A free H.O.P.E. (Haven Offering Patient Encouragement) Stroke Support Group meet-ing / Christmas Party will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, in Harlingen at Valley Baptist Medical Center (South Tower entrance, in the Woodward Conference Center, on the first

floor of the hospital), from 5:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. The celebra-tion will include a “Tamalada Fiesta,” with tamales and trimmings served at 6 p.m.

The Stroke Sup-port Group holds free monthly meet-ings and provides education and

support to stroke patients, family members and care givers.

A stroke is a “brain attack” - a type of cardiovascular disease that affects the arteries leading to the brain and the arteries within the brain. Stroke is a medical emergency – call 911 immediately if you or a loved one experi-ence symptoms. Remember: when it comes to stroke, the sooner that treatment begins, the better the patient’s chances of surviving without disabilities.

At Valley Baptist Medical Center, a clot-busting medication called tPA is used when medically indicated to reverse strokes – but the medication must be given as soon as possible after stroke symptoms begin. Valley Baptist is also the first hospital in the Valley to offer life-saving interventional stroke procedures, in which medications to reverse a stroke are administered directly to arteries supplying blood to a patient’s brain through catheters (thin tubes), in Valley Baptist’s new bi-plane lab / Neurovascular Angiography Suite. In other cases, the Interventional Neurologist, Dr. Ameer Hassan, may insert tiny medical devices to clear blockages in the blood vessel.

For more information about the Stroke Sup-port Group meeting / Christmas dinner, call (888) 902-5433 (LIFE), e-mail Debbie Diehl at [email protected], or visit www.facebook.

FUn WiTh eTiQUeTTeBy irma WolcottDear mrs. Wolcott, Christmas is upon us and this year i am so strapped for money. There are so many children in our family not to mention friends, co-workers, etc. i really can’t afford to buy many gifts this year but feel like not giving is not proper etiquette either. Do you have any suggestions? strapped for money Dear strapped, Did you know that this year many families are rejecting the materialism of Christ-mas? many people think it has gotten out of hand and the stress it creates is evident in your question. Christmas should be a time to celebrate the birth of Christ and the love of family and friends. You are defi nitely not alone when it comes to money issues either. i have heard from many people who have taken a pledge to put Christ back into Christ-mas. one suggestion is to script out a play enacting the birth of Jesus, or a skit of “The Little Drummer Boy” which can be found at: http://www.rec-room.org/Activities/stories/drummer.html. make that the center of your gathering instead of opening gifts, the day will take on a different meaning. have the children in your family draw names which will limit the number of gifts you have to buy. sometimes it’s just the surprise a gift holds that children love, so a bucket of cook-ies with a movie pass, some $5 coupons to restaurants, one game for a whole family, a pass to walk the dog for a month, a promise to help someone paint their house, a month of lawn work, the list goes on and on. Let your gifts show the spirit of love, joy, and goodwill that is brought about this time of year due to the birth of Christ. if you want to entertain and decorate but don’t feel you have the money, consider us-ing fruit and Christmas ornaments. string a ribbon through an apple or orange and hang on windows, glue some ornaments on a cardboard, remove the metal clips and slip some candles to make a clever table centerpiece. Cover the base with evergreen so the card-board doesn’t show and wa-la! have a Java Party. Just make coffee or chocolate and the guests can have fun “doctoring” up their drink. examples are a dish with cinnamon or cinnamon sticks, whipped cream, marshmallows, fl avored syrups, ground nutmeg, etc. you get the picture. The only food you need are biscotti’s or cookies. hope these suggestions help.
