Summary: - Building link bait into your website content, in blogs, landing pages, etc. The point to link bait is

to provide high-quality, trusted content that is a magnet for others to link to Your website.

Body: -

If you're not one of those people who live and breathe for search engine optimisation and search engine

marketing techniques, it can be very hard to keep up with the trends and metrics. It requires near-obsessive

focus, especially when hot-button issues pop up and get a lot of attention and press. When that happens, you're

likely to start receiving e-mails from your CMO and CEO wanting to know what you are doing about this

latest trend.

Good grief!

So for those who would like a quick update on the latest SEO and SEM trends, here it is.

What's hot in SEO right now

1) Becoming a trusted contributor on social news and social content sites like StumbleUpon, Digg,

Reddit and others.

2) Building link bait into your website content, in blogs, landing pages, etc. The point to link bait is to

provide high-quality, trusted content that is a magnet for others to link to.

3) Real understanding – and leveraging – of the power of 'long tail' search string dynamics

4) Building quality personal and professional networking with online communities like Facebook,

LinkedIn, YouTube, MyBlogRoll and others. This works by helping the residual network effect.

What's hot in SEM right now?

1) Cross-channel optimisation is hotter than ever. Until now, search engine marketing pros operated in a

silo and did a good job of managing their campaigns, but the growth in social media advertising means

cross-channel reporting and optimisation is imperative.

2) Mobile marketing is finally gaining real ground. With mobile devices nearly ubiquitous and messaging

cheaper than ever, highly targeted mobile marketing is the next big trend. Planning for mobile

marketing is absolutely critical.

What's NOT hot in SEO right now?

1) Obsessive studying of the search engine optimisation index numbers and rankings (you know, what

the CEO is checking first thing in the morning?). This never works because it takes your focus away

from doing quality work.

2) Worrying yourself sick over duplicate content entry penalties. These are hardly a penalty, in fact, some

would say these are a mythic problem and worrying yourself sick is only going to cause health

problems for yourself later. Stop it.

3) Relying on site maps in XML to fix your indexing problems. Sure, it helps, but it won't do all the work

for you. You have to dig in and do the quality work that's necessary to ensure your search engine

optimisation is going well.

4) Relying on old-fashioned link trades. Honestly, if your content is good enough to link to, it will happen

eventually. Don't try to barter for link exchanges as it always looks cheesy.

What's NOT hot in SEM right now?

1) Failing to build in the infrastructure for cross-channel optimisation is a real deal-breaker with your

search engine marketing efforts.

2) Failing to account for other markets like the UK, India, Russia, and China will significantly cut into

profits and it's really not cool to cut out a large part of the buying world.

3) Failing to account for changes in Bing, whose case for search engine marketing is growing steadily.

4) Failing to build a plan for mobile search engine marketing will leave your company's products and

services in the dust very soon – this year in fact.
