Corporate Social Investment

INTRODUCTION

LegalWise's Corporate Social Investment for the 12-month period ending June

2011 focused on selecting initiatives that we are passionate about and

establishing long lasting relationships with our partners and beneficiaries.

Through pooling our resources with other partners, we have made a greater

impact in addressing national issues such as poverty, unemployment and access

to quality education.

The target set for our BBBEE scorecard in the category of Socio-Economic

Development was exceeded and significant progress was made towards

creating employment through Enterprise Development.

We told “The LegalWise Way” stories through local media, the WiseUp

(Member's newsletter) and the In Voice (internal newsletter)

HIGHLIGHTS OF CSI INITIATIVE

External Bursaries8 external bursaries were awarded to students studying law degrees during the period, including four 1st years, one 2nd year, two 3rd years and one 4th year. All students showed satisfactory results.

Patrick Kabamba, BCom Accounting at UNISA Patrick, a former security guard based at LegalWise Head Office, completed his studies and graduated with a distinction in May 2011. Patrick is now permanently employed as an Operations Analyst at Central Services.

EDUCATION

Internal Bursaries25 LegalWise staff members received bursaries to study work-related degrees/courses, including LLB, Business Administration, HR, Mediation, Sales and Marketing and Debt Counselling.

Bianca Oelofse and Elsje Van Der Mescht, both 1st year paralegal diploma students from the Pretoria branch posted above average results. Dustin Thompson from Bloemfontein completed a course in Advanced Labour Law and Tidimalo Sinugo from Debt Counselling and Madri Myburg from Pretoria obtained their Debt Counselling certificates.

Scholarships56 children of LegalWise employees received scholarships during the period. Star performers were Tryston De Kock (father Wynton De Kock from the Call Centre) who scored an average of 78% in grade 6, Khetha Mngadi (father Jabulani Nhlapho from Customer Care) who scored an average of 80% in grade 1 and Samishka Munsamy (mother Anusha Munsamy from Durban) who scored an average of 87% in grade. 5.

LegalWise Youth Literacy Programme

LegalWise, in partnership with The Nelson Mandela Foundation and Breadline Africa, embarked on a youth literacy programme in

February to convert old shipping containers into libraries for underprivileged school children around the country. LegalWise fully funded

a library at the Little Legends Foundation in Randburg and partly funded 9 others, at an underprivileged school in each province. An

estimated 9500 learners in some of the poorest communities will benefit – for the first time they will have access to a fully functioning

library. (The official launch of the libraries will take place in honour of Mandela Day during the course of July and August 2011).

“It is always a special pleasure to talk to children about my favourite pastime: reading. That joy (of reading) has been mine all my life, and

it is one I wish for all South Africans” - Nelson Mandela.

LegalWise Soweto Hope Academy

LegalWise has been in partnership with Ambassadors in Sport (AIS) for the past 5 years with the aim of “bringing hope through soccer” to

underprivileged children. There are currently 11 girls and 19 boys in the LegalWise Soweto Hope Academy, situated at the Sizwile School

for Deaf Children in Dobsonville.

The Academy children follow a curriculum with activities to assist them with school homework, tutoring for special study needs and soccer

skills. The programme includes assistance from Social Workers from the University of Johannesburg and a feeding scheme.

Grassing project

LegalWise invested in uplifting the Sizwile School for Deaf Children in Dobsonville, Soweto by developing their first sports field and

repairing their borehole, which had not been in use for 20 years. On 19th February, 400 volunteers, including LegalWise staff, AIS coaches

and Hope Academy children, staff and children from the school, community members and a celebrity or two, gathered at the school to

tackle the enormous task of planting 6000 square meters of grass, which eventually took a week to complete. A partnership was formed

with a golf course contractor to level the field, spray for bugs and fertilise the grass and a few weeks later, we were overjoyed to have a

playable sports field. LegalWise repaired an industrial lawnmower, implemented an irrigation system and empowered an ex-prisoner

with the skills to maintain the field.

LegalWise Community Match for a Day

For the 3rd year running, LegalWise was the main sponsor of the LegalWise Match for a Day event, held at the Legends Sports Arena in

Randburg in September 2010.

This is Ambassadors in Sport's premier football fundraising event, where 25 teams competed in a 5-a-side 18-hour marathon football

experience. Funds raised went towards the AIS Hope Academy programme countrywide.

LegalWise Junior Freestyle Tournament

LegalWise was the main sponsor of the LegalWise Junior Freestyle tournament for the 2nd year running. Freestyle heats took place for

young boys and girls at 5 shopping malls around Gauteng and the final was held at a spectacular event at the Wanderers Sports Club in

November 2010.

Matthew and Sonja Booth, Lee Sharpe (former Manchester United player) and many more celebrities attended this unforgettable event.

Funds were raised for the on-going work of Ambassadors in Sport in developing young talent, who would otherwise not have had the

opportunity, both on and off the sports field.

LegalWise Little Legends

In January 2011, LegalWise formed a partnership with the Little Legends Foundation, a non-

profit organisation dedicated to providing disadvantaged children with the opportunity to be

part of a football skills development programme, uniting over 250 young stars of all abilities

and cultures from areas such as Protea Glen, Sandton, Zola, Eldorado Park, Bryanston,

Katlehong and Alexandra.

The Little Legends Foundation is based at a community sports arena in Randburg, Gauteng.

The programme utilises football as a tool to mentor and nurture disadvantaged children and

incorporates feeding schemes, life skills, health and educational training and support.

The primary focus is to address the critical aspect of a lack of access to decent education. As

part of the youth literacy programme, LegalWise fully funded a containerised library for the

children of the Little Legends Foundation and invested in a bakery in the community of

Eldorado Park to provide employment for parents of some of the children.

The Real LegalWise Soccer Tournament 2010

The Real LegalWise soccer tournament, held in the community of Orlando East, Soweto has

become a much anticipated event amongst the local community and community leaders,

who have taken ownership of ensuring that it is well attended, incident free and thoroughly

enjoyed.

For the third consecutive year, the tournament was held over a period of 6 days in December

2010. The inclement weather this year did not put a damper on the spirits of the 16 teams

that participated or the absolute elation of the winners!

Community Rewards Programme

LegalWise invited our Members to nominate community development

projects in which they are personally involved to receive funding.

The Madeira Home for the Aged in Queenstown was selected to receive a

donation to purchase new bed linen for their residents and the Umtata Street

Child Programme received funding to provide pottery and leather making

skills training and materials for 12 young people to generate their own

income.

EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEERING

CANSA Shavathon 2011

LegalWise staff showed their support for those affected by cancer by taking

part in the annual CANSA Shavathon. All branches and departments

participated and raised much needed funds for the support of cancer

sufferers and their families. The funds raised by

staff was matched rand-for-rand by LegalWise.

Blanket Distribution - Youth Day 2011

LegalWise staff donated 1100 blankets to 43 community

centres catering for the needs of orphans and vulnerable

children across the country.

All branches and departments participated and some

pooled their resources and collected food and clothing to

make an even greater impact for those in need.

Bandana Day

On 12 October 2010, LegalWise staff participated in Bandana Day by

purchasing bandanas to wear to work in support of The Sunflower Fund,

which aims to raise awareness about the ongoing need for bone marrow

stem cell donors. LegalWise subsidised 50% of the cost of the bandanas on

behalf of LegalWise staff.

Payroll Giving

LegalWise staff donated a total of R 29 657 from their salaries to the Giving

Organisation, which supports mainly children's charitable organisations.

Casual Day

The LegalWise theme for national Causal Day on Friday 3rd September 2010

was “dress like your favourite diva”.

Staff purchased Casual Day stickers in support of this initiative to raise funds

for the physically and mentally disabled people of South Africa.

ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT

KZN Blind and Deaf Society Hydroponics project

The staff at the Pietermaritzburg branch invested in the construction of an additional hydroponics tunnel to expand the existing project of

the KZN Blind and Deaf Society. This will allow for higher income generation to service the operational costs of the Society for persons with

disabilities in the community of Pietermaritzburg. The PMB staff were touched by the programmes of the Society and amazed at their shift

towards becoming self sufficient. The first crop of cucumbers, planted in December 2010 and harvested in May 2011, generated an

income of R20 000.

Sizwile bakery

As part of LegalWise's commitment to uplift the Sizwile School for Deaf Children in Dobsonville, Soweto, we established a bakery at the school to create an income generation opportunity for 5 previously unemployed parents of the children at the school. The bakery supplies the school with fresh bread and rolls on a daily basis to feed the 270 school children and has gained the support of the local community. There are plans to expand operations to provide fresh bread cheaper to other schools in the area.

The “Buy More” bakery was established in the community of Eldorado

Park, through the LegalWise partnership with the Little Legends

Foundation. The bakery provides an income generation opportunity

for 5 previously unemployed parents of the children in the

Foundation.

The bakery employees have identified 6 children from the area who

are malnourished and provide

them with 3 meals a day.

The Townships Project: Micro-Franchising Project

In January 2011, LegalWise invested in a unique, long term job creation project initiated by The Townships Project (a Canadian NGO

operating in Khayelitsha, Cape Town for the past 13 years) and the University of Cape Town's Graduate School of Business. The challenge is

to build a job creation engine to reduce high rates of unemployment at the bottom of the economic pyramid through the concept of

micro-franchising. Micro-franchising is a natural development in that it systematises, brands and replicates tiny businesses, which can be

funded through microfinance and enterprise development funds – effectively permitting a person to buy a job.

For the 2nd year running, LegalWise harvested new

business ideas from over 600 entries submitted by

our Members. 10 finalists were chosen and

attended and intensive 2-day workshop at Head

Office, facilitated by Jaco van der Westhuizen (New

Business Development Manager), Tony Fornali and

a number of heads of departments.

Paulus Gertze from Steinkopf was selected as the

winner for his invention of 'Granny's Yellow Magic'

products produced from the Kraalbos, an

indigenous plant from the Namaqualand.

LegalWise sponsored the top 3 business owners to

attend a Business Management course through

Unisa and will mentor Paulus in establishing his

business.

The One Great Business Idea 2010 - Small Enterprise Development Competition

business owners within our townships and

beyond, which will be show-cased and

workshoped at a conference to be held in

Khayelitsha at the end of August 2011. A variety

of stakeholders have been engaged from the

DTI, Social Development, Community Leaders,

Franchising Specialists, Micro financers, Asset

Based Community Development Specialists, CSI

and Enterprise Development funders and

academics with a common purpose to create

jobs in our townships.
