Based on the material systems(Ga,Al)As, ((Ga,In)As GGa(As,P),and (Al,In,Ga)P we offer a wideproduct spectrum of LED - chipsin the visible (550 - 6650 nnm)and near IRED-(660 - 11060 nnm)range. With these chip tech-nologies we can cover thedemand for lower intensityranges as well as for high effi-cient chips.

One of our key competences isthe substrateless (Ga,Al)As -technology, which allows us tooffer our customers LED - chipsin the wavelength range of λP

= 635 - 9970 nnm with a highexternal quantum efficiencyand an excellent long time sta-bility. The emission wavelengthcan be chosen in 5 tto 110 nnmsteps and narrow wavelengthselections (down tto ttolerancesof ±± 33 nnm) can be offered.

Our (Ga,Al)As technology pro-vides chips without secondarypeak. Some of the designs aredeveloped for short switchingtimes ttill 55 nns.

A 100 % high speed test of theemitted spectrum is realized tofit our customers demand. Thetest includes peak, ddominantand ccentroid wwavelength, hhalfwidth ((FWHM), ccheck ffor ssec-ondary ppeaks, aand rradiantintensity // lluminous iintensity.The standard chip sizes for cur-rents up to 50 mA DC arebetween 210 µm and 365 µmsquare.

For high power applicationsOSA Opto Light GmbH devel-oped chips with large area p/n-junctions. The chip layout hasbeen designed for differentdirect currents in the rangebetween 100 mmA aand 22 AA. Thetable lists the standard chipsizes. The maximum applicablecurrent depends on the ther-mal resistance of surrounding,on material and operating con-ditions.

SMD-LEDs - visible and infrared

OSA Opto Light GmbH hasdesigned several PCB - basedSMD-LED packages for varioussizes, radiant characteristicsand chip types. This packagesfits the requirements of visibleand infrared light in the wave-length range 460 -1500 nm

All devices can be characterizedat 20 mA, 2 mA (low current)and under custom specific con-ditions. Most of them can bepackaged tape up and tapedown. The thin film technologyenables a doubled external

quantum efficiency. These visi-ble LED (red, amber, yellow,green) achieve 1-3 Candelalight intensity @ 20 mA in thepackage OLS-330. The wave-length 660, 850 and 950 nmare available in this technologytoo.

The series OCL-4xx is anAl2O3- ceramic based ceramicpackage is providing superiortemperature stability (evenunder autoclave conditions forsome chip technologies) and

excellent long time stability forUV, Blue and colour conversiontypes. The series OCL-410 is abipolar / bicolour type like red /green or red/ white colorswitchable LED. If the polarity

Colour conversion is more thanwhite or warm white light forgeneral lighting. OSA optolight develops and produces,based on different excitationLED- Chips and numerousphosphors, special LED with

high conversion rates, purecolours like green and yellowwith a brilliant colour homo-geneity and stability. Typical forthese LED are comparablewide FWHM- values in therange of 60-100 nm. OSA opto

light can furthermore combinethese phosphors to realize cus-tomized, ultra wide light sour-ces with FWHM > 300 nm orspecific spectral characteristics.

The product family OCU-400meets the requirements oflow power applications.Available wavelengths are inthe range of 350 nm … 430nm. Typical applications aredocument checking systemsand illumination systems.

Low Power

High Power up to 1.5W

The OCU-440 range has beendesigned for high powerapplications in the range upto 1.5 W electrical power dis-sipation with a very good reli-ability and life time. At pres-ent the available wave-lengths are between 365 and

430 nm. Some key applica-tions are illumination sys-tems and curing of photo-sensitive systems like pho-toresist, ink and glue.

Typical spectra of UV-LEDare characterized by a FWHbelow 15 nm. Wavelengthtolerances are ± 3 nm alsofor customized solutions.

High Power LEDs

High power packages are thenecessary bridge betweenhigh current chips and cus-tomer applications. Their maintask is to conduct the heatfrom the chip to surroundingarea in order to provide a highquality device performanceand reliability. Based on thebroad existing chip selection inthe wavelength rangebetween 365 nm 1550nm weare able to choose the rightwavelength for customersapplication. LED´s with colourconversion (OCX-440) providea wider spectral FWHM thandirect emitting chips. Besidessingle wavelength applicationthe combination of severalchips also enables the simula-tion of defined energy distribu-tions like shown in the figurebelow.

Photochemical processes likecuring requires higher powerdensities not achievable withdiscrete LED. Thus OSA optolight developed solutions inCOB - technology. The ModuleOLM-018 meets the require-

ments of medium radiant den-sities, e.g. at a wavelength of395 nm a power density of 1,5-2 W/cm² can achieved. Thismodule can combined with thecontrol unit OEM-006 to oper-ate chips in the whole wave-

length range. The reflectiveoptics for the module OLM-021 provides an full viewingangle of 18 degree.

To describe the reliability and lifetime of LEDs, it isnecessary to distinguish between two different failure modes:

the total failure the degradation as a time dependent reduction of light intensity.

For the total failures one observes two effects:

early life failures (failures visible in the function test at the application) (for OSAdiodes in the range of 10 ppm) failures during operation (for OSA diodesbelow 1 ppm).

Degradation determinated failures (intensity below50% of initial intensity) depend very strong onoperating conditions, chip material system andpackaging technology.

The mean time to failure varies between several10.000 hours for white SMD LEDs and above100.000 hours for (Ga,Al)As and (Ga,Al,In)P basedLEDs.
