Success in a Common Core Classroom

The Common Core State Standards are a topic of much discussion lately.Nevada’s implementation of the CCSS is called the Nevada Academic Content Standardsor NACS. The effects the NACS will have, both beneficial and adverse, are hotly debat-ed. But one fact is clear: the NACS are here and parents, students and teachers all overNevada are working with them every day. Nearly all Clark County schools hadimplemented the NACS as of the beginning of the 2014/2015 school year.

The implementation of the NACS has had a profound impact on the mathe-matics curriculum in the Clark County schools, from Kindergarten through High School.Classes like Algebra and Geometry have had their course curricula radically changedfrom what they had been for decades. Elementary grades have seen many math conceptsmoved from one grade to another while other math concepts have been moved to themiddle school curriculum or altogether eliminated.

While the efficacy of such changes remains to be seen, one thing is certain: students, parents and teachers alike will need to deal with a difficult transition periodover the next few years.

At Mathnasium, we use our own proprietary curriculum which focuses ondeveloping a strong mathematical foundation for Algebra and beyond. Our program supports students facing the NACS but allows us more freedom to address each child asan individual. We create a personalized learning plan for each individual student,designed to strengthen any weakness the student may have in his or her developmentalframework. We are able to use a diverse array of teaching methods to ensure each stu-dent has the opportunity to learn math in a way that makes sense to them.
