Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome back to term 4, the most exciting and busiest term of the year.
We have Presentation Day, Year 6 Farewell, Diwali Celebration, Colour
Run, student reports and many more events! The Stage 3 focus for STEM
is “It’s Electrifying” (not the movie Grease) but an exciting unit on energy.
Mr Stephen has the kits all prepared for science, while in maths they will
be competing in the balloon car challenge.

Mrs Miller for organising the girl’s resilience program for students
in years 4-6 run by Enlighten. The feedback from parents and
students was very positive and sets our girls up to have the skills to
support themselves and others. If you see one of them wearing a
purple wrist band, ask them why.
The P&C for a fantastic Movie Night. As always it was perfectly
organised for fun and community spirit!

Mr Stephen and 5/6S for their achievements in this years
2018 AUSTRALIAN & NEW ZEALAND MATHS OLYMPIAD. Our students
competed against over 5000 schools (250000 students). Having improved
their overall place for the last 3 consecutive years, the class's goal was to
try and crack the Top 10 for the first time. This year they finished in 4th
place! All students are to be congratulated for their fine efforts and
individual and team results!

Welcome to:
Miss Ciara Stapleton who will be with us from this week until the end of the term. Miss Stapleton will be taking RFF and
team teaching Guided Inquiry in the library. Miss Stapleton is a reliable and efficient casual teacher who has been
working at LPS throughout the year. We welcome her to LPS in this temporary position.

Just had to send a quick email re Infants Athletics on Friday. I thoroughly enjoyed the morning and would like to compliment the older students who assisted with the
activities on the day. They were very supportive and helpful to the younger students and knew exactly what needed to be done with little supervision.
The behaviour of all students was fantastic and the day excellent thanks to the staff.

I was delighted to see you today morning wearing the road safely uniform helping students to cross the road. It is an absolutely fantastic culture that you have covered duties for someone. This is totally in contrast to the nature of school officials in the country I came from. Generally people do not send emails, appreciating and giving positive comments, and the human nature is such that we only communicate when we have a concern. But today, I thought of doing the opposite. We have been in Sydney for more than one year, and I do greatly appreciate your assistance and the kindness of the two teachers Ms. Seeney and Ms. Te Mari who helped my young daughter to settle absolutely well in this new culture. I also wanted to convey that we're more than satisfied about the attention paid to students and the opportunities our children receive from Leumeah Public School. I had a talk with: Mrs Hall (grandmother) who was very impressed at the number of teachers who attended the Aboriginal
Achievement Awards on Monday night. Each students’ teacher was there as well as Mrs Hambley and Mrs Maytom, as the Aboriginal Committee co-ordinator. We are very proud of the achievements of Jessie May H, Stephen H, Seilina M and Isabella D. Many thanks to their teachers for their nominations: Miss Hall, Mrs Mathews, Miss Smith and Miss Paget.
Mrs Oaks (grandmother) on the P&C Movie night who complimented the staff on their enthusiasm and dedication. We talked about how fortunate we are to have such talented staff who genuinely care and want what’s best for our students.
Staff Leave Mrs Hardiman will be on leave for three weeks. We welcome Mrs Emma Williams to 5/6T and wish Mrs Hardiman all the best for her leave . Mr Torpy has had to extend his leave till 26.11.18. We wish Mr Torpy the best for his recovery and are pleased
that Mrs Steen will be retained to teach 1/2F. Kind regards

From the Deputy Principal’s Desk Welcome back to a new term. I trust that all our families had an enjoyable holiday break. I was fortunate to spend five weeks with my family touring around the United State of America. Whilst I had an amazing time, I am glad to be back in Australia, sharing the learning journey with the students of LPS. A big thank you to Mrs Croman for filling the Deputy Principal shoes in my absence. Not returning or late returners in 2019 It is that time of year, where we start making plans for 2019. In order for our plans to remain reasonably organised for a successful start to the year, we need to know which families will not be returning to LPS and those students who will be returning but will be starting after school begins. Students in Years 1 - 6 will start the school year on Wednesday January 30. If you are away at this time, you will need to notify us. In order to let us know if you are not returning or are returning late in 2019, please contact the administration office, email the school or respond to a message that will come out on Sentral. If you are returning late, and your return will be longer than a week from the 30/1, you will complete an application for extended leave. These forms are also available in the office. Congratulations to KA, KB and KC students, who are learning how to post their work to Seesaw. Kindergarten are work-ing with the iPads, Mrs Bull, Miss Roach and Mrs Shankar, to:

They have had two weeks of practice and they have also been saving these images too. This is an achievement for Early Stage 1 students! Well done, Mrs Bull, Miss Roach and Mrs Shankar. Below are some examples of their work:

360 Survey
On Monday you may have received an email to assist our school in completing a survey, 'The 360 Reflection Tool'. This
is an on line survey which will provide principals, school leaders and other school based staff the opportunity to reflect
on, better understand and gather feedback on relationships and communication with parents, students and the wider
community. This survey is designed to help our leadership team make decisions for future and we would appreciate
your support in filling this out.

From the Library Committee
Our library is having a face-lift and there are lots of exciting things planned for our students. Some of the
changes include flexible seating, new technology, updating texts and purchasing student interest books. We have
also planned to have writeable tables and workable walls, including a lego wall. If you have any lego that is no longer
being used by your children, we would love for you to donate it to our library.
With these changes, lunchtime will be set up differently. All of our current desk top computers have been moved into
classrooms and when our new furniture arrives, students will be able to use the portable devices. Students can still
come up and borrow and use the library as a social environment.
I know many of the students love the music Mrs Stephens is playing. Mrs Miller has started a coding club for K-2 on
Thursdays and this will be extended to 3-6 in the coming weeks. A message will be sent to students to notify them when
it will begin.
As a committee, we want to brighten up our walls by painting some murals. If you work for a company that supplies
gyprock or plasterboard and they are able to donate this to our school, please let us know.

In the last newsletter we announced that our school was successful in obtaining a grant for an Armistice memorial.
Please remember to collect plastic bottle caps in orange, blue, yellow, black, red, white, grey and green. These can be
left in a box in the office.
Sentral Parent App
We are aware of some login and stability issues that parents are having with the Sentral App. We have
been in contact with the provider and they are currently working on fixing the issues as soon as
possible. If you are having issues with the App apart from the login issue could you please let us know
by the school email so that we can contact the provider to have the problem fixed.
Don’t forget that if you are experience login issues with the App you can still log into the Parent Portal
via the internet via https://web1.leumeah-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/portal2/#!/login

3/4Q has completed a unit on Earth and Space through STEM. We linked this unit to visual arts.
We created the solar system art work through using spray bottles for the background and oil
pastels for our planets.
We extended on this by using the spray bottles and inventing our own planets by
experimenting with different effects.
Stage 3 - 2019 High School Transition Program: Links to Learning
Selected students are taking part in the Links to Learning program, which supports students transitioning to High school
in 2019. Students take part in HS ready activities such as reading a timetable and what does friendship look like.
Students are enjoying sharing what they have learnt with their classes.

Students’ Reflection
In Links to Learning, we made a time capsule that we can open when we are in year 7; it is full of interesting things.
Together we learnt about different styles of learning and most importantly how to have a positive mindset. We studied
about Are You Okay Day and our support networks at HS. We have focused upon many things such as timetables,
different bells and friendships. We spoke about high school worries. The most exciting thing was constructing a board
game where we investigated high school activities.

Enlighten Program Reflection
Year 4 - 6 girls attended the Enlighten Education workshop a LPS this week. The workshops are designed to support girls with decoding mixed messages and to develop self-worth and resilience skills. Thank you Mrs Miller for organising.
Students’ Reflection
Today the 23/10/2018 girls in stages 2-3 had an all-girls workshop. Where we did workshops and activities, our instructor was named Nikki and she helped us learn how to be ourselves. We did things such as creating journals, learning you are amazing just the way you are and you are perfect in your own skin. Then in our journals other people wrote compliments about us, at the end of that we read our books everyone was happy with their compliments and some people cried. At the end of the day we got wristbands and butterfly cards. With the wristbands we have to wear them on our left hand for three weeks and not remove it, and every time we think we can’t do something we have to look at our wristband and say I can do it and after the 3 weeks are up we change it and put it on our right hand. Stage 3 STEM: Energy & Light learning
STEM education is the learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in an integrated approach. Stage 3
students are learning about energy and light this term. Students will be developing their creative and critical thinking
skills. This week 5/6R and 5/6X have been investigated how to move a car using wind force (deflating balloon). Students
are to be congratulated for the rich scientific terminology they were using. Taryn replied “the balloon will use force to
propel the car”. Mitchell said “the remote transfers information”. I have been very excited about the rich learning and
scientific investigation that is occurring through STEM.

Recognition for English Award: Achievement Award
Write Along is an annual writing competition open to all students in Years
1 to 12. The competition compliments learning in the classroom and the
NSW English Syllabus. Write Along provides students with the opportunity
to become published authors. Students are encouraged to let their
imaginations run wild and get their creative juices flowing to write on any
topic and in any style.
Congratulations to all award winners at Leumeah Public School. We are so proud of you all!
An excerpt from Lunas’ Story
This is about a girl. She has two friends Logan and Tom. Her life is about to change…. Hi I’m Ann, I’m starting high school today with my best friends Logan and Tom. We are a trio they are the sand and I am the castle, I am really excited to make new friends and learn new things at my high school (I really love school and making friends!). My first day is going to be awesome! Today was ok I guess ………. If you would like to read the rest of the story Luna is excited to share.
Leumeah Public School Presentation Assembly
All parents/caregivers and community are invited to attend the prestigious Leumeah Public School Presentation Assembly. This is a time to celebrate the learning, achievements and the highlights of our school year.
Rainbow Walkathon: - Fundraiser
Rainbow Walkathon information went home this week.
This year we are using Credit Union Australia’s School FUN RUN
Fundraising Program. The walkathon will incorporate a colour run
segment where students can choose to get covered in coloured
powder.
Where: Leumeah Public School
When: Friday 16 November 2018, from 1:20 – 2:50pm
Cost: $10 if partaking in the colour zone (1 large packet of coloured powder, wristband and entry into the colour zone)
Payment due: 3:00pm Thursday 1 November 2018. Method of payment (cash or Parent Online Payment POP). If pay-
ing online please enter “Rainbow Walkathon” in the payment description under “INCURSIONS”.
Student requirements for the Colour Run
Wear white old clothing ( as colour might not wash
out) if partaking in the colour walkathon section.
Goggles are also advised to stop coloured flour getting
into eyes.
An old towel would also be recommended to be able to
clean up afterwards or to be placed on the bus seat if
taking the bus home.
Not partaking in Colour Run: Colourful outfit and hat. Bottled
water is also advised.
Students who chose to partake in the Rainbow Walk section will receive their coloured bag of powder for the final
colour showdown after the walkathon.
Sponsorship
This year we are using the online donation website schoolfundraising.com.au. All you need to do set up your child’s
sponsorship page. To do this go to the website, schoolfundraising.com.au click on STUDENT SIGN UP and follow the
prompts. You can share your fundraising link with friends and family and they can easily donate via the donation
website.
Do you need help registering? We recommend using the online donation forum and if you are unsure or experiencing any troubles, Miss Hall is having a Community Sponsorship Help Day/s:

Year 5 Leadership Sessions: 2019 Prefect position To support Year 5 students in becoming leaders in 2019, we will be holding 2 sessions at school which will provide students with some understanding about what being a leader involves. At the conclusion of these sessions students will have an opportunity to complete an application form so they can apply for a 2019 Prefect position. Students will have one week to complete their application form. Successful applicants will then be invited to present a speech to students from Years 2-6 on Wednesday 14th November, 2018. Students in Years 2-5 will then vote and the top 12 students (6 girls and 6 boys) will represent LPS in 2019 as Prefects. The 2019 Prefects will be introduced at the Stage 3 Presentation Day and the two captains will be announced. P & C News Thank you to all our LPS community who attended, supported and volunteered at our community movie night. We had a
fabulous night and made some wonderful new friends in our community.
Together we raised $1200 towards future fundraising projects.
Cheryl Owen Award for Volunteers
This award is named in honour of the late Cheryl Owen, a woman who tirelessly gave her time and effort to Leumeah
Public School over a number of years. This award is open to all carers and supporters of Leumeah Public School who
work in a voluntary capacity - parents, grandparents, friends etc.
Our previous recipients were Mrs Baraka, Mrs Anderson, Mr Goodlet and Mrs So, typical of people within our school
community who work throughout the year, dedicating their time and effort, usually behind the scenes, for the benefit of
others. They are not alone when it comes to helpers in our school. There are many, many quiet achievers that give up
their time, energy and even money for all our benefit, for the greater good. Scripture classes, classroom support for
teachers, assisting at gala days, sports carnivals, swimming carnivals and excursions; participation in the P&C, other
school events like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day stalls, events and discos. These are all the types of activities that need
helpers, and need people to commit for success to be achieved. Who do you know who helps out at our school in any
way and deserves recognition?
This is a special award honouring the memory of a very special woman, commemorated by a shield in our front office,
and an individual certificate presented to the recipient. Please give our wonderful volunteers the recognition they de-
serve by nominating and voting.
Cheryl Owen Award Nominations
Keep your eye open early next term for a volunteer of the year award, the Cheryl Owen award. A note will head home
with all the details on how to nominate and vote for someone in our community who volunteers their time to help LPS in
the classroom, at scripture, during sport or for the P&C. This award is presented at our presentation day at the end of
Term 4.

assemblies.

You will receive a letter the week prior to the assembly if your child is receiving their platinum badge.

Learning Labs
The University of Wollongong would like to invite your students to LITTLE AND EARLY LEARNING LABS, an academic
enrichment holiday program. We are targeting students from Year 1 to 6 during 2018, who are passionate,
self-motivated and curious learners.
