They do it because they care and to make a difference. So this month, we are proud to feature one of those special people that often helped our children through a difficult day at school. Please get to know one of our teacher treasures, Christine John-son and her daughter, Avery. When out and about, be sure to thank our teachers for what they do.

Take care out there, and let’s look out for each other.

I’ll be seeing you…Around the Circle,Dave BrownPublisher/[email protected]

publisher’s note

While March can sometimes offer up a couple last gasps of win-ter, mostly we can begin looking forward to the Spring rebirth and return of our beautiful Circle C greenery. “Wow, that was a relatively short winter…,” I seem to always say.

Speaking of “rebirth,” be sure to check out what our neighbor Patience Aylstock has to say about the reboot of the legend-ary Circle C Mom’s Club. It is back, better than ever, to help moms all over the hood get connected, get involved, give back to the community; and, rumor has it, wine could sometimes be involved. We’re glad to help spread the word about this – just another thing that makes Circle C such a special place.

And speaking of “special,” as a Circle C resident I’ve always felt we are blessed to have the public schools we have right in our neighborhood. As my daughter grew through Kiker and on to Goryziki Gorwazicki Gorrzzz (dang it) Gorzycki, I saw firsthand the care, commitment and dedication the teachers and staff shower upon our kids. We all know they don’t do it for money.

LILY AND ROSCOE

By Circle C Resident Amy Latham

My Story: by Lily GonzalesI found my adop-tive parents at the Sunset Valley Farmer’s Market almost nine years ago, when I was just six weeks old. Amy fell in love with me the moment she held me and I licked her cheek with my sweet puppy breath. Then Der-rick held me and

I snuggled right up to him, and knew I had him wrapped around my finger. Before I knew it, we were on our way

to my new home. There I got to meet my new brothers, Chris and Lance, and my

granny. Lance had some remote control cars. They were my most favorite things in the world

to chase—forget balls or Frisbees. I also loved that my new family let me sleep in bed with them. Even to this day, nine years later, I still snuggle at my mom’s feet or lie next to her on her pillow until she falls asleep. There were some things I had to work on, though, like eating everyone’s shoes, tearing up furniture, and getting into the trash can. Luckily, shoes and chairs don’t taste that good anymore, but I still love getting into the trash.

Mom and Dad adopted a new brother a couple of years ago. His name is Roscoe. Honestly, I wasn’t too sure about him at first, but now I don’t know what I’d do without him. Sometimes I even blame the toilet paper eating on him—isn’t that what big sisters do? He loves to cuddle with me, and we are never bored together. My most favorite person in the house and my best friend is my mom. Every day, we have what she calls puppy therapy. That’s when she gets on the floor and we act silly together. That’s my favorite time of day. Also, if you hear me barking from my window, just know I am trying to protect my mom and keep her safe. I also listen to her when she needs to talk, and she listens to me too. I am not as fast as I was nine years ago, but I still love to rough house with Mom and Dad and my brothers. I still love chasing squirrels, belly rubs, and treats, and I LOVE taking walks around the Circle and meeting new friends

Hi, everyone! Our names are

Lily and Roscoe. We moved to Circle C with our adoptive

parents in May 2017, and we

LOVE the Circle.

(although sometimes I can be a little intimidating). I am so thankful that my mom and dad found me and that I found them.

My Story: by Roscoe GonzalesMy story starts a little sad but has the happiest ending ever. My adoptive par-ents’ best friends found me in Garfield, TX. I was lost, scared, and sick, and I just needed a warm bed and a meal. I was lucky to find the Hay family, who provided for me. Then one day, the Hays family told Amy and Derrick about a dog they found on their street. Amy couldn’t wait to meet me (she LOVES dogs). When she walked in, I turned on the charm, batted my sweet eyes, and ran right to her lap. I jumped up and gave her some kisses, and she looked at her friend and said, “I have to have him.” Then it was Derrick’s turn to hold me. I looked at him with my floppy ears (I

mean, who can resist that?) and Derrick was in love. I waited two weeks to be legally adopted, and then I went with Amy and Derrick to my new home. There I met my brothers, my granny, and my new big sister, Lily, and let me tell you, she was BIG. She wasn’t sure about me at first. She growled and looked at me funny, but I turned on the Roscoe charm, and we have been best buds ever since.eet

GONZALES!

Once I got settled in, my new mom took me to the doctor, who discovered I had heartworms. I spent the next two months going to the doctor for treatment. I felt terrible, but my new family took such good care of me. Mom spent many days holding me wrapped up in a blanket, trying to ease my pain. My dad and brothers would lie with me and just rub my back until I went to sleep. The worst part was that I couldn’t play with my new sister or brothers, no running outside or anything. Mom kept saying it wouldn’t last forever, but boy did it feel like forever. Now, I am three years old, and I just celebrated my two-year adoption day in December. My favorites things to do are snuggling up with my people, chasing squirrels with Lily, and spending time with my brothers and granny. I have made a few new friends in the Circle, and I love go-ing on walks. Mom and Dad say I need to work on a few things, like chewing up shoes and unrolling the toilet paper. I am trying, but shoes and toilet paper just taste so good. I try to remind them that I’m still a puppy and one day maybe I won’t do that ... but I think I will. (Shhh, don’t tell them I said that.) Plus, I know my granny will stick up for me. After all, she is my best friend.

How's the view from down there?

Hogging the bed again?!

The Circle C Mom’s Club is back! The longtime mom’s club in Circle C just got a facelift and new leadership. We are thrilled to continue helping this club flourish in our great community. Circle C has a lot of newcomers looking to connect and many sea-soned residents with so much to share. Our goal is to help mamas “find their tribe.” Available to moms living within the Circle C boundaries and Meridian, the Circle C Mom’s Club offers a myriad of ways for moms to connect through events like Moms’ Nights Out/In, Recipe Club, special events, playdates, Book Club, Bunco, poker nights, wellness activities, meal trains, and so much more. This club is for moms of all ages, from expecting to empty nesters.

We’ve received a lot of positive feedback about our recent events, and moms are excited about the growth and future of the Circle C Mom’s Club. Last Christmas, we hosted a Pinterest Home-made Christmas gift party. We’ve had numerous playdates in parks, aquariums, and other fun kid-friendly places around our great city. We recently held our successful relaunch party at

event at their home, lead a coffee or lunch meetup, host a special interest group, or help with group events.

The Circle C Mom’s Club posts a monthly and week-by-week calendar with reminders all linked with Face-book events. There is an annual dues of $24 associated with this club, which goes toward helping pay for events and group costs. Find us on our Facebook page, Circle C Moms Club Official Page and ... come play! We have so many exciting things happening!

Hill Country Tasting Room. We had many amazing sponsors and vendors from our community help with our door prizes.

From our surveys, we are finding that moms mainly want a stress-free night in with some food, good conversation, and wine. We’ve added some fun themes and activities to mix it up. There is a wonderful ser-vice aspect to the club as well, from meal trains to serving local commu-nity needs. In December, we went caroling at Beckett Meadows and handed out homemade gifts, candy canes, and flowers. We have so many great ideas to grow and create events to better serve our club and the needs of our mamas. We always wel-come volunteers willing to host an

ONE OF OUR TEACHER TREASURES IN CIRCLE C!My name is Christine Johnson, but most people know me as Mrs. John-son, especially the kids in Circle C. That’s because I have been working at Kiker Elementary for 13 years. With a BA in fine arts, I’m not even sure how I got into special education. I suppose it all started when I couldn’t find a job in graphics, so I started working in daycare. I loved the two-year-olds. They were so silly. When my own daughter came along, I stayed at home with her until I got antsy. (I’m a very busy person by nature.) So, I decided I’d try subbing at Kiker. It seemed like all the subbing jobs were in special ed-ucation. There was a real need there, and not many subs were jumping on those jobs. Once I started subbing in special education, I realized that was what I wanted to do. It’s been very rewarding work. It’s the greatest feel-ing working with these kids, seeing

them blossom, and knowing that I had something to do with it.

I’m originally from Salem, Massa-chusetts, and I lived in Fort Worth and Iowa before landing in Austin. I’ve lived in Texas longer than I lived in MA, but I still call myself a Yan-kee! And I still love the cold winters. (People here think I’m crazy because I don’t use the heater during the win-ters.) We moved to Wildflower Park in 2001, when the back end was still under construction. We picked out our lot and built, and I absolutely love it here. Circle C is big, but it’s very tight-knit, and everyone has an open door. My daughter, Avery, has grown up here, enjoying all the community activities. The people are so great here, and we always feel connected.

Avery is very artistic. She went to Kiker, Gorzycki Middle School, and

then McCallum Fine Arts Academy for high school. She’s won many awards for her artwork over the years, but the most exciting award was the Golden Key, which she accepted at Carnegie Hall in NYC! The artwork that earned her that award is still traveling the country. It’s a vase with the word “speak” spelled out in sign language, along with a message in braille. Now a freshman at UT, Avery studies communications/advertising. She wants to add speech pathology to her curriculum because she wants to work within the deaf community. She studied sign language for three years, and that’s what she really wants to do.

Avery lives in the UT dorms now, but still comes back home to Circle C often to hang out and visit with me and our two cats, Betsy and Marly. It’s convenient for Avery because she works at a neighborhood church and at the Oak Hill Y. Some-times she’ll call ahead and request her favorite meal—potato chip chicken! After my 10-hour days at Kiker, I enjoy relaxing with Avery. I also enjoy crafting, hiking at Barton Creek or Mount Bonnell, and taking weekend trips to the Hill Country or to Fort Worth to see my folks. Sometimes I venture off to Colorado or back to Iowa to see my sister.

Recently, I acquired my special education teaching certificate. It was a real push. I’d go to work, come home, study my online courses until 10:00 or 11:00 at night, go to sleep, and then do it all over again the next day, and the next. I basically just lived and breathed school. I did the certificate program through Texas Teachers of Tomorrow. The program is self-paced, and they give you a year to complete it. I completed mine in about four months! As I’ve said, I don’t really like too much downtime. Anyway, AISD is hiring special education teachers right now,

The section between Dick Nichols and Davis Lane still has a 1/4 mile gap that is getting formed for a concrete pour. After that is done, this section will be pretty much complete.

The section between Slaughter Lane and Slaughter Creek is almost completely “paved” with the crushed granite. Metal rail-ings are being built on the sloped segments for ADA compliance. The bridges across the creek seem to have survived well despite high water that left a lot of debris on top of and under the north bridge. It appears they are waiting until the creek dries up com-pletely before resuming work on the north bridge.

The first six miles of this trail system, from Zilker Park to Brodie Lane at Highway 290, officially opened to the public in August 2015.

The second segment of trail, stretching from Highway 290 to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the Veloway broke ground in 2017 and is expected to be opened to the public in 2019. The final segment of trail will connect the Lady Bird Johnson Wild-flower Center to the Onion Creek Management Unit, one of the most beautiful tracts of Water Quality Protection Lands in the area.

When completed, the Violet Crown Trail will connect downtown Austin with the Veloway, the Wildflower Center, and thousands of acres of preserved land to the south.

but those positions are at different schools. I’m holding out for a position at Kiker for next year. I have a special connection with the kids there, and the staff is like family to me.

I love bumping into the school kids in my own neighborhood. There’s just something about them. They are fun, they’re full of life, and they’re silly and innocent about so many things. It’s neat to see them outside of school, too, because they are different. They’re not having to walk in lines or sit quietly at the lunch table. They are just having fun. It’s great that we have the park in the center of the neighborhood. When I go up there to check my mail, there will always be two or three kiddos who come running over to give me a big old hug! That’s one of my favorite things about living in Circle C.

THE MARCUS A. JONES AGENCYEXPERTISE AND SERVICE FOR YOUR FAMILY’S PROTECTION!By Marcus A. Jones

Although I am a native-born Texan, I went to high school and college in the Baltimore, MD, area (Towson University with a BA in mass communications), and I’ve had the privilege of living in such places as Vancouver, BC, and the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I met my wife, Cristie, in Ft. Worth in 2003. We got married at the TCU (her alma mater) chapel and had our wedding reception at the Ft. Worth Zoo. Shortly after getting married 12 years ago, we moved to Austin so Cristie could be close to her family in her hometown of Dripping Springs. We have two children: Addie

(age 9) is currently in third grade, and Brody (age 6) is currently in first grade, both at Boone Elementary School.

I got into insurance while working in the auto finance industry in Dallas. I found insurance a lot more interesting than collec-tions. When my wife and I moved to Austin in 2007, I got a job with Farmers® as a personal lines (auto and home) underwriter. The office I worked at was located in far North Austin. I thor-oughly enjoyed what I did, but dealing with Mopac traffic twice a day for several years got very old.

In May 2014, I got the opportunity to transition from underwrit-ing to an agent for Farmers®. I quickly got my insurance and se-curities licenses. I balanced both positions for a year until I left the service center in May 2015 to focus on my new agency. I was completely shocked at the difference between being an employee and being self-employed. This has been the toughest challenge I’ve taken on in my lifetime. I am enjoying the flexibility of being my own boss and helping out more with family duties.

Due to my underwriting background, I have extensive knowl-edge of our product. My first priority is to explain what coverag-es you currently have, and then to inform you on what coverages you should have. I then go into detail on what said coverages can do for you. There are certain people out there who tend to buy insurance on price alone. Keep in mind that insurance should be purchased on value. It’s similar to shopping at a grocery store compared to Costco. Sure, you’ll pay less at the grocery store, but you’ll get better value at Costco. An awesome agent, along with cost, is what determines good value in insurance.

As my family grows, I understand more and more how import-ant insurance truly is, not only for peace of mind, but for per-sonal growth and well-being. Family is very important to me and I consider my clients part of my family. I want to protect them and their families as if they were my own. Insurance provides another layer of protection that is unsurpassable in many un-thinkable situations. It is something that you don’t want to have to worry about if something awful happens. I want my clients to have that protection already in place and not have to think about that aspect of it during such a difficult time.

CIRCLE C

A ’90s CIRCLE C HOME GETS A MODERN UPGRADE THROUGHOUT, INCLUDING ADDITION OF A 750-SQUARE-FOOT CASITA

5701 BEXLEY COURT By Circle C Resident Tara McGuire

In 2015, real estate agent Tara Mc-Guire received a phone call about a listing for a 2,200 sq. ft. home, built in 1999 just down the street from her current home. Upon touring the home, she was taken with the large backyard that faced a greenbelt and the potential it had as an outdoor living space. “The house itself was nothing special in its current state,” she says. Tara and her husband Craig Mc-Guire, a construction contractor with Liberty Construction, decid-ed to buy it. They came up with a

renovation plan, including building a smaller detached unit they call their “casita” that would serve as a home office for Tara and guesthouse.

The home had original late ’90s oak cabinets, black floor tile and laminate countertops. All the walls shown were removed to create a large open kitchen and family room. Remov-ing a wall helped open up the space between the kitchen, dining room and family room. Laminated veneer lumber beams were stained by hand and added as ceiling support where the walls were removed.

The McGuires did most of the renovation work themselves. Tara designed the kitchen and Craig engineered the perfect pitch of the new ceiling.

“We love the open living space,” says Tara. “The bedrooms are all small, but we feel it pulls the kids from their rooms to engage with us in the family room.”

The backyard makeover took a year in planning and seven months to complete, with the casita taking four months to build. “In the end, the space is perfect for our family. I have an amaz-ing workspace and the kids have a great space to play video games, watch TV and my favorite: We now have the house where the kids want to hang out with friends,” Tara says.

Irish Soda Bread

Recipe by Resident Elizabeth Flowers, The Kitchen Elf

INGREDIENTS2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting2 cups whole wheat flour1 teaspoon salt2 teaspoon baking soda2 teaspoon cream of tartar4 tablespoon butter1 cup raisins2 teaspoon sugar1/4 cup Turbinado sugar (optional)1-1/2 to 1-2/3 cup buttermilk

INSTRUCTIONS• Preheat oven to 375. Lightly grease a baking sheet or line with parchment.

If using a Dutch oven or cloche, leave in oven as it preheats.• Sift the flours and salt into a large bowl.• Add the baking soda and cream of tartar, then rub in the butter. Stir in sug-

ar and add raisins.• Pour in enough buttermilk to form a soft dough, be careful not to over mix.• Turn onto lightly floured surface, knead a couple of times, and use the bot-

tom curve of your hand to form a ball.• Very lightly moisten the top of the dough with water and roll in Turbinado

sugar (This step is optional, but I love the light and sweet crunch it adds to the finished bread).

• Using a baker’s scoring blade or a serrated sharp knife, make a cross mark, about three-quarter inches deep, across the top of the boule.

• Place on prepared baking sheet or set in hot cloche/Dutch oven and cover. Bake for 45–55 min, until bread is well risen and sounds hollow when thumped on bottom. (If you have a cooking thermometer, it should register 190 degrees for this milk-enriched dough.)

• Serve warm and enjoy! If you happen to wind up with leftovers, it makes amazing French toast as well!

Irish soda bread is a traditional Irish bread baked in droves during the days and weeks leading up to Saint Patrick’s Day! Unlike traditional yeast breads, Irish soda bread uses bicarbonate as its leavening agent. Developed during the time of Ireland’s financial strife in the 1830s, it made use of the most basic and inexpensive ingredients available: “soft” wheat flour, baking soda, salt, and soured milk. I add a bit of sugar to my recipe as well as raisins to give it a little “umf,” which is commonly done in our Americanized version. All you need is a lightly greased baking sheet to make this quick and easy soda bread, but I prefer to use my bread cloche or Dutch oven, totally optional. Excellent served fresh from the oven with a little butter and shared with friends!

BE CREATIVE

resident business spotlightBy Circle C

Resident Dara Chambers

Dr. George Land was hired by NASA to design a test of creativity. The test worked so well that he decided to give it to 1,600 children between the ages of three and five. The re-sults of that study showed that 98%

of five-year-olds tested at the creative genius level! The same children were tested again at ten years old, and only 30% tested as creative genius-es. By 15 years old, that number fell to 12%. Two hundred and eighty thousand adults were given the same test and only 2% of those adults tested at the genius level. What’s going on here?

I believe we are born creative, but somewhere along the way, we begin to believe that we are flawed in this area. We may internalize messages about how things “should” look. We start to com-pare ourselves to others. Our inner critic develops, and we start believing it as truth. As a result, many people begin to shut down their creative expres-sion and go through life believing that it is no longer accessible or important.

Here’s the thing: Your ability to cre-ate something that looks the way you want it to look is a craft, a skill that can be learned and practiced. With enough dedication and hard work, most people can learn these skills if

You are more creative than you think!

SoulFully What is your first response when I tell you that you are creative? For many people, the immediate response is, “Oh, no! Not me! I’m not creative at all!” or “I can’t even draw a straight line with a ruler!”

they feel so inclined. Learning HOW to draw or paint is a skill.

When I talk about creative expres-sion, I’m not talking about the skill of painting or drawing. I’m refer-ring to that space in time when you show up to a blank page and start allowing your creativity, your life force, your soul, to show up in tan-gible form. The creativity that I’m referring to is the kind of creative expression that forces you to ignore your critic and get fully present. It is meditative and soul-stirring. It is not about the end result or having a pretty picture to hang on the wall. It is about getting out of your own way and reconnecting with who you were before life and society told you who you should be. It is about reclaiming your creativity.

Your creative expression offers a direct link between you and the power

This is what SoulFully Creative is all about. Building a deeper connection to your creative self, your spirituality, and other people through the creative process.

that is greater than you (choose what resonates—it’s all the same! Divine Energy, God, Your Higher Self, etc...). Ironically, it’s also the place where your inner critic feels most welcome to show up and scream at you! What if you gathered in a circle with others to confront that inner critic head-on in a safe space? The creative process also offers valuable life lessons like dealing with the unexpected, trusting your intuition, resisting the urge to compare your-self to others, and moving through uncertainty. How might learning to push through these barriers in the creative process help you show up more fully in your life? How might your connection to your spir-ituality deepen if you make time to listen and allow that inner voice to come out in a tangible, visible form that only you can bring forth? How could you relate to people in a more authentic way if you were to share these experiences and insights with others?

Bowie Library gets a boost from Bowie PTSA!by Tara Walker-LeonThe library is the most recent beneficiary of the Bowie PTSA’s

annual Build Up Bowie campaign. Students are enjoying and utilizing the new furniture and charging stations. Since August, the library has had 40,472 student visits so addi-tional furniture was desperately needed to accommodate all patrons. I am new to Bowie this year. I live in Shady Hollow and have known so many Bowie students since they were little kids. I have three daughters and one is currently attending Bowie. I am thoroughly enjoying my first year here, everyone has been very supportive and helpful. A book I recommend for parents and children to read is Educated by Tara Westover. This powerful memoir is an excellent example of perseverance, dedication, and forgiveness. This book forces the reader to reexamine the traditional notion of education and family. Keep on reading.
