LCCC’s Diversity Committee will present keynote speaker Francesca Kennedy, founder and CEO of Ix Style, on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 6 p.m., in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month. This event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Lisa Scheller and Wayne Woodman Community Services Center at the college’s main campus in Schnecksville, Pa.

Ix Style (pronounced “eye ex”) was launched in 2013 by Kennedy, whose family is originally from Guatemala. Ix Style is based in Tribeca in New York City with offices in Miami and Guatemala. She is one of the first contestants on a version of Shark Tank called Project Runway: Fashion Startup, produced by Harvey Weinstein set to air this fall on Lifetime with an exciting outcome (tune in October 20). Ix Style has collaborated with The Gap, J. Crew, Anthropologie, Gwyneth Paltrow for Goop, ShopBop, Holt Renfrew, United Arrows, Four Seasons and Viceroy resorts. Kennedy is one of two 2016 Access Latina grant recipients, a Stanford Latino Entrepreneur Leader, a TED talk resident and the 2016 Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s Entrepreneur of the Year.

Ix is the Mayan word for water and sells sandals, handbags and jewelry made by Mayan artisans in Guatemala. For every purchase, Ix donates to

provide clean drinking water to children. Francesca was inspired to help after seeing the once beautiful Lake Atitlan in Guatemala that she swam in as a child overrun with blue green algae and a new generation of children collecting and drinking the contaminated water.

Faculty NewsAssociate Professor Sue Miner has been accepted as a

member of the National Cyber Watch Center’s Curriculum Standards Panel (CSP). She will be working with colleagues

across the country to produce the nation’s first curriculum model for cybersecurity education. The standards will be the first to align instructional design, skill practice facilities, cybersecurity professional job performance standards, national workforce frameworks and industry

needs. The Core Cybersecurity Course Mapping Project will be the first of several planned initiatives from the National Cyber Watch Center to produce formative credentialing solutions that increase the number of capable cybersecurity professionals protecting our nation from cyber incursion and increasing the reliability and effectiveness of the computing infrastructure critical to our national security and economic prosperity.

Javier Avila Highlights Diversity Events Nov. 2LCCC’s Diversity Committee will hold a Hispanic Heritage event with Javier Avila, of Bethlehem, a professor at

Northampton Community College (NCC), at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2. The talk will be held in rooms 107-108 of the Alumni Center on LCCC’s Schnecksville campus.

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Avila attended the University of Puerto Rico and was hired at age 23 as a full-time professor after graduating with his master’s degree. He went on to complete his doctorate program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. At NCC, Avila teaches English, creative writing, poetry and contemporary literature.

Nominated by NCC, Avila was honored as the 2015 Pennsylvania Professor of the Year Award sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. He is a renowned poet and novelist and achieved international recognition for his bestselling novel “Different,” which went on to become an award-winning motion picture in a dozen countries. He will perform his one-man show, “The Trouble with My Name,” which has earned him praise as a powerful voice for Latinos in the U.S.

Avila’s presentation spotlights his qualities as a poet and professor, profiling the autobiographical journey of a Latino man moving between cultures while overcoming misconceptions about identity, language, race and social justice. His message exceeds the boundaries or color, ethnicity and geography.

College Co-Sponsors Heroin WorkshopLehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) will partner with the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) and Lehigh County to

offer a four-week course focusing on the dangers of heroin. Each course addresses a different topic, so attendance at each session is encouraged.

The first session (Tuesday, Oct. 25), will focus on families and individuals who have been impacted by heroin addiction. This will be a first-hand perspective on the far reaching impact of heroin addiction on a community.

During the second session, set for Wednesday, Nov. 2, scientists will explain about heroin’s cultivation process and other synthetic drugs. Individuals will learn how addiction works and about the transition that takes place from pain pills to heroin.

Week three (Wednesday, Nov. 9) discusses enforcement through different agencies, such as the Pennsylvania State Police, the District Attorney’s office, Lehigh County Probation and Lehigh County Coroner. The last week (Wednesday, Nov. 16) describes treatment options provided by local heroin recovery centers and the contact information that is available to addicts seeking places to get help.

Sessions will be held at the Scheller-Woodman Community Services Center from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the college’s main campus in Schnecksville, Pa.

College Responds to ITT Tech Closing

Lehigh Carbon Community College joins many of Pennsylvania’s 14 public community colleges who are reaching out to students who had been attending for-profit colleges that recently closed their doors. Since late August, three for-profit colleges with 13 campuses in the state – Cambria-Rowe Business College, DuBois Business College and ITT Technical Institute – have closed.

ITT Tech students who are interested in reaching out to LCCC with questions about transfer admission and the transferability of college-level credits are encouraged to complete an online form at www.lccc.edu/itt. LCCC admissions representatives and advisors are available to assist with questions concerning transfer and college and career advising.

LCCC may accept selected credits from other institutions based on a program/major of study. ITT students are encouraged to submit an application and transcript for evaluation. The college will review college credits on a course-by-course basis for transfer consideration. Students transferring to LCCC must complete the application and have a transcript evaluation/academic advising appointment with an LCCC advisor.

LCCC offers open enrollment, which requires a student have a high school diploma or GED certificate to be eligible for admissions and financial aid. Students should also submit a copy of their official high school and any college-level transcript including ITT Tech.

The LCCC Aviation program has enjoyed well-earned publicity lately for its new partnership with ExpressJet Airlines. An article appeared in the Sept. 7 issue of the Flight Safety Information newsletter, which is distributed to more than 36,000 people. The Lehigh Valley Insider, published by the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation, also ran an article about the partnership. The program will also be featured in an upcoming issue of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s Flight Training magazine.

ghost hunt class to celebrate the Halloween season by experiencing the things that go bump in the night with this new two-part event as the college presents

the “Fun Fridays in Allentown” series. “Ghost Hunt” presents paranormal investigation techniques in the classroom on Oct. 21 from 6:30 to

9:30 p.m. and concludes with an investigation from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. or 9:30 to 11:30 at Miller Symphony Hall on Oct. 28.

The team of investigators includes Bob Schaeffer, founder of the Blue Mountain Paranormal Society, and Mark Keyes, author of the newly released book, “Chasing Shadows” and founder of the Pennsylvania Paranormal Association, which was featured on Animal Planet’s “The Haunted” series. “Tamaqua Has Heart” Invites Art Submissions

The Tamaqua Community Arts Center is embarking on a community arts project, “Tamaqua Has Heart,” and LCCC has committed to being a sponsor of the activity.

As part of our sponsorship, we are supporting one of the hearts. We would like for artists affiliated with the college to submit designs to be considered.

Milestone AwardLCCC will be recognized at the Nov. 10 Greater

Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce annual meeting with the Milestone Award, in recognition of the 50th anniversary. President Dr. Ann D. Bieber will accept the award on behalf of the college, attending the event with members of the Board of Trustees and LCCC employees. The Milestone Award is presented to a member of the chamber that has reached a significant landmark in business, a high point of superior commitment to the community and brings a notable measure of pride to the chamber and the entire Lehigh Valley.

The Greater Lehigh Valley Realtors Association Economic Outlook meeting met on campus Sept. 29, bringing more than 200 people to campus. Chamber director Tony Ianelli taped his “Business Matters” episode with Dr. Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of Research for the National Association of REALTORS®. The episode will air at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 10, on WFMZ, channel 69.
