CREB (Cyclic AMP response element-binding protein)
CREB (Cyclic AMP response element-binding protein) functions in the control of many different cellular processes:• The survival and proliferation of β-cells is regulated by glucose and by various hormones such as
• glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)• Which appear to act synergistically to activate the CREB co-activators called TORCs • Regulating the biosynthesis of Glucagon
• Activation of neuronal gene transcription responsible for learning and memory • Expression of clock genes • Expression of brain-derived neutrophic factor (BDNF) • Fast-spiking interneurons (Module 12: Figure schizophrenia).• The CREB/TORC transcriptional duo play a critical role in energy metabolism • peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) coactivator-1 (PGC-1)
• PPAR transcription factors - function in liver cell gluconeogenesis• Transcriptional regulation aquaporin AQP2 and AQP3 - vasopressin-induced antidiuresis• Melanogenesis • NMDA receptor hypofunction in schizophrenia.
