Iraqis usually employ a polite way of asking someone’s name by using the phrase El-Ism el-kareem which means the generous name as a metaphor. They address a man in an office environment with (Us-tath) for Mr., or Sir and a woman with (Sit) for madam, or miss. If you are introduced to an old, public or religious figure, you should always address them with sayd, haji or ‘aa-mi which shows high respect. When you meet someone for the first time, address him/her with his or her title or (Abo…. /Um…) father of…./mother of ……
