Class of 2018 ShowcaseMarch 13, 2018

LEXINGTON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

An Institute for Excellence in the Fine Arts In addition to an excellent college preparatory rigor, the Lexington Catho-lic High School Exemplar Scholars Program in the Fine Arts is designed to take our most talented Fine Arts students and expose them to a wide range of creative opportunities. In doing so, the program allows Exemplar Scholars in the Fine Arts to experience collaboration, mentorship, and au-dience exposure at an unprecedented level.

Given this goal, the Exemplar Scholars Program includes a four-year aca-demically rigorous curriculum that will require its students to earn addi-tional credits above the minimum 25 credits required to graduate.

Additionally, students will be provided opportunities to exercise their tal-ents alongside professionals in various fields within the Fine Arts.

The program includes the following majors: Visual Arts, Theater Arts, Vo-cal Music, and Instrumental Music in Band or Piano.

Exemplar Scholars will be required to present their work in the form of a culminating Senior Project which will vary with each discipline in the Lex-ington Catholic Fine Arts Department. The Exemplar Scholars Fine Arts Senior Projects include a recital, an exhibition, and a theatrical perfor-mance all designed to give students the chance to demonstrate their mas-tery of skills and talent gained from the Exemplar Scholars Program.

Program Highlights Include:

Highly Selective Admissions ProcessIncreased Academic RigorMentorships with Fine Arts ProfessionalsOpportunities to Showcase Talents to the Public Culminating Senior Project

What a joy it has been for me to take over the reins of this program. The past two years have been a learning experience on so many levels. The best part for me has been getting to know, help, and interact with the students. What a treat!

When I was a student at Transylvania University, I had many opportunities to feed my love of the arts while pursuing a degree in teaching Biology. I have been appre-ciative of that ever since. I took many classes in visual arts, art history, and theater. Since college I have been so busy in my own career paths, I have not been able to fill that love as much as I would like. Becoming the director of the Exemplar Scholar Program has allowed me to integrate the fine arts into my career. What a welcome addition for which I am extremely grateful!

These seniors have proven in their four years to be a hard-working, driven, and fun group. Tonight you will get to see firsthand the diverse talents that have made the process of putting together this Showcase a lot of fun…and a little stressful. It has been my privilege to work with these students and see them through to their Show-case this evening. I thank them for their patience while I was still learning what they need from me and how I could help to make their Showcase a special night to cel-ebrate their talents with their friends and families.

As they head off to college, I can say without a doubt, that each of these students will be successful at whatever they put their minds to. I cannot wait to see what is in store for each one of them. I wish each of them the best of luck. The only way they will disappoint me is if they don’t return to visit me and LCHS!

Thank you for being a part of the Exemplar Scholars Program and congratulations!

Ann T. Bruggeman - Director of the Exemplar Scholars

Dear Lexington Catholic Community,

I am proud to welcome you to the Exemplar Scholars for Fine Arts Showcase, the culminating activity celebrat-ing the extraordinary talents and accomplishments of the Exemplar Scholar students.

In 2012, Lexington Catholic put the finishing touches on our launch of the Exemplar Scholars for Fine Arts program with hopes it would become an impressive program of meaningful academic rigor, intellectual curiosity and exploration, and student achievement. As we celebrate the work and accomplishments of this year’s senior class, I am proud to say we’ve accomplished these goals in large part because of the students and young people who make up the Class of 2018. They have distinguished themselves and our school by their performance, com-mitment and achievements these past four years.

I applaud our students and their families for their incredible commitment leading to today’s activities. I know you will be as impressed with their efforts as I am.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steve Angelucci

President

We are pleased that you are joining us for the Fine Arts Showcase to celebrate the accomplishments of our gradu-ating seniors. While they study different disciplines, they all reflect the interconnectedness of their curricula. Visual artists, musicians, and theater students have worked together to demonstrate the best of their learning to prepare this evening for all of us to enjoy. These students have not only concentrated developing their abilities in the arts but have complemented those experiences with a strong well-balanced curriculum in all other areas, preparing them for their next academic journeys. I especially want to thank our students who have enriched our school community through their accomplishments in their specific disciplines. Thank you to all the parents who have supported them over these four years without your dedication tonight would not have been possible. Enjoy your evening at the showcase and thanks again to all who have made this evening possible.

Sincerely,

Sally Stevens

Personal Description of Fine Arts Portfolio/Showcase Presentation:

Being an Exemplar Scholar and having the opportunity to participate in this program these last four years has really been a blessing. I cannot thank Mrs. Weitkamp, Mr. Banks, and Mr. Jackson enough for all the wonder-ful lessons that have helped me grow both as a musician and a person. Tonight I am able to show a little of that musical growth by playing both my previous solo and ensemble piece and Kenny G’s Sister Rose. Sister Rose is particularly special to me because I originally auditioned for Exemplar Scholars with the Kenny G version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and I love getting to go full circle with music I am passionate about.

Words of Wisdom: Take as many ESP lit classes as you can. Not only are they a great opportunity to learn from phenomenal teachers, but it has allowed me to get even closer to the other ESP-FA students, who I have grown to love and will truly miss.

I will be playing Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. I am playing this song because everyone knows very well and it’s my favorite song to play. Learning the chords and the timing for this song took a great deal of time, which is always the case, but I enjoyed it. This song was also the first song I decided to memorize for my senior recital.

Words of Wisdom: Take your classes needed and enjoy what you do, if not you’ll have a hard time enjoying high school.

Personal Description of Fine Arts Portfolio/Showcase Presentation:

The four years here in the Exemplar Scholars Program have been very difficult, but great for my growth in the area of visual arts. I work very hard and I am a perfectionist, which sometimes get me behind on my work. I find it very to look at any of my art pieces as truly finished. Tonight’s pieces are a collection of my works that look most finished at this point.

Words of Wisdom: Do work early.

Personal Description of Fine Arts Portfolio/Showcase Presentation:Hello, all! Thank you for coming! I cannot express how much I have enjoyed participating in the arts here at Lex-ington Catholic over the past four years. Participating in theatre and choir has given me a passion, a career path, and a family that I never expected, and I am grateful for every moment. High school is hard, and the arts are what have kept me sane. I know I’ll be okay if I have rehearsal after school, or if I can spend time with my friends in the choir room during Flex. I’d like to thank my fellow classmates in the ESP program, my parents, my best friend Katie Vazzana, and my teachers: Joanna McCarty-Rogers, Mr. West, Ms. Owen, and Mr. Vanover, who have been a constant and encouraging presence in my life.

This evening, I will be performing “Ch’io mai vi possa” from Handel’s opera Siroe. In this piece, my character Emira has just been proposed to by Siroe, her beloved, whom she had believed dead until a few moments be-fore. The text translates to: “That I could ever stop loving you! Do not believe it, dearest eyes; not even for a joke would I deceive you. You were and are my love’s sparks; and you will be, dearest eyes, my beautiful fire, as long as I shall live.”

Words of Wisdom: #1: Take Honors British Literature with Mr. Geraci. I cannot express how much this class has meant to me; I can honestly say that it has changed my life more than anything else I’ve experienced. In that classroom, I encountered God and humanity in ways that were both profound and profoundly fun. I miss it be-yond words, and it is with the deepest sincerity that I encourage you to take it. You will not be disappointed.

#2: Be open to new possibilities. When I started high school, I loved musical theatre more than anything, and I strongly disliked classical music. Today, I am beyond excited to begin pursuing a degree and a career in classical operatic performance. This change occurred gradually due to the influence of musical productions, voice lessons, summer programs, and the LCHS Choir. I wouldn’t change it for the world!
