We are excited to announce that this July will see the Library’s first ever Maker in Residence visiting the community of The Dalles. Artist Arthur Hash will travel to our community the last week of the month from Providence, RI where he is a professor of contemporary jewelry and advanced 3D digital manufacturing at the Rhode Island School of Design. Professor Hash is internationally recognized in his field for be- ing one of the first jewelers to use a 3D printer to make his work. Both his process and style have inspired designers around the world, and he can be credited as one of the original contributors to a growing movement of artists and designers using 3D printers. As a Maker in Residence, he will spend four days working in our library, using 3D printers and other technology to offer classes and a lec- ture to interested patrons. The residency will open with an Artist’s Talk on July 25 th at 6:30 pm discussing his life’s work and featuring im- agery and examples of pieces completed over the years. This lecture will be the open- ing of Professor Hash’s residency, which will also offer two classes on 3D printing for patrons of our library to sign up for. The first class on July 27th, titled Mini Makers, will offer teens a glimpse into basic modeling programs, 3D scanners, and 3D print- ers. Participants will get a chance to scan their face, load it and manipulate it on a computer, and finally print their own self portrait. On July 28 th and 29 th he will be of- fering a more extensive class, for patrons sixteen and older, teaching the basics of CAD modeling for 3D printers. Participants will learn the fundamentals of 3D design, reverse engineering, and 3d printing for the purpose of future projects. Both classes will be capped at 15 participants. Interested patrons can sign up starting July 3 rd at our front checkout desk. Arthur Hash’s residency will be the first in many Makers in Residence that we will be bringing in over the coming years, and we are looking forward to his visit. the first and third Monday of each month. Make awesome crafts and learn

from your friends. No experience needed.

Yu-gi-oh Club

It’s time to d-d-d-duel with your fellow Yu-gi-oh fans! Bring your deck and let the battle begin. Meets in the library’s meeting room at 3:30 p.m.

the first and third Thursday of each month.

Mystery/Crime Book Group

This book group meets on the second Thursday of the month, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. upstairs in the magazine cor-ner. The club reads LGBTQA materials and is open to all interested adults, no matter what your sexual orientation. The next meeting takes place on July 13th. If you have any questions or suggestions, or would like to sign up, call the library at 541-296-2815 and ask for Barbara.

Book groups of interest to adults

The Mystery/Crime Book Group meets upstairs in the magazine corner at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of most months. The book they are reading for the July 22nd meeting is A is for Alibi, by Sue Grafton. If there's one thing that makes Kinsey Millhone feel alive, it's playing on the edge. When her investigation turns up a second corpse, more suspects, and a new reason to kill, Kinsey discovers that the edge is closer―and sharper―than she imagined.

Pride Book Club

As the name implies, this group meets at 6:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month. The meetings are held upstairs in the magazine corner. The book for the July 20th discussion is Back when we were grownups, by Anne Tyler. "Once upon a time, there was a woman who discovered that she had turned into the wrong person." So Anne Tyler opens this irresistible new novel. The woman is Rebecca Davitch, a fifty-three-year-old grandmother. Is she an impostor in her own life? she asks herself. Is it indeed her own life? Or is it someone else’s? Anyone is welcome to join this discussion group, even if you haven’t read the book. There’s always room for one more.

Third Thursday Book Group

Sci-Fi Book Club

Another new book group is starting up, meeting the third Tuesday of each month. If you’re a fan of science fiction, then you’ll want to join this book club at The Dalles Public Library. You’ll meet other sci-fi fans, and talk about what books you’d like to read for discussion.

The next meeting will be July 18th at 5:30 p.m. in the library’s meeting room. They will be discussing The handmaids tale, by Margaret Atwood.

Brews & Books

Introducing our newest book group, Brews & Books, which meets the first Thursday of each month at 6:30. What makes the group so unique is the fact that it does not meet at the library, but instead will meet at various locations in the community. Each month the group will meet at a different place, such as Freebridge, Route 30, Sedition, and Clock Tower Ales. The meeting on July 6th will be at Freebridge Brewing. The book they will be discussing is The drunken botanist, by Amy Stewart. Sake began with a grain of rice. Scotch emerged from barley, tequila from agave, rum from sugarcane, bourbon from corn. Thirsty yet? In The Drunken Botanist, Amy Stewart explores the dizzying array of herbs, flowers, trees, fruits, and fungi that humans have, through ingenuity, inspiration, and sheer desperation, contrived to transform into alcohol over the centuries.
