeducationalprogramsandrestorationwork. Jordan,Esq.,nearSantaCruz.”Theillustrationshowsguestsarrivingforasocialevent,womeninhoopskirtsandshawls,meninfrockcoats.Horseshavealreadybeenunhitchedfromcarriages. Ontheversooftheillustration,writtenbyanelderlyhand,isthenote:“TakenwhenMr.Jordanwasalive.Heisstandingonthepiazza[and?]myself.”This inscrip-tionmusthavebeenwrittenbyMaryJordan, thewifeofAlbionP.Jordan.Jordan,withIsaacE.Davis,wasthefirstowneroftheranchandlimeworksonthepropertythatwouldbecomethecampusoftheUniversityofCali-fornia,SantaCruz.Today,thehouseisknownasCardiffHouse,thecampusWomen’sCenter.ItisoneoftheearlystructuresintheCowellLimeWorksHistoricDistrict. EdwardVischer, thenineteenth-century,German-bornartist and photographer. Vischer produced some oftheearliest imagesofCalifornia landscapes,missions,andresidences,includingnearlyadozeninSantaCruzCountyinthe1860s. Thoughundated,theVischerdrawingoftheranchhousemusthavebeenmadewhentheJordansresidedthere,betweenMay1864andJuly1865.Anewspaperarticlereportedthat“Mr.A.P.JordanisbuildinganewresidenceinthatmostdelightfulsituationoverlookingthetownandtheBayofMonterey,longsinceselectedasasight[sic]forthebuilding,nearthelime-worksofDavisandJordan”(Santa Cruz Sentinel,May14,1864).Fromthebroadfrontporch,onewouldhavehadasweepingviewofthefewfarmhousesthatdottedthelandscapebelowandofthebroadexpanseofMontereyBay. Coincidentally,A.P.JordanandMary(Perry)Jordaneacharrived inSantaCruz in1853.A.P.wasborn inBrunswick,Maine, in1826.HearrivedinCaliforniain
1849andinSantaCruzin1853.Thatyear,A.P.andhispartnerDavisacquiredlandandstartedtheburningandshippingof limeat thebaseoftoday’sUCSCcampus.A.P.wassoononhiswaytobecomingaprosperousandrespectedbusinessman. MaryElizabethPerrywasborninFalmouth,Mas-sachusetts,in1837,thedaughterofJohnandElizabeth(Greene)Perry.JohnPerryarrivedinSantaCruzabout1852.Thefollowingyear,hebuilt thePerryhomeandsentforhiswifeandtheirthreechildren,Mary,Charles,andAlphonso.Perrywasalreadyanestablishedcarpen-terbeforeleavingforCaliforniafromMartha’sVineyard,Massachusetts.Healsodrewhisownplanstoworkfrom.Perrybuiltseveralresidential,commercial,andpublicbuildingsinSantaCruz,someofwhichstillsurvive.The1864JordanranchhouseisattributedtoPerry. Marybeganteachingchildreninherparents’home

Theceremonywill takeplaceattheCookhouse,startingat4:00p.m.ParkingwillbeavailableintheBarnTheaterparkinglot.

andwasanassistanttoElizaFarnham,thenotedearlyfeministofSantaCruz.MarylivedlessthanablockawayfromFarnham’ssoulmateandwomen’srightsadvocate,GeorgianaBruceKirby. MaryPerryandAlbionJordanweremarriedinSantaCruzin1859.Ithasnotbeendeterminedexactlywherethey lived from thedateof theirmarriageuntil theymovedintotheranchhouse.Thecouplehadthreechil-dren.May(somesourcesciteasMary)bornin1860(diedin1862);followedbyaseconddaughter,Marion,in1862;andson,Peter,in1865.Thatsameyear,Maydied.
In1863theJordanstraveledtoSouthernCaliforniaforA.P.’shealth.TheSanta Cruz Sentinelexpresseditshappiness that,aftersixweeks,“ouresteemedfellowcitizen,A.P.JordanEsq.andhisladyhavereturnedfromtheirtriptoSanPedroandLosAngeles,…Mr.Jordan…returnsingeneralhealth,althougheitherfromhavingexperiencedmuchheavyweatherandseasicknessinthepassageupthecoast,orfromcomingsuddenlyintothebracingclimateofSantaCruz,hedoesnotfeelaswellaswhenbreathingtheIndianairofLosAngeles”(October24,1863). A.P.continuedtobeplaguedbyhealthproblems.Nevertheless,in1864theJordansmovedintotheirnewhome,andinMarchthefollowingyear,sonPeterAlbionJordanwasborn.InJuly1865,theJordanssoldtheirhalfinterestinthefirmofDavis&JordantoHenryCowellfor$100,000.Theyretained,however,other landandmanysharesintheCaliforniaPowderWorks,locatedatthesiteoftoday’sParadisePark.HopingthatachangeofclimatemightrestoreA.P.’shealth,theJordanfamilyleftforMaine.Eighteenmonthslater,onNovember14,1866,A.P.JordandiedinMaine.Jordan’sbody,accompaniedbyhis family, returnedby ship toSantaCruz, a trip
thattookovertwomonths.HewasburiedinEvergreenCemeteryonJanuary26,1867. AnewspapertributetoA.P.spokeofhimas“uni-versallyesteemedandlovedbythosesustainingbusi-nessrelationswithhim…[and]thathewasagoodmantoworkfor,beingkindandaffable,andcaringfortheinterestsofhisemployees.Hewasanobleandwarmfriend,alwayspleasant,andquickwithawordfromtheheart.Hewasareadyandinterestedcitizen,perfectlyuprightindealing,andeverwillingtohelpagoodcausewithtruegenerosity”(Santa Cruz Sentinel,February2,1867). MaryJordanwasoneof thewealthiestwidowsintown.Sheandhertwosurvivingchildren,MarionandPeter, livedonUnionStreet,next to thePerry familyhome,aboutamile fromtheold Jordanranchhouse.In1873MarywedprominentphysicianandbankerDr.PierceB.Fagen,awidowernearlytwentyyearsherseniorwithtwogrownsons.In1885shehadtheoriginalPerryfamilyhomemovedashortdistance, fromthecornerofMissionandUniontoitscurrentsiteat114EscalonaDrive (formerlyDavisStreet),near theendof JordanStreet.ThePerryhousehasbeendesignatedaSantaCruzCityLandmark.Marythenhadconstructedontheorigi-nalPerryfamilyhome-siteaQueenAnnemansion; itsgardenswereamongthefinestinthecity.Themansionwasdemolished in1955 foraproposedbusinessdis-trictbypass.Thelotsatemptyforthreedecades,untilitbecamethesiteofthecurrentcharacterlessofficebuild-ingandparkinglot.
DaughterMarion JordanmarriedHerbertCox, ateacherandvice-principalofSantaCruzHighSchool.Theyhadonechild,Gertrude.SonPeterAlbionJordanbecameawholesalegrocerandimporterandmarriedBlancheHartwell.Theyweretheparentsof fourchil-dren.ThePeterJordanfamilylivedinAlameda,buttheyalsoretainedownershipofahomeinSantaCruz,wheretheyfrequentlyvisitedrelativesandspentsummers.

For forty-nineyearsafterA.P.’sdeath,Marywasactivewithherfamily,herhomeandotherproperties,theFirstCongregationalChurch,andmanycharitiesandcivicorganizations, includingtheKindergartenBoard,theWoman’sAidSociety,theRedCross,theSantaCruzImprovementAssociation,andtheDecorativeArtSoci-etyandWomen’sExchange.Maryregisteredtovotein1912,thefirstyearthatwomencouldvoteinCalifornia.Shelistedheroccupationas“Capitalist.” Mary(Perry)JordanFagendiedonOctober18,1915,attheageofseventy-eight,atherson’shomeinAlameda,afterattendingthePanamaPacificInternationalExposi-tioninSanFrancisco. Inherobituary, itwassaidthat“fewpeoplehaveeverresidedinaplacewhoselifehastouchedasmanyasthatofMrs.Fagen,awomanwhowasmostcharitableandwhoseonethoughtwasthatofhelpinganddoinggood.Shebelongstoaclassthatisfastvanishingofthosewhohavestoodforallthatwaspure,nobleandbestfromthepioneerdaysinCaliforniauntilnow.” Alsomentionedwas that“she lived formanyyearsatwhat isnowtheCowellhome,nearthekilns,andtheolderpeoplewillrememberthehospitalitythereandof themanygatheringsoutdoorsat thebeautifulgrovesontheplace”(Santa Cruz Surf,October18,1915;Santa Cruz Sentinel,October19,1915).
ManymembersofthePerry,Jordan,andCoxfamiliesareburiedinEvergreenCemetery,thepioneercemeteryonthehillsidenearHarveyWestPark. The lateMarionKathleen (Jordan)Asche—great-great-granddaughterofJohnandElizabethPerry,great-granddaughterofAlbionP.andMaryJordan,grand-daughterofPeterAlbionJordan,anddaughterofPeter’sson,AlbionP.Jordan—returnedtoliveinSantaCruzin1959,withherhusband,DouglasAsche,andtheirfivechildren.MariondiedonApril10,1991.Douglasdiedon
September4,2009,inSantaCruz,survivedbyfourofhisfivechildren,tengrandchildren,andeightgreat-grand-children.ThemostrecentdescendentofA.P.andMaryJordanisgreat-great-great-great-granddaughterJordanAsche,borninSantaCruzinJuly2009. ThoughAlbionandMaryJordanlivedintheranchhouseforlittlemorethanayear,andA.P.livedinSantaCruzonlytwelveyears,theirfamilyhistoryinSantaCruzhascontinuedthrougheightgenerations.WalkingupthepathoffHighStreettoCardiffHouse,pastthegnarledtrunksofoldtrees,someof themnearlyonehundredandfiftyyearsold—cypress,walnut,deodarcedar,blacklocust,elm,hawthorn—andarrivingatthequaint,yel-lowranchhouse,one is transportedback in timeandplacetothosefirstgenerationsofJordans,whobecameoneofthefoundersofthelimeindustryandprogenitorsofalonglineofSantaCruzcitizens.

The mission of the Friends of the Cowell Lime Works Historic District is to aid in the documenta-tion, restoration, preservation, and interpretation of the historic lime kilns and related structures and buildings of the Cowell Lime Works Historic District and other historic sites on the campus of the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Cabin Restoration Continues Workonrestoringoneof thehistoric limeworkercabinscontinuedoverthesummer.Thefoundationonthewestendwasexcavatedwiththehelpofarchaeolo-gists,andthesupportpostswereremoved,repairedandreinstalled. Assoonasarchaeologicalworkisfinishedontheinside,workwillbeginonreplacingorrepairingfloorjoists.Inthemeantime,repairsarebeingmadetothesiding, includingfixingcracksandreplacingwoodthathasrotted. Thegoal is to restore thecabin to itsappearancearound1910,thedateoftheoldestknownphotograph
