What students have said about LLC courses

Kudos for the super selection offered. Instructors were knowledgeable and helpful. I thrive in retirement because of the LLC. After using a computer for 18 years, I’m finally learning the things I never knew but needed.

I have much more to learn!

Tell Us Your Story … by Bob Juby Just as we need air to breath, water to drink and bread to eat, we need to tell our stories. Every day we tell our stories. We tell them over the kitchen table and over the backyard fence. I am a senior and a storyteller. I like to put my stories on paper and tell them to others. I like to listen to the stories that others tell. By listening, I can learn to tell my stories better. The Lifelong Learning Centre provides the supportive environment for storytelling. I can tell my stories and, in return, I can hear some fascinating stories told by others. Through our stories, we get to know each other better and form a caring community. Truman Capote was once asked if creative writing could be taught. Capote thought for a moment and commented that he did not think you could teach someone to be creative but you could provide them with a captive audience. At the Lifelong Learning Centre, the exits are clearly marked. However, in the years that I have been part of the creative writing group, I have never witnessed an exodus when a story needed to be told.

SINGAPORE REVISITED (75409)

Singapore - a modern and prosperous multicultural city-state in South-East Asia - celebrates fifty years of independence, in 2015, from British colonial rule. To mark this occasion, Angeline Chia shares her impressions of once familiar places she revisited, and other places she discovered, during three trips to her country of origin between 2002 and 2013. Using a selection of still and moving images, Angeline describes some dramatic changes she observed in Singapore’s historical and cultural landscape. Presenter: Angeline Chia Day: Apr 30 THE NEW ‘FARMERS’: FINANCIAL INVESTMENT IN CANADIAN AND AUSTRALIAN FARMLAND (75410) In the last 10 years, investors of various kinds have purchased millions of acres of farmland around the world. Join Ron Bocking and enjoy the humorous stand-up routines of this Hollywood legend. Presenter: Ron Bocking Day: May 21 THE IMPACT OF THE GREAT WAR ON COMICS (75413) In 1914 Europe, single frame political cartoons were ideal vehicles to serve war propaganda. On the other hand, multi-frame comics at that time were all geared toward children and were little influenced by the Great War - but over half a century later some graphic novels would finally be set in the First World War. This presentation will illustrate how the Great War, as a background, impacts present day graphic novel ideology and graphic representation. Presenter: Dr. Sylvian Rheault Day: May 28 PROGRESS INTERRUPTED: WORLD WAR 1 AND THE DECLINE OF WAR (75414) This talk will challenge the idea that World War 1 was a normal, if tragic, recurrence of great power conflict as well as the idea that it inaugurated history’s bloodiest century with total war, totalitarianism, genocide and unprecedented violence. Instead, I will argue that World War I was a detour on the long road of declining warfare. Progress in the decline of war was bloodily interrupted but has since resumed so that we have entered an era with less war than ever. Presenter: Dr. Martin Hewson Day: Jun 4 JOURNEY TO ICELAND AND NORWAY: A TRIP FOR THOSE WHO LOVE SCIENCE (75415) Join Stephen Cheng as he shares pictures of his 2013 trip to Iceland and Norway.
