Welcome to our guide that sets out the 500-plus courses and learning opportunities on offer from September 2021.

With Covid restrictions easing we look forward to seeing more learners able to attend our campuses across the county this year, to enjoy learning in modern, spacious classrooms and socialising in real-life settings.

There are also lots of online courses for those who prefer to study remotely and we’ll be continuing our blended learning approach which offers a combination of both online and face-to-face lessons.

Safety measures remain in place across our campuses, to make our learners feel completely safe.

As life continues to evolve post-pandemic, so do we. We have a new name “Northumberland Skills” and a new look to take us further into the 21st Century.

We want every resident of Northumberland to have the chance to develop skills to advance their careers, find work, change direction or just try their hand at something new.

With a wide variety of courses on offer, from lots of vocational skills such as construction and health and social care, to essential maths and English and digital skills, languages and creative classes – we know there’s something for everybody.

Our courses, which offer a range of qualifications and accreditations, have been designed to help people meet their goals and to enrich their lives through learning.

Your three steps to success

To help you navigate your learning options, we have created a three-step process to ensure achieving your goals is as easy and accessible as possible.


We recognise that returning to the classroom can be both an exciting and daunting prospect. This first step is about feeling supported and confident as you choose your pathway – from financing your studies to understanding exactly what and how you will learn. Our friendly team of lecturers are here to help.

Our course listings give you the dates, times and locations of our 500-plus part-time courses so you can choose the best option to suit your goals and aspirations.

Many courses are free, but for those carrying a fee, we have flexible payment options and offer financial support you may be eligible for.

Once you’ve chosen your course, get in touch to secure your place and build your qualifications, accreditations and skills. You’ll find everything you need in this section to enrol online or over the telephone, and if you have any questions or need extra support just let us know and we can help.

LOW WAGE FLEXIBILITY

Some learners are entitled to study for free as long as they meet specific criteria for fee waiver, including those:

• Studying English or maths up to Level 2, incl. GCSE and don’t currently have grades A* to C / 4-9 passes

• Undertaking a Traineeship

• Unemployed and studying up to and including Level 2 (specific eligibility criteria apply)

• Studying first full Level 2 or full Level 3 qualification (specific eligibility criteria apply)

• You may qualify for full fee remission if you are employed but earning an annual gross salary of less than £16,009.50. Eligibility criteria apply and evidence will need to be presented to enrol.

MAKING YOUR STUDIES AFFORDABLE

We constantly assess our courses to give you the best possible learning experience, and there’s a range of financial options available to support your study.

19+ LEARNER LOANS

Advanced Learner Loans are Government funded and provided to help learners with their fees. It’s easy to apply, doesn’t take your household income into account and doesn’t involve a credit check. Repayments won’t start until you are earning over £25,000 a year.

BURSARY FUNDS

This fund is used to support learners with travel expenses, childcare or additional learning support.

ARMED FORCES

If you have left the British Armed Forces within the last 10 years after completing four or more years of service, or have been medically discharged after completing basic training, you are entitled to full funding if you’re studying your first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification.

FLEXIBLE PAYMENTS

Lots of our courses are FREE and we have flexible payment plans in place if you can’t pay all your fees upfront. These apply to all courses valued at £150 or more.

SECURING YOUR PLACE ON A COURSE

First of all, you need to choose a course, if you need any help please contact your nearest campus team (details on back cover), then complete an enrolment form either online, in person or on the phone. Some courses will require an initial assessment to ensure you start your learning journey at the right place for you.

Our enrolment team will then secure your place and give you all the information you need to start your journey.

DYSLEXIA SUPPORT

We can offer advice on learning strategies, learning support sessions and a brief screening or exam assessment – speak to us at the start of your course.

BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE AND LIP READING

Our British Sign Language and lip reading courses are available across Northumberland. Both British Sign Language and lip reading courses have a small fee, but these can be waived in some circumstances subject to funding eligibility. We have signing and translating lecturers available if required.
