HARLINGEN – The first H.O.P.E. (Haven Offer-ing Patient Encouragement) Stroke Support Group meeting for 2013 will be held on Tuesday, January 15, at 6 p.m. at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, in the Woodward Conference Center on the first floor of the hospital (South Tower entrance). Refreshments will be served.

Speaker for the meeting will be Chaplain Joe Perez, Vice President for Pastoral Services for Val-ley Baptist. Chaplain Perez will deliver an inspira-tional message entitled “Be Resolute.” He received his master of divinity degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and has served as a chaplain for Valley Baptist for more than 20 years.

The Stroke Support Group provides education and support to stroke patients, family members and care givers. Meetings are free and open to the public.

Stroke is the nation’s third leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability, and Valley Baptist-Harlingen provides specialized life-saving stroke services -- including medications that can reverse strokes in certain cases if the patient arrives soon after symptoms begin.

Valley Baptist is also the first Valley hospital to offer interventional stroke procedures. During this procedure, medications to reverse a stroke are administered directly to arteries supplying blood to a patient’s brain through catheters (thin tubes), in Valley Baptist’s new Biplane Lab / Neurovascular Angiography Suite. In other cases, after the catheter is guided toward the patient’s brain, the interven-tional neurologist may insert tiny medical devices to clear blockages in the blood vessel.

In addition, life-saving care provided by Valley Baptist physicians and employees made Valley Baptist-Harlingen and Valley Baptist-Brownsville the only hospitals in the Valley – and two of only four hospitals in the state of Texas – to receive “Gold Plus” awards for care of both stroke patients and heart failure patients from the American Heart Association for 2012.
