Many of our students have told us they would like to progress from the job-relevant founda-tion degrees or undergraduate degrees they have been studying. We are delighted so manywant to continue their learning journey with us. Therefore, we are pleased to be offeringfive new part-time degrees, whether you are looking for a fresh start or wish to continuewhere you left off.

We value professional and life experience when offering places to students embarking ontheir first degree. We do not ask for any particular qualifications. Many of the modules inour BA degrees are relevant to a wide range of employment sectors and are tailored toease you into study and provide you with new transferable skills.

Our fees remain in line with last years’ (to summer 2013). By enrolling this year, we guar-antee that your fees will remain at this level for the duration of your degree**. In addition,the University has generous bursaries available to help with fees for Lifelong Learning stu-dents. Go to the Fees and Funding pages for full details.

We fully understand the pressures of studying part-time whilst working and raising a fam-ily. Mae’r modiwlau yn adlewyrchuSafonau Galwedigaethol Cenedlaethol y maes acyn eich galluogi i ddatblygu eich rhwydweithiaudysgu a phroffesiynol ac i fod yn gysylltiedig âphartneriaeth gyffrous o bobl a sefydliadau sy’nymwneud â’r maes. Adfyfyrio beirniadol acymarfer yn seiliedig ar ymchwil sydd wrthwraidd y strategaeth ddysgu a bydd eichtiwtoriaid yn gymysgedd o rhai academaidd acymarferwyr, pob un yn cymryd rhan lawn yn ymaes. Bydd myfyrwyr yn cyflawni astudiaethaumaes yng Nghymru yn ogystal â gweddill Prydainac Ewrop.

BA Dyniaethau

Bydd y cwrs Dyniaethau newydd hwn yn golygubod myfyrwyr yn astudio tri phrif faes pwnc yn yDyniaethau mewn ffordd integredig acamlddisgyblaethol sef Llenyddiaeth Saesneg,Hanes ac Athroniaeth. Byddwch yn gwneud hyndrwy gyfuno modiwlau thematig,rhyngddisgyblaethol a phenodol i bwnc. Un oegwyddorion canolog y rhaglen yw bodastudiaeth systematig o’r dyniaethau yn rhoihyfforddiant ardderchog ar gyfer datblygu sgiliautrosglwyddadwy megis meddwl yn greadigol achyfathrebu – sy’n werthfawr ar gyfer datblygiadpersonol a chyflogadwyedd.

Bydd gan fyfyrwyr hefyd gyfle unigryw ymMlwyddyn 2 i ddewis gwneud cwrs Hanes neuSaesneg llawn amser yn y Brifysgol osdymunir.

BA AstudiaethauSeicogymdeithasol mewn Defnyddio Sylweddau

Amcan y rhaglen radd arloesol hon yw darparuprofiad addysgol o’r ansawdd orau sy’n cynnigtrosolwg cynhwysfawr ar faes camddefnyddiosylweddau o safbwynt bioseicogymdeithasol.Bydd yn parhau i adeiladu ar bartneriaeth sy’nbodoli eisoes rhwng CAIS – sefydliad blaenllawym maes Alcohol a Chyffuriau yng Nghymru gansicrhau bod cyflogwyr yn ymwneud yn agos â’rcwrs ac yn cydweithio i helpu i wella datblygu’rgweithlu yn y maes hwn.

Mae’r rhaglen wedi ei seilio ar wybodaeth o’rSafonau Galwedigaethol Cenedlaethol arGyffuriau ac Alcohol (DANOS), fel bod myfyrwyryn cael y sgiliau a’r wybodaeth sydd eu hangen igyflwyno a dehongli tystiolaeth yn unol â SafonauGalwedigaethol y Sector.

BA Community Development

The flexible programme in CommunityDevelopment is designed to increase yourunderstanding of community development andenhance your critical practice. The modulesreflect the recently agreed National OccupationalStandards and enable you to develop yourprofessional and learning networks and beconnected to an exciting partnership of peopleand organisations active in the field. Criticalreflection and research based practice will be atthe heart of the learning strategy and yourtutors will be a mix of academic and practitionertutors all fully engaged in the field. Students willregularly undertake study visits in Wales as wellas across the rest of the UK and Europe.

BA Humanities

This new Humanities degree programmeprovides students with the opportunity to studythree main subjects areas – English Literature,History and Philosophy. It will do this through acombination of themed, interdisciplinary andsubject specific modules. The study of thehumanities provides excellent training for thedevelopment of transferable skills such ascritical thinking and communication which arevaluable both for personal development andemployability.

Students will also have a unique opportunity inYear 2 to opt into a full time History or Englishcourse at the University if desired.

BA Psychosocial Studiesin Substance Use

This innovative degree programme aims toprovide students with the highest qualityeducational experience alongside acomprehensive overview of the substancemisuse field from a biopsychosocial perspective.We continue to build on the existing partnershipwith CAIS – a leading Drug and AlcoholCounselling Organisation in Wales – providingclose employer participation and involvementand working collaboratively to help improveemployability in this area.

The programme is mapped to the relevant Drugand Alcohol National Occupational Standards(DANOS) so that students are equipped with theskills and knowledge required to present andinterpret evidence of the Sector’s OccupationalStandards.

Mae’r rhaglen lwyddiannus hon wedi ei chynllunioar gyfer y rhai sydd yn neu’n cynllunio gweithioyn y sectorau cymunedol, cyhoeddus a gwirfoddoli ddatblygu a gwella eu dealltwriaeth o’r theorïau,prosesau ac ymarfer datblygu cymunedol.

Mae adfyfyrio beirniadol ac ymchwil seiliedig arymarfer wrth wraidd y gweithgareddau dysgu.Mae’r cynnwys yn adlewyrchu’r SafonauGalwedigaethol Cenedlaethol ac yn cael eiddarparu gan diwtoriaid academaidd acymarferwyr ac yn cynnwys cyfres o seminaraugwadd gan fodau allweddol y maes.

MA AstudiaethauMenywod

Mae Astudiaethau Menywod yn bwnc digonunigryw sy’n herio strwythurau traddodiadol owybodaeth ynglŷn â gender, a hefyd y ffyrddarferol y byddwn yn dysgu. Mae ganddo enw dadros fod yn ysgogol, yn ddeallusol ac ynberthnasol – yn ymarferol, yn ogystal â bod ynhygyrch i fenywod o bob cefndir a diddordebauamrywiol.

Mae’n tynnu ar lawer o ddisgyblaethau yncynnwys cymdeithaseg, llenyddiaeth, hanes,seicoleg a gwleidyddiaeth. Mae’n cydnabodgwerth profiadau byw merched ac yn annogadfyfyrio ar y rhain mewn perthynas â syniadaudamcaniaethol sy’n croesi ffiniau disgyblaethol.

Mae’n galluogi menywod i wneud synnwyr o’ubywydau/bywyd ac i chwilio am atebion i’rrhwystrau sy’n eu hwynebu.

MA Celfyddyd GainNEWYDD

Mae’r MA Celfyddyd Gain yn adeiladu ar y rhaglenisraddedig lwyddiannus sydd ar gael eisoes, ganalluogi i chi symud ymlaen i lefel uwch drwyastudio modiwlau’n rhan-amser.

Bwriad y rhaglen yw eich galluogi i astudio drosgyfnod sylweddol a’ch helpu i adolygu, newid,datblygu a chryfhau eich safle fel arlunydd gydagymarfer adfyfyriol wedi’i seilio ar ymchwil fel ystrategaeth ddysgu ganolog.

Cefnogir eich ymchwil gan gyfarwyddydgoruchwyliol, tiwtorialau, mentora, seminarau,darlithoedd gwadd, astudiaethau achos a dysgugyda grŵp o gyfoedion. Bydd hyn i gyd yn rhoiamgylchedd beirniadol i’ch paratoi at ymarferproffesiynol pellach yn y diwydiannau creadigol.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES 2013

MA (PG Cert/Dip) Community Development

This highly successful programme is designed forthose working/planning to work in thecommunity, public and voluntary sectors todevelop and enhance their understanding of thetheories, processes and practice of communitydevelopment.

The programme has critical reflection andpractice based research at its core. It reflects theNational Occupational Standards and is deliveredby academic and practitioner tutors, including aseries of seminars by key figures in the field ofcommunity development.

Study visits to Ireland, Mallorca and Portugal, aswell as all parts of Wales, form a vital element ofthe learning and network building process.

MA Women’s Studies

Women’s Studies is in many ways a uniquesubject which challenges traditional structuresof knowledge about gender and about the usualways in which we learn. It has a reputation forbeing both intellectually stimulating andpractically relevant, as well as being accessibleto women from varying backgrounds andinterests.

It draws on many disciplines including sociology,literature, history, psychology and politics. Itrecognises the value of women’s livedexperiences and encourages reflection on thesein relation to theoretical insights that crossdiscipline boundaries.

It enables women to make sense of theirlives/life and to seek solutions to the barriersthey face.

MA Fine Art NEW

The MA Fine Art degree builds on the successfulexisting undergraduate programme enabling youto progress to an advanced level throughmodular part-time study.

The programme is designed to enable you toengage in a substantial period of study to helpyou review, change, develop and strengthen yourposition as an artist with reflective practicebased research as the central strategy oflearning.

Your research will be supported by supervisoryguidance, tutorials, mentoring, seminars, visitinglectures, case studies and peer group learning,all combining to create a critical environment inpreparing you for further professional practicein the creative industries.

Bydd myfyriwr ar gwrs gradd rhan-amser yn gwneudyr un faint o waith astudio â myfyriwr llawn-amser,ond dros gyfnod hwy o amser. Ceir tair lefel oastudiaeth, a phob un ohonynt yn werth 120 ogredydau ac yn cyfateb i astudiaeth ar flwyddyn 1,blwyddyn 2 neu flwyddyn 3 lefel gradd. Ar bobcyfnod, gall myfyrwyr ymadael gyda chymwysterauAddysg Uwch. Mwy o wybodaeth ar dudalen 46.

Mae gan raddau rhan-amser strwythur fodiwlaiddsy’n eich galluogi i weithio ar eich cyflymdra eichhunain. Mae’r modiwlau fel arfer yn 10 neu 20 credyda byddwch fel arfer yn dilyn hyd at dri modiwl 10credyd bob semester. Mae'r rhan fwyaf o fyfyrwyr yncwblhau gradd mewn 5 mlynedd.

First Degrees

A student on a part-time degree will do the sameamount of studying as a full time student, but spreadover a longer period of time. There are three levels ofstudy, each worth 120 credits and equivalent to first,second or third year study at degree level. At eachstage students may exit with Higher Educationqualifications. Futher details on page 47.

Part-time degrees have a modular structure, whichmeans that you can work at your own pace. Modulesare usually 10 or 20 credits and, generally, up tothree 10 credit modules are studied over onesemester. Most students can expect to complete adegree in 5 years.

You do not need any particular qualifications.Professional experience and skills developed at workor in the home will be taken into account whendeciding whether to offer you a place. In general wewould expect to offer a place to anyone whom we feelwould benefit from studying a degree.

This year the fees remain in line with last year’s. Byenrolling this year, we guarantee that your fees willremain at the same level for the duration of the coursebut fees may rise in line with inflation.

Postgraduate Courses

We have a range of postgraduate courses, aimed bothat working people looking for career development andthose wishing to study a subject at a more advancedlevel. Applicants must have either an initial degree, arecognised equivalent qualification or be over 25 yearsof age with at least two years relevant experience. Community Development –undergraduate activitiesFor people actively involved in theircommunities and active communities…Each year we begin a ‘learning for communitydevelopment’ programme in differentcommunities. Recently these have includedRhyl, Llandudno, Talacre and Gronant.

These courses are run in communities and forcommunities. The content reflects both theneeds of communities as well as currentNational Occupational Standards. Thequalifications range from Lifelong LearningCertificates, Higher Education Certificates &Diplomas up to a full Foundation Degreeand/or BA honours degree.

The courses include class work, practicalwork, research and study visits (day visits andresidential). Assessments aim at being usefulin the community as well as fulfilling academicrequirements and include communityresearch, community planning, communityenterprise, developing community strategies,community learning plans, understanding thepolitics of communities.

You must commit to generating written work indifferent styles, including presentations,reports, essays and individual as well as groupwork.

All we need are individuals, groups andcommunities determined to make a differenceand we can deliver in your area. Communitieswith imagination and determination are invitedto contact the programme director for furtherdiscussion.

This module aims to promote a betterunderstanding and awareness of the issueswith drug- and/or alcohol-related mentalhealth problems often termed as DualDiagnosis. It will consider the issues related tothe services of this particularly vulnerableclient group. These clients often experiencemore serious problems and have a poorer

This module will help students gain insightand understanding into self-harming andsuicidal behaviour. It will consider some of thecultural and historical features involved anddiscuss a range of biopsychosocial andtherapeutic approaches concerned withsuicide and self harm understanding andmanagement. Client needs and riskmanagement will be evaluated to help identifyand minimize risk in relation to self-harm andsuicide. The course will also discuss theconcept of vicarious traumatisation – acumulative transformative effect which may beexperienced by those working directly orindirectly with survivors of trauma. Studentswill be made aware of the relevant NationalInstitute for Health and Clinical Excellence(NICE) guidelines and Mental Health Act inorder to develop their understanding and carepractice.

The significance of the Enlightenment as anintellectual and cultural movement in 18thCentury Europe and North America and its rolein the formation of the modern world areimmense. Topics covered include the idea of theindividual self, the debate between rationalismand empiricism, the development of liberalpolitical theory, the advance of the naturalsciences and the growth of secularism. Theworks of Rene Descartes and John Locke arediscussed as the starting points for thesedebates and the ideas are traced in the work ofwriters such as Kant, Voltaire and Jefferson.Criticisms of the Enlightenment emphases onreason and individual liberty are also discussed,focussing on the work of Rousseau.

Which level?Beginners: You are a complete beginner,knowing virtually nothing of the language. Youwill develop competence in a range ofpredictable simple everyday language tasks.The course will provide a very basicknowledge of the structure and vocabulary ofthe language.

Beginners Plus: You may have studied thelanguage at school some years ago orattended a beginners’ course. You have a verylimited vocabulary and some understanding ofbasic structures. The course will introducenew tenses and help you to communicate ineveryday social or work situations.

Intermediate Plus: You have a reasonablefoundation in the language at school level,possibly to ‘O’/GCSE level or equivalent. Youcan deal with most common ‘survival’situations confidently. You now want to startmoving beyond merely practising simpleexchanges during your holiday abroad,learning to cope in non-routine situations.

Advanced Plus: You have acquired a goodvocabulary and a good understanding ofgrammatical rules. Your speaking and listeningskills allow you to be relatively confident inmost social or working settings. You canunderstand a wide range of demanding andlong texts and produce clear and wellstructured texts. University Concert SeriesThe long-established Music at Bangor concert series isone of the most extensive cultural programmespresented by any British university. The series bringsaround thirty concerts to Bangor during the academicyear: a diverse mix ranging from chamber ensemblesto the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The Universityis also proud to play host to four resident ensembles,the Allegri String Quartet, the Orlando Consort,Benyounes Quartet and Ensemble Cymru, as well as anumber of student-based groups including theUniversity Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Choir, andEarly Music Bangor.

Tickets for most concerts are available for purchaseon-line at our Box Office and can also be purchased onthe door on the evening of the concert.

How Our Qualifications Work

Lifelong Learning CertificatesThe Lifelong Learning Certificate is for thoseachieving 60 Higher Education credits at level 4.A list of possible certificates can be found on ourwebsite and a certificate will be awarded forachieving at least 40 credits in a specific subjectarea together with 20 credits in a related area.On completion of this certificate, we encourageyou to proceed to the full HE Certificate thatequates to the first year of a degree course.

Higher Education (HE) CertificatesA module can be studied on its own, or you maydecide to continue your studies and move on tocomplete a Higher Education Certificate. It ispossible to choose your own programme ofstudies to achieve a Certificate in Open Studiesor you may prefer to study towards a namedCertificate, for example a Certificate in Fine Art,Certificate in Personal & Professional Skills or aCertificate in Community Development. Certifi-cates are made up of 120 credits at Level 4,which is equivalent to the first year of a full timeUniversity degree.

Named certificates are made up of core and op-tional modules. No prior qualifications areneeded to register for a certificate apart fromthe Certificate in Fine Art for which there arecertain pre-requisites. All part-time students areallowed to register for a maximum of 90 creditsin one academic year and can gain a certificatein three semesters (about 18 months).

You can also build up your credits gradually andtake up to five years to achieve a named Certifi-cate. It may be worth bearing in mind that thereare a number of new means tested schemes forpart-time students who are considering studyingfor at least 60 credits in one academic year. (Seepage 41).

Higher Education Diplomas & DegreesOnce you've completed a HE Certificate you maydecide to continue your studies at a higher level.Diploma courses are at Level 5 (equivalent to thesecond year of a full time degree). Students willnormally have successfully completed a certifi-cate before embarking on a Diploma. As with thenamed Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees havea set structure, with core modules that you mustcomplete and optional modules which you canchoose from. Part-time Student Discretionary Bursary

You may be eligible to apply for a contribution towardsyour course fees. They are not usually available tothose undertaking postgraduate courses, butpostgraduates can apply. Personal circumstances andwhether or not you are in receipt of other sources offunding will be taken into account when allocating thebursaries. If eligible, you could be allocated a bursarywhich may be worth up to 75% of your course fees.

HEFCW Fee Waiver Scheme*:

If you are on benefits such as:• Job Seekers allowance• Income Support• Housing Benefit• Council Tax Benefit and/or • Working Tax Benefit • Pension Credits• Carer’s Allowance

and do not already have a degree, you can applydirectly to the University for a HEFCW fee waiver if youare studying on an accredited course or module.

This scheme can only fund up to 40 credits peracademic year.

Local Authority Grants

If you are intending to complete a Higher Education Cer-tificate, Diploma or Honours Degree and are committedto studying a minimum of 60 and a maximum of 90credits in one academic year (Sept-July) you could be el-igible for financial help towards your fees and othercosts related to your course.

How much you may get depends on your personal cir-cumstances and the type of course you wish to study:

• fee grants (to pay in full or to help with tuitionfees - normally up to £1000),

• course grant (to help with study costs such asbooks, course materials and travel) of up to£1125 depending on your financial circumstances.

You do not have to repay this help. Students who alreadyhave a degree cannot normally apply for this support.There is no age limit. You are advised to check with yourLocal Education Authority* for further information.

University Hardship Fund

The Hardship Fund provides financial help to studentswho face difficulty in meeting their living costs forwhatever reason, whether it is due to their personal cir-cumstances (e.g. disabled students), or because theyfall into hardship unexpectedly. To be eligible for the Hardship Fund a student must beregistered on a part-time course equivalent to 50% ormore of a full time course at either undergraduate orpostgraduate level.
