Habitat para la Humanidad

Huite Colony,

Zacapa, Guatemala

March 2009

Page 2: Habitat for OLS

Guatemala is a country in Central America.

It is a beautiful country.

Page 3: Habitat for OLS

Lots of different fruits and vegetables grow in the warm climate…

Page 4: Habitat for OLS

and the cacti grow as tall as trees.

some really cool buses…

there are mountains and lakes…

Page 5: Habitat for OLS

Most of the people there are Catholic, like us…

Page 6: Habitat for OLS

But they are very poor,

and they don’t have a lot of the things that we take for granted…

Page 7: Habitat for OLS

like running water for washing clothes or dishes…

Page 8: Habitat for OLS

or a nice soccer field to play on…

Page 9: Habitat for OLS

or a strong home to protect them.

Page 10: Habitat for OLS

A lot of their homes are made of dirt mixed with straw, and then hardened in the sun…

Page 11: Habitat for OLS

but there are lots of earthquakes in Guatemala…

and sometimes the houses collapse or the walls start to crack.

Page 12: Habitat for OLS

The children go to school like you…

Page 13: Habitat for OLS

but their schools are not as well-equipped as ours…

Page 14: Habitat for OLS

and a lot of them don’t have money for uniforms.

Page 15: Habitat for OLS

Compared to them, we have so much.

Page 16: Habitat for OLS

So Habitat for Humanity decided to help the people, and build stronger houses for them.

Page 17: Habitat for OLS

We decided to help,

so we went to Guatemala too.

Page 18: Habitat for OLS

We made new friends…

Page 19: Habitat for OLS

and met some old ones from last year…

Page 20: Habitat for OLS

We got to meet some of the children…

- these are some of the children who received all the socks you collected -

Page 21: Habitat for OLS

Then we headed to our site to meet the family we would be

helping to build their home.

Page 22: Habitat for OLS

When we got there, the foundations were already laid…

Page 23: Habitat for OLS

So we gathered our tools, and set off to work.

Page 24: Habitat for OLS

The work was tough and it was very hot …

Page 25: Habitat for OLS

but some helpers came around to spray us with cold water…

Page 26: Habitat for OLS

and we got a lunch-break, and some time to rest.

Page 27: Habitat for OLS

At the end of each day we could see how much progress we’d made.

Page 28: Habitat for OLS

We worked hard…

Page 29: Habitat for OLS
Page 30: Habitat for OLS

and had some fun too!

Page 31: Habitat for OLS

The walls got higher…

Page 32: Habitat for OLS

We made more friends…

Page 33: Habitat for OLS

And soon we were ready to start putting on the roof!

Page 34: Habitat for OLS

Our family was very happy with their new home…

Page 35: Habitat for OLS

they gave us each a friendship bracelet to remember them by…

Page 36: Habitat for OLS

And we promised to come back next year!
