Print out this document, and cut out the event squares for each phase. Then see if you can place them where they belong by following the story they tell. In this lab, you will use the storyboards to put the story of Russia in order.

As we’ve said, history is about much more than datesand famous people’s names and memorizing what happened when. Often, we have to see history as a storyto understand how history works------and how it still affectsus today.

Another difficult thing about history is that it is almost impossible to find an account of history that does not contain bias.

For this Lab, use these storyboards to put the story of Russia in order-------the names and dates have been redacted from the event descriptions to emphasize that when you look at a sequence of events for what they are, theyusually make a lot more sense than if we were to read about them from themedia, or even textbooks!

Print out this document, and cut out the event squares for each phase.Then see if you can place them where they belong by following the story theytell.

PHASE IThe inhabitants flee to another

one of their cities they built,and that city becomes moreprosperous than the last one.

The new city becomes a centerof resistance against the

foreign occupiers.

PHASE IEventually, people settle there,

begin to make permanentsettlements. The first people

there get the place tothemselves, and begin to

prosper

Together, the two groups create larger, more organized

cities, and they prosper further.

PHASE I

Eventually, the inhabitantsmanage to drive the foreign

occupiers out.

PHASE I

Other people still pass throughon their way to the other side,but hear about the growing

prosperity of the settlers. Theywant a piece of it, and move in

The leader of the campaignbecomes the ruler of the

whole country.

The now more prosperous cities attract attention from

another, more powerfulnation, who add to their

empire by forcefully takingcontrol.

PHASE II

In an effort to fund furtherexpansion, the rulers put

the people to work onfarms as serfs

The rulers and the peopleboth realize the change wastoo little too late—the gapbetween rich and poor isnot getting any smaller

The freed workers move outof the countryside and seek

new lives in the cities

The country grows inpower and expands

PHASE IIINew leaders are put in

place, but after centuries ofthe old system, it’s difficultfor new leaders to get theirfooting, especially in a time

of turmoil.

PHASE III

The people’s frustrationboils into a violent civil waras they put their popular

leader into power.

Shortly after, a leaderpopular with the people

emerges with the promiseof bringing more power to

the people and a moreequal spread of wealth.

PHASE III

The new leader spreads hisphilosophies into

neighboring countries;together they form

a new country.

PHASE III

A catalyst for overthrowingthe government emerges—

the country is drawninto war

PHASE IIIWars cost money. And theeconomy is already weak.Making the people pay for

the war by raising taxesmakes the already angry

people angrier.

PHASE III

The people decide enoughis enough. They rebel

against the government.

People who oppose thenew leader are sent to

prison camps in remoteplaces in the country.

The country is caught upin a world-wide war.

Revolution leader dies, new leader comes to power.

PHASE IV: THE SOVIET UNION

New leader tries toindustrialize the country,

at all costs.

It pours money into costlyprograms to asserttechnological and

scientific superiority, entersanother war in a nearby

country, and experiencesmany economic difficulties.

After the war, the countryfinds itself in political

control of a sizable chunkof its part of the world.

The country invades nearbycountries, has a lot of internalproblems during the war, has

significant troubles with someof its allies and former allies,but ends up on the winning

side of the war.

Seeking to establish itself asthe world’s premier super-

power, and under new leader-ship the country fiercely

competes for prominence asthe world’s premier super-

power with the world’sother superpower.

The country begins torealize that its economy

cannot support its politicalambitions.

PHASE V

Elections produce anadditional new leader, and

people from the former parttry to re-take control, but fail.

New leader introduces newpolicies that are meant to

reconstruct the economy andallow its people to discusspolitics for the first time.

PHASE V

The new changes lead tothe country allowing free

elections.

PHASE V

Today, leaders still struggle tohelp the country fulfill itseconomic potential, while

inheriting the country’sgeographic, historical, and

political challenges. But thepeople are hopeful.

PHASE V

The new country settles into anew economic system, fromone run by the government,

to one run by the people.

PHASE V

The country, still made up ofa group of smaller countriessince its revolutionary days,can no longer keep all thecountries together. They

separate.
