Band, and ice cream party on the library deck
If you have any questions, please contact the library at 541-296-2815.
We meet at 6:30 p.m. the
third Thursday of each
month upstairs in the maga-
zine corner. Each month
there is a new book to read
and discuss.
The book we are reading
for the May discussion is
Year of wonders: a novel of the
plague, by Geraldine Brooks.
When an infected bolt of
cloth carries plague from
London to an isolated vil-
lage, a housemaid named
Anna Frith emerges as an
unlikely heroine and healer.
Through Anna's eyes we
follow the story of the fate-
ful year of 1666, as she and
her fellow villagers confront
the spread of disease and
superstition. As death reach-
es into every household and
villagers turn from prayers
to murderous witch-
hunting, Anna must find the
strength to confront the dis-
integration of her communi-
ty and the lure of illicit love.
As she struggles to survive
and grow, a year of catastro-
phe becomes instead annus
mirabilis, a "year of won-
ders."
For those of you that need
to plan a little further in ad-
vance, the book for July will
be The Master Butchers Sing-
ing Club, by Louise Erdrich.
Copies of these books (as
well as audio recordings) are
widely available in the Sage
Library System. All readers
are welcome (and for those
of you wondering, NO, you
do not have to have a library
card in order to join us),
even if you haven’t finished
the book.
“Third Thursday” book group

library could be so much fun! A

for you. The Dufur Knitting Club meets on Thursday
nights, from 6:00 until 8:00. For more information, you

Numbers
Someone recently asked how many items we had in this library. I made a guess, then decided to run a report and get an actual count. Good thing, because I was wrong! So, for those inquiring minds who want to know, this library has 78,449 items. Of that number over 4,000 are DVDs or VHS tapes; and more than 1,000 are audio books, both adults and children’s. The rest are a combi-nation of books and magazines.
Reading Everywhere!
That is the theme for the Summer Reading Program to be held at the Dufur School/Community Library. All chil-dren, pre-K through sixth grade are invited to join in the summer reading fun. At 11:00 a.m. on Thursdays, start-ing June 26th, will be story and craft time. Contact the library at 541-467-2588 for additional information.

Blues and jam session
Guitarist Dorian Michael will play a mix of finger-style instrumentals and a big bunch of blues outside on the deck at The Dalles-Wasco County Public Li-brary on Monday, June 9th at 6:30 p.m. Original tunes, tra-ditional American roots music, a little Celtic and Brazilian and maybe a tune on the ukulele for good measure.
For over 40 years Dorian has been playing his unique blend of blues, jazz, folk, and rock and roll. His playing is both exciting and lyrical as he travels with enormous ease through the possibilities of the guitar. With a love and reverence for the music, Do-rian shares his dry wit with some amazing music.

ing, and donations are always welcome. Contact Shei-

It’s your Lucky Day!
We are so excited to tell you about this new
collection! You may have noticed the display of
books with a sticker on the cover proclaiming
“Lucky Day Book” and wondered what it was.
This is a collection of newer, best sellers, that are
available on a first come, first served basis. No
holds or renewals allowed, and you can only
check out one book from this collection. It is in-
deed your lucky day if the title you have been
looking for is there. The selection here is constant-
ly changing, so you never know what you might
find.
What are these covered objects?
You’ve probably noticed a few changes around the
library recently. The new security gates are the first
thing you notice as you enter the library. Instead of the
old, solid ones, these are a clear plexiglass. Something
else you might also have noticed is the way we now
check out most items. We place a stack of items on
that dark, square pad and they are checked out and
ready to go through the security gates. The other, very
obvious, thing you notice are the two covered items to
the east of the check-in computer. We’ve been telling
you that self-checkout was coming, and it is almost
here (note: you will need to have your library card in
order to use self-checkout). Watch for the grand un-
veiling, coming soon.
