It was nearly a year aftermy daughter rst walked intoelementary school that I realizedwhat I had to do.

To provide her with everyopportunity, Id need to sidle upto a power broker. Somebodywho knew people, and how tomake things happen. The onewhod wear the key to my childsfuture as a thoracic surgeon or aworld-renowned author.

But should I trail the districtsuperintendent? A school boarddirector? The principal? Ateacher?

Think bigger, I said to myself.

Thats when I set my sights onthe ofce facing the agpole atEshleman Elementary Schoolin Millersville, the place I wassure to nd one who would helplaunch my child to greatness: thebuilding secretary.

Parents of kindergartners,if you take no other advice, heed mine: Get to know thequeenpin (usually its awoman) at your school. And doit now.

Thats because, if your schoolis fortunate, the secretary tendsmeticulously to the heart, souland database at your childshome away from home, Augustinto June.

She can recite each childsname, grade and teacher. Inan instant, shes able to pairstudents with the adults to whomthey belong. Dont be alarmedif shes memorized the makeof your vehicle, complete withlicense plate number.

Shes got consummate peopleskills. Youll notice her warmth,

and easy smile. Multitaskingcomes naturally. She knowsall of the rules; she might havewritten them.

Need a Band-Aid or helprestarting the copier? Dontknow whom to call about aclogged commode? Unsureabout absence, bus or dressregulations? Cant nd theketchup bottle or relish jar inyour refrigerator at home? Turnto the secretary for all of theabove, even the condiments.

Dr. Chris Kennedy, principalof St. Anne School, said the building that is home to 221kindergartners through eighth-

graders runs as smoothly as itdoes because of Donna Snyder.

When I told him that onemom described the schoolsadministrative assistant asawesome, he quicklyconcurred, adding, Thatmight very well be anunderstatement.

The job requires extraordinarycompassion Mrs. Snyder also

doubles as nurse at St. Annes and organizational skills,he said. And, he added, She isalmost always able to keep myfoot out of my mouth.

Mrs. Snyder embraces herrole at the school. I love it,she said. I love the kids, andthe families. Adamant aboutknowing everybody by name, she explained, You want people

to feel they can come to you.Absolutely, agreed three

Eshleman students there are318 in all who werent shyabout listing a perfect secretarysattributes.

Being nice is a must for sixth-grader Allen Yake. She wouldknow how to do her work andnot, like, fool around all thetime, the 11-year-old noted.

Eight-year-old Madison Pitz,a second-grader, regards a goodbrain as high priority. She also

believes the secretary should befunny, help kids with problemsand make sure that nobodmean comes into the ofce.

For both, building secretarLouise Aument more than meetsthe criteria.

I need to make sure that the parents trust the school, trusus with their children, said thesecretary who, like Mrs. Snyder, has managed to tap into that just-right mixture of mutual respect, kindness and professionalism toexecute her job.

Earlier this school year, fth-grader Madison Mowery wassmacked on the forehead wita soccer ball. It hurt; there weretears. Mrs. Aument came to therescue with comforting wordsand an ice pack. The 10-year-olsmiled after recalling the story:We cant live without Mrs.Aument.

School is at its best whe people care for each othe teachers, support staadministration, students and theirfamilies. And, noted EshlemaPrincipal Anne KinderwaterCarroll, Louise does suchgood job of taking care of all ous.

Thats exactly why parents likeme adore the Mrs. Snyders an

Mrs. Auments in our lives. Thewatch over our kids, tending tous in the process.

Which brings me to a thought:Have you thanked a schoolsecretary today?

    Mom of the

    Month

    By Maureen LeaderSpecial Features Writer

If I had Known How FunGrandchildren were, I wouldhave Had Them First.

Michelle Fralich has threechildren: Matt, 29; Kim, 25 and

Kelli, 23. She was a stay at homemom while her children weregrowing up. Though Fralichthoroughly enjoyed that time, it isnow that is most heavenly to her:

ow she is a grandmother.Fralich is grandmother to Jade,

6; Zach, 16 months and Matt, 10months. According to Fralichshusband, Jeff, the grandchildrenare the light of her life.

    Fralich works as a housekeeper

at the Lancaster Arts Hotel buthen she is off work, Its all

about the grandchildren. Sheknows every mom needs a breakfrom time to time and Fralich ismore than happy to provide thattime for her daughter, Kim andher husband, Jason King. BabyMatts parents are Fralichs son,Matthew Hicks and his wife,Heather.

Though Fralichs schedulechanges from week to week, her children are exible witharranging visits. Luckily, all thefamilies live within minutes fromeach other so the scheduling iseasy.

Fralich said one of the things sheloves about being a grandmother

is the extra special bond sheshares with her oldest grandchild,six-year-old, Jade. Fralich saidthat Jade is Grandmas girl.Even when she gets married, shewill still be grandmas girl.

Fralich likes that Jade canconfde in her and tell her secrets.Fralich says she tells Jade thatwhen she gets a hug from her,she gets energized. Its true!Fralich also added that she likes

being that soft place for all hergrandchildren.

Fralich says the difference withbeing a grandmother from beinga mother is that your time withthe children is all fun.

When you are a parent youhave to work to fnd time to playwith your children.

Michelle Fralich is shown with (left to right) daughter Kim, grandchildren Zach

Jade, and Matthew, and son Matthew. Missing from photo is daughter Kelli.

Mary Chairs of Lititzremembers the day like it wasyesterday. I was pulling up tomy sons school to drop him off.I noticed that the woman whogreets us at the curb was wearingan unusual coat. Very puffy. Andit was belted. When Chairs gotcloser she realized the womanwas wearing a bathrobe. WhenChairs looked around further

she saw that other teachers andkids were in similar attire. Mystomach dropped. Pajama Day.It was Pajama Day, explainedChairs. And we forgot.

Chairs, a lawyer, was to beat work that morning but beforethat she rushed to the store to

pick up a pair of pajamas for herson to change into.

Every mom has a similarstory. Forgotten lunches, gymclothes, permission slips andsigned homework can be badenough. But trying to keep ontop of classroom parties, specialholidays, Silly Sock Day, CrazyHair Day, color days, snackdays, Dress Down Days, DressUp Days adds a whole newdimension to organizing ourkids.

On top of that there are ourown volunteer schedules atschools: library, cafeteria andrecess. Plus there are meetingsand appointments with our ownoutside jobs and yeah, every oncein a while we do like to schedulelunch with a girlfriend

Its enough to make anmoms head spin. Suddenly the

kids going back to school isnot the most wonderful timeof the year, as the ofce storecommercial says. It can be thestart of a truly hectic and stressfultime far removed from the lazdays of summer.

Many moms wonder how thisall got started. Todays momsremember the only specialday in school was ones birthdawhere you were allowed to

bring in a treat. But with thisnew generation comes a wholenew world of special days.Yes, kids do have to learn to beresponsible and they do need toremember this stuff on their own.

Choosing the right toolsBy Maureen LeaderSpecial Features WriterBefore purchasing a paper

calendar or an electronic devicerst carefully plan all the thingsyou want it to do.

Do you want to track theactivities of several familymembers separately? Do you

want to include dads activities? Some paper calendars come

with colorful stickers to highlightspecial events like doctorappointments, birthday parties, parent teacher conferences, andmuch more. These will allowyou and your young childrento see what is coming up veryquickly.

Consider if you want featuresthat will allow you to plameals or childrens chores. Botelectronic devices and calendarshave these features but may bemore trouble than they are wortto some.

Some paper calendars havepockets built right in for birthda party invitations, directionschool papers or appointmencards. So all the paperwork isright there with the appointmennotation.

If using an electronic deviceuse the alarm feature to aleryou of special days. One momsets the alarm for 30 minutes before every scheduled eventI gured no matter where Iwas I could most likely get to aappointment or event within 30

minutes even if I had forgotteabout it.

If planning on using a papercalendar, think about where yowant to keep it. On your desk?In your purse? Hanging on therefrigerator? Buy the appropriatesize and hardware for where yowant to place it.

And probably mosimportantly, whether you use aelectronic device, a wall calendaror a datebookUSE IT! Make ia habit to check it every eveninfor your next days plan.

The name Green Dragonsounds like a superhero and thisplace is heroic when it comes tobusting boredom.

Whether youve got a wholeday to ll or just an hour or two, head to Ephrata and experiencethe place where you can ndalmost anything. As its taglinesays, If you cant buy it at theGreen Dragon, it chust aint fersale.

Since 1932, the farmers marketand auction has been welcomingisitors to its sprawling site, hich features more than 400

endors located outside andthroughout seven buildings.ou can nd everything here

from local produce and plants tooodworks, crafts, clothing and

more socks than you can everimagine seeing in one place.

THE DETAILSThe Green Dragon is located

at 955 N. State St., Ephrata

phone: (717) 738-1117; on theWeb: www.greendragonmarket.com. Its only open one day aweek on Fridays from 9a.m. to 9 p.m.

WHAT THE KIDS SAYMy girls loved looking at the

variety of items available for saleat the Green Dragon. Althoughits technically a free place tovisit, its more fun to actuallyspend some money here, andeach girl had no trouble doingthat.

They bought jewelry, stuffedanimals, candy and dog treats,

but once their money was gone, they also enjoyed just windowshopping.

WHAT MOM SAYSThings are reasonably priced

at the Green Dragon and its easyto nd produce or knickknacksfor just a few dollars.

If you really want to keep thisa freebie, however, you can

easily entertain your family justby walking around, looking at theunique and varied goods for saleand people watching. The lasttime we visited, we went late inthe day and found thats a greattime to catch some bargains asstandholders are eager to unloaditems that wont keep till nextweek.

    THE STEAL:ZOOAMERICA

When your kids are acting likeanimals, let them vent their excessenergy at ZooAmerica. The

North American Wildlife Parkfeatures animals indigenous tothe region, ranging from black

bears to deer and mountainlions. This year marks the 100thanniversary of a zoo in Hersheyand ZooAmerica celebrates bywelcoming new ocelots, named

Nib and Bean.A variety of educational

programs are held throughoutthe year, including Creatures ofthe Night, a ashlight-led look atthe nighttime habits of the zoosanimals.

    THE DETAILSZooAmerica is located at

    30 Park Ave., Hershey; phone:(717) 534-3900; on the Web:www.zooamerica.com. Its opendaily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. FromOct. 15 to 31, its open Fridays

    and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.and Sundays 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.Admission is $9.50 for ages 9 to54; $8 for ages 3 to 8 or 55 andolder; and free for ages 2 andunder.

WHAT THE KIDS SAYThe active otters were the

I rst noticedit with towels.Thats onething we neverthought of witha second child, new towels.

    We simplytransferred ourlittle towels to

the new babyand graduatedthe big sister to adult towels

    by force.

There was no resistance, really. A couple hey, thatsmy towel comments here andthere, but nothing classied asrebellion. I didnt think it wasa big deal. Its not a big deal tomy adult, all controlling mind.

It was a big deal to mydaughter; she just neverwanted to cause an argument. So, she watched as the duckytowel, the zoo animal towel, even the pink bunny towelmade their way into her little

    brothers possession.

One evening after her bathshe became super excited

when I put her frog towel overher head. You know the child-only towel, the one with thelittle pocket for their head this one with froggy eyes andfroggy ears.

She hopped and skippedabout the entire upstairs, ribbitting all the way. Awearing thin, faded green, too

small for her body towel mademe see that I might be forcingmy child to grow up a littlefaster than she already is.

I promised to take her outshopping and get her a set oftowels all her own. Middleground for a ve-year old (anda parent) can sometimes be the

    best ground.

    The moral of this story:

be careful not to take the kidout of the kid when a siblingarrives.

Yes, being the big helper, thebig kid, the big sister/brotheris an awesome help to mom ordad, but there can be too muchthat can happen too quicklyfor the child who still wants to

    be a child.

favorite attraction for myoungest child, who could have

stood and watched them play fora long time if my oldest hadntinsisted on seeing more of thezoo. My oldest daughter loved thecute prairie dogs who entertained

ith their silly antics. This was

the rst time we actually saw thegray wolf, whos usually hidingin his exhibit, and both girls

    ere excited to spot him.

WHAT MOM SAYSZooAmerica is a manageable

size for families to visit inabout an hour, although youcan denitely spend longer ifou linger at exhibits or watch

    feedings. Its an easy walk

throughout the zoo, with smoothalkways perfect for strollers.

There are also opportunitiesfor eating within the zoo, withplenty of seating at picnic tables, and theres a small gift shop topurchase souvenirs of your visit.

WHAT THE KIDS SAYWeve tried (and failed) to

master the corn maze manytimes, but my girls keep wantingto go back for more. Each time,we get a little further along before we cry out for help, butmy daughters are determinedto nd all the clues and nallymake it through on a future visit.

After spending quite a bit of timeamong the stalks, we exploredthe farm area, where the giantjumping pillow was a huge hitwith the girls.

WHAT MOM SAYSThe corn maze looks so

simple from the outside, butlooks are denitely deceiving.

Its nearly impossible to masteron the rst visit, but thats halfthe fun. Flashlight maze visits arefeatured on Friday and Saturdaynights, adding a new dimensionto the challenge.

Outside of the maze, myfavorite part of Cherry CrestFarm is the singing chickenshow. Where else are you goingto nd an attraction like that?

(ARA) As your kids settleinto the school year, you maynd that dealing with your childs

education can sometimes be a bitunsettling. Whether its a newear with a new teacher whose

communication style leaves youanting more or dealing with

major issues from grades tobehavior, having a solid workingrelationship with your childsschool can be as critical as theirdaily attendance.

We live in a real-time societywhere instant access to grades viathe Internet and to your children

via cell phones is the norm.Parents are continually lookingto bridge the gap between schooland home.

The reality is that teachershave so many students andso many constraints on theirtime that they simply cannotgive an adequate amount ofattention to communicating

home to the childs parents, says Dr. Mike Papadimitriou, headmaster for the Academy

of Science in Conroe, Texas. The key to success for parents,he says, centers along creatingthe appropriate and acceptablelines of communication with theschool and with their child.

The best way to keepabreast of whats going on atschool is to get involved, saysDr. Marv Abrams, an adjunct

educational professor for ArgosyUniversity, Orange County andan educational professional

gaining access to knowledgeabout how the classroom and theschool work and gaining access

to school administrators that cabe very useful for staying in tunewith your childs education.

My daughters, Stephanie andCatie wanted to see the new 3Danimation lm by UniversalPictures, Despicable Me. They

ere lucky enough to get a spurof the moment invitation and

when they got home they toldme all about it.

Steve Carell is the voiceof bad guy, Gru. Gru feels heneeds to get the upper hand onanother villain, Vector, voiceby Jason Segal. Vector has juststolen one of Egypts pyramidsand replaced it with an inatable

replica. Gru is jealous and feelshe has to come up with a devious

stunt that will put him on top. Hewants people to think of him asthe better villain.

Gru soon comes up with the perfect crime. He sets out tosteal the moon. He then startsby rst assembling his minions:small yellow gures who allwear thick goggles. Some of theminions have one eye, some havetwo. They are not scary looking, but rather very cute.

The minions quickly go towork for him. They use shrinkrays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles, but Gru discovershe has another weapon, a muchmore effective weapon that hecan use: Girl Scout cookies.Gru learns that Vector has a big obsession with a particularkind of Girl Scout cookie, thecoconutties.

Gru meets up with three GirlScout orphans: Margo (MirandaCosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier)and Agnes (Elsie Fisher). Theyall live at Miss Hatties Home forGirls and the mean Miss Hattie(Kristen Wiig) forces them tosell cookies by the truckload. But the girls never abandon theirdream of being adopted into aloving family.

Gru does end up adopting thegirls in order to have better accessto the cookies to ght Vector. But of course, predictably, hefalls in love with them and theydo become that loving family.

Stephanie and Catie thought Despicable Me was a hit. Theywere anxious to hear SteveCarell because they are fans ofhis. They thought he did a good job and liked the thick foreignsounding accent he used whendoing Grus voice. They bothalso liked the 3D effects in themovie and they believe it isworth going to the 3D version.

Thirteen-year-old Stephaniesaid the movie was cute anfunny, at the same time. Anthat it is very family orientated.Every member of the familwould like it. Adults woul

like it and little kids would likeit, too. Everyone would nsomething in it that would makethem laugh.

Eleven-year-old Catie said themovie was really funny and shethought it wasnt just for littlekids. Even grown ups woullaugh at it. It was really funnand witty. She especially likethe 3D effects. They actuallhad things coming at you.

I was curious to see whalesson or meaning the girlspicked up fromDespicable Me.Catie said what she got out of iwas Family is more importanthan trying to be the best asomething. Stephanie said shethought the main meaning of themovie was that Everyone hassoft side to them, even though othe surface it doesnt look like

they do.Catie also said that she thoughthe little orphan girls were verrealistic. They are like girls Iwould know. And they talked theway the sisters would talk to eacother. Even when they argued. Ikind of sounded like Stephanieand me. Then she added, Yoshould go see it, mom.

Despicable Me is directed bPierre Cofn and Chris Renaud

Written by Ken Daurio, anCinco Paul, based on a story bSer io Pablos.

to keeping your child out oftrouble and focused on studiesis to know your childs friends.Parents should always bemonitoring their childs friends,

says Abrams.Know who your children arehanging out with, texting, andtalking to on social networkingsites and what they are doing

ith them. Kids are attracted topeople just like them so if youfnd they hang out with a badcrowd the reality is that theyare the bad crowd and you mayneed to intervene.

Kids who stay active arekids who stay out of trouble, both Abrams and Papadimitriouagree. Whether its a schoolclub, the band or athletics, themore time kids spend in thepresence of an adult engaged insomething positive, the betteroff theyll be.

When your child faces trouble, socially or academically, stayingneutral is the key. Parents can

lose objectivity when it comesto their children. They sendtheir children to us as their mostprized possessions and can forgetthat their children, like us asadministrators, sometimes makemistakes. Nobody is perfect - thegoal should be to focus on theproblem at hand and correctingthe situation, not on identifyingblame with either the child or the

school, says Papadimitriou. While many parents considerthemselves as much a friend totheir child as a parent, settingclear boundaries for yourself isas important as getting involved.Allow your child to workthrough the issue on their own, says Abrams. When they cometo you with an issue, ask whatthey are doing about the problemand how they can resolve it.

Communicate- continued from page 11 Kids and electronic devices

(ARA) Kids are usingmore electronic devicesthroughout the school year thanever before. Theyre on cell phones to connect with friends

and family, handheld computersfor homework, downloadingmusic videos and searching thenet and carrying MP3 players forjamming to music.

But because students arealways on the go during thebusy, hectic school year, theresalways the possibility that theseelectronic devices dont get fullycharged at night with a tangle ofcords stretching from outlets all

around your house. In fact, two-thirds of parentsreport that their children use adead cell phone battery as anexcuse for not communicatingwith them, according to an Ipsospoll conducted in July on behalfof Duracell.

    You can remove that excuse

and set an example for yourchildren by keeping your owncellphones, BlackBerrys,iPods and other electroniccommunications devices fully

charged without the cords ormultiple outlets. The chargingpad is a high-tech and hassle-freecharging station that eliminatesthe mess of chords and chargesup to four electric devices atonce.

Busy school schedules can alsohave your family scrambling oneor two nights a week, preventingeveryone from taking the time tocharge their electronic devices at

home. Send your teen to schoolwith a reserve power sourcefrom in her purse or backpack.

With so many familiesmobile and on the go during theschool year, keeping schedulesorganized is less of a hassle ifeveryone has good electroniccommunication equipment.

Cell phones can also keep yourfamily safer, and 90 percent ofthe survey respondents reportedthats the reason they gave theirchildren cell phones.

Theyre great for helpingall family members check inso you know where they are especially before and afterschool.

If you do give you child a cell phone, make sure you discuss

the school rules with her. Somedistricts dont allow cell phonesto be on in the school building, while others just dont allowthem in the classroom.

Teach your child about takinresponsibility for his or herphone, following the school rules, keeping it charged and using iappropriately. Visit Duracell.com for more information.

    How do moms keep track

of all these details? While dadsmay still be debating boxers orbriefs, moms are debating paperor electronic. Some moms swearby keeping their schedule all intheir phone because it is usuallyalways with them and they canquickly refer to it. Other momssay they need the old-fashionedpaper calendar or date bookthat they can write in and seeeverything all at once.

Chairs says she is in the lattercamp. Her sons Tom, 10; Oliver,9 and Michael, 7 attend differentschools so scheduling andremembering special events canbe a challenge. She used to put allspecial days and appointments inher Blackberry but found a big, plain, white calendar worksbest for her. She sat down atthe beginning of the school year

    ith the boys school calendars

and consolidated everything. Its not pretty but it has workedso far, said Chairs. I haventmissed anything yet!

    Still, all the planning and

writing in the world doesnt prevent a mistake 100% of thetime. Moms still may have tobe able to think fast on their feetif something falls through thecracks. This happened to Chairsone morning. She and her sonrealized it was Purple Day athis school and there wasntanything purple to wear. Chairsthought for a minute and simplydressed him in a blue shirt and

red sweatpants.Just tell your teacher whenyou mix red and blue you getpurple, she told him.

Fralich is originally from Florida. I love it up here, she says.I love the seasons. Its always so hot in Florida! Her favoriteseason is autumn.

Fralich loves crafts especially embroidery and scherenschnitte paper cutting design artwork.

Fralich also loves to read, especially murder mysteries. A giftcard from Barnes and Noble is like a million dollars to me!

Fralich believes in ghosts. She believes those who have passedaway never leave you.

Fralich is the oldest of four girls.

Fralichs favorite actors are Tom Hanks and Will Smith.

She has two cats: a Persian named Oliver and a regular catnamed Ginger.

If Fralich watches TV it will be something on A & E, Discoveryor the History Channel.

    Fralichs favorite color is purple.

Fralichs husband, Jeff nominated her to be Mom of the

    Month.

Mom detailsNow, even after coming home

from her job, Fralich is readyto play. There is nothing likeworking a full day and then being

able to look forward to yourgrandchildren coming over. They enjoy going to the parktogether, doing chalk drawingson the sidewalk and doing otherfun things.

Fralich says she loved everyminute of being a stay at homemom and admits it was a real

luxury, for her. She said shedoesnt know how moms whowork outside the home today doit. So she is more than happy tohelp her own grown children. Sheexplained that her help comes inthe form of her time rather thanfrom her money. If their washerand dryer break down, I tell themto drop off their laundry and I cando it for them, rather than buyingthem a new one.

When she was raising herown family, Fralich used herexperience from her own growingup years with her mother. Fralichsaid, If you are going to ground

them (your children) for threemonths, then ground them forthe three months! My motherwould let me off after two days! She added, If you want yourchildren to succeed you have tobe consistent.

Another important lesson shetaught her children is to alwaysthink of others rst, do what yocan to help and be thoughtful. Its important to be a team player. Its not whats in it foryou, she said.

Fralich says that it is hardernow to be a mom to her childrewith them being grown up. Itstoo late, she explained. Yohave to let them live their ow

life. You never want to over stepyour boundaries. So I keep ineutral.

Fralichs philosophy on chilrearing seems to be paying off.She is reaping the benets ofwonderful relationship with hergrandchildren and is enjoyintime with her own growchildren.

My kids will tell you werethe best of friends were allclose.

Ive been doing some thinking . . . aboutour family . . . It just doesnt work when I

try to make the other person over . . . Andit doesnt work when the other person triesto make me over.

The only way we can make progress isfor each to do some self-searching and tomake changes in ones own life . . . Thismeans that A BETTER HOME BEGINSWITH ME.

So where do I begin? Oh God, I knowI must begin with you. No one else canmake my life what it should be. Forgive mysins. Change my attitudes. Transform mywhole life through Christ, my Savior. Cleanevery wrong thing out of my heart and fillit with overflowing love for You and forothers.

Please make our home better ... and letit begin with me. Amen.
