Where has the season gone?In my familys case, to Boston,

the pool, down to Stone Harbor

and back up to the Big Apple.School is only days away, buteven in the rush of summer Ivelearned some valuable lessonsalong the way, such as:

Pringles, Swedish sh andgrapes are still great beach fare.

Kids closets do, actually, come with oors. You just needa shovel and the stamina to dig

our way through dirty socks, oldshoes, fully loaded backpacks,Hasbro game pieces, old mathtests and empty water bottles.

Little Women is worth athird read. Maybe even a fourth.

The sound of Pomp andCircumstance will always be atear-jerker.

Hot dogs still taste better atthe ball park.

Dont cheat on your longtimehair stylist. Youll pay with a cut

thats an inch and a half longeron the left side than the right, andthen return to your regular stylistto repair the damage done by thatvery temporary replacement.

    Theres nothing like family.Nothing.

Park the car and walk. Youllbe amazed by what you see.

There is always shock valuein TLCs Toddlers & Tiaras.

Makeup can, literally, slideoff of your face when the heatindex pushes 100-plus degrees.

Enter a public bathroomstall without a pack of tissuesand you do so at your own risk.

    Laugh freely. It feels good.

The Most Important Work YouWill Ever Do Will Be Within TheWalls of Your Own Home. ~Harold B. Lee

This is a sign in Cathy

Kambouroglos living room,Lancaster. You may think thatas a stay at home mom to vechildren she has an incredibleamount of work to do withinthose walls. But the way, thestyle and the attitude in whichKambouroglos and her husbandTom raise their family, it allworks out.

    Kambouroglos and her

husband always wanted a largefamily. Its all they have everknown. He is one of nine andshe is one of seven siblings. My mother made it look easy, recalls Kambouroglos. I alwayswanted my dinner table full.

Two years after theKambouroglos got marriedthey started their family. BeforeKambouroglos gave birth to herrst child, she had planned to go

back to work. At that time sheworked at the caf in BordersBook Store. But as soon as shesaw her son, Nicholas face, she knew she could never leavehim.

She and her husband knewfor her to be a stay at homemom would be a huge nancialthing. Additionally, they wantedtheir children to attend private

Catholic schools, yet anothernancial sacrice. But as Kambouroglos says,

she and Tom are both on thesame page, and she appreciateshis support. Kambourogloshas always had the attitude ofthings are always going to workout. And then she said, Wouldyou do anything at all if all youlooked at was how much it wasgoing to cost? Her children, she

    said, are the most importantthing.

    Kambouroglos describes her

parenting style as strict. Sheherself was raised that way. Sheremembers as a child going outto dinner or to church with herfamily and was expected to sitstill, not to run around. At thetime she felt this was no fun butnow she appreciates how shewas raised.

With a larger family it iseasier to be strict. Because Icant do everything for all ofthem. So, even her youngest,Gabrielle, 7, has to step up.

Kambouroglos has alwaystaught her children how to dothings for themselves, but shesalso taught them how she wantsthem done. Kambouroglos willtell her children if what they did

wasnt a great effort. I wont praise them just because theyfolded the laundry. I will tellthem if I want it done a differentway. Kambouraglos says itmakes her children strongerpeople.

Sometimes it is easier to justdo it yourself, but you arentdoing your children any favorswith that.

Some may think this kind of

no nonsense parenting is a littleharsh or a little old fashioned. Butit turned out to be the best thingfor the Kambouroglos childrenas they faced one of the biggestchallenges in their young lives:two years ago their mother wasdiagnosed with breast cancer.

It was a very scary time forthe family. But as Kambouroglosremembers I wasnt afraid

that they couldnt take care ofthemselves. She knew that withall her teaching and training herchildren would be able to maketheir own lunches, do their ownlaundry. The children roseto the occasion, she recalled. They always do.

But though Kambourogloscould relax about the daily stuffof life being handled, she hadone fear that she had trouble

coming to grips with: I had thefear that I wouldnt be around

Cathy Kambouroglos with her children (l to r) Emmanuel, 13; Annaliese, 15;Gabrielle 7; Caitlyn, 12; and Nicholas, 16.

On July 6 of this year I

ofcially became the mother ofa teenager. Of course, as with allthe major events of my life, I hadto post this fact on my FaceBookPage. I was shocked at the poststhat followed:

    Good luck, Maureen itsnot easy!

Have fun!! Raising teens is anadventure in and of itself!

OMG! I wish you all the best!ick your battles carefully.

May the force be with you!

    You will survive If yourelucky

Remember: She will turn 18and then you can kick her out!

But wait a second. Yes, I haveheard about teenagers Andes, I know about the hormones,

the arguing, the clothes, themakeup, the driving, and thedating. Yeah, I know, I know.Heck, I used to BE a teenager ok, it was a very long time agobut I do remember giving mypoor mother a run for her money

I hear moms say how theymiss those baby/toddler years. How cute and sweet the littleones were oh, how they wishthey could take their teenagerand go back 10 or 15 years.

Oh really?I contend that God does

something to mothers brainsto make them forget how trulydifcult those early years were.

    Otherwise we would never have

another baby, we would warnother women from ever getting pregnant, and the human racewould end.

To all the moms of todaysteenagers: doesnt anyoneremember what parenting waslike? Anyone? When todaysteens were babies and toddlers?I say THAT was the tough time.

You say my new teenager willargue with me? Roll her eyes atme? Anyone ever have to deal

with a screaming toddler in thesupermarket?

My new teenager will need tobe driven everywhere? Her sociallife will become my life? Ok get in the car buckle up andlets go. No packing the diaper bag with sippy cups, paciersand Cheerios or wrestling withthe car seat.

My teen will be cranky andtemperamental? Oh, really?

Ever spend an afternoon with anapless toddler?

Can we talk about the pool? These days I pull up to the poolentrance, slow down, and myteenager jumps out. She puts onher own sunscreen, buys her ownlunch, and swims. Ten years agoI spent my summers sporting ahunchback as I raced after her atthe baby pool. I changed messy, dripping swim diapers in danklocker room bathrooms and

    prayed for rain.

You say teenagers want tosleep all day, that theyre lazy.My teenager certainly wasntsleeping in 13 years ago. No, shewas up at 1 a.m., 3:30 a.m., andat 5 a.m. she was up for the day

Teens are hard to discipline, you say? Take away the cellphone. Take away the car keys,no party this weekend. Done. What do you do to a three-year-old who just broke your prized

stained glass lamp? Take away a

privilege? Reason with her?I have a friend who says

parenting babies and toddlers is physically demanding and once

they become teens parenting ismore mentally exhausting.True perhaps but I believe

the rewards are greater. Sure, those sticky lollipop kisses anhearing I wuv you mummy!are precious.

But give me a teenager who istaller than you and looks you ithe eye and says with all sincerity,Mom, youre amazing.

Time spent with a teenager is

lot more intellectually rewarding, interesting and yes, more FUNthan with a kindergartener.

Using the toilet, sharinand putting away your toysare all valuable life lessons. But how about visiting a dyingrandparent? Resisting peer pressure? Sticking up for aoutcast? Studying every night tobring up your math grade?

These are the things of lifethat show the true character ofkid of a person. And perhapsthese are things that come afteryouve done your job parentinthe toddler. If your teenageris on the right track and doingood things, then yes, all thehard work with your babies anpreschoolers are paying off righnow.

    Parenting a teenager? Brin

    it!

    Parenting: Teens vs. Toddlers

(MS) For many families, no vacation iscomplete without a little sightseeing. A chance toexperience other cultures or even the uniqueness ofyour own culture and its vast history, sightseeingis often a joy for adults but can prove tiresome forkids, particularly younger children.

Sightseeing and exploring various culturalinstitutions can be a wonderful way to enrichthe lives of children and for families to createlasting memories together, said Linda Coulombe,Manager of Science Programs, National ChildrensMuseum. As our nations childrens museum,we know such excursions can sometimes beoverwhelming for kids, which is why we areoffering a few ideas for parents to consider toensure their family has meaningful and memorableexperiences.

When sightseeing with children, parentsshould consider the following tips, courtesy of theNational Childrens Museum.

    * Limit your choices. Almost every culturalinstitution has something valuable to offerchildren, including lessons in art, history, science, technology, nature, and more. While it can betempting to visit a variety of venues in one day, kids do best when they visit just one attraction attime, whenever possible.

Limit your experience to about two hours toallow children time to really absorb the contenof that particular environment, so they can learmore and better remember their experience.

    * Let kids do the planning. If your child is olenough, allow her to tell you what she wants tosee and do for a change. Kids are likely to be moreinterested, engaged, and excited if they get to help

call the shots and create their own experience.

Years ago, our family addeda beautiful owering vine to thebackyard, a wisteria. Throughthe rst couple years, thisine intertwined with a lattice

fence, producing a wonderfulprivacy fence and home to manyfeathered friends.

    As the years passed, the

isteria started to reach beyondthe fence with streamers, so wetrimmed it back to the fence.

eedless to say, the wisteria hadother ideas of reaching out intoour yard, so we now trim thestreamers twice a summer, untilit has brownish pods hanging inamongst the vines.

For a while we threw outthe trimmings, until one day Istarted to ddle with bending

and shaping them into wreaths, now these trimmings are made

    into homemade wreaths for

friends and family. If you happen to be the owner

and caretaker of a wisteria, givethis craft a try!

First item on the agenda ispruning the unwanted streamersfrom the main stalks. Hold a end portion of a streamer with onehand, gently remove the leavesin a downward motion and setthe leaess vines a side for a

wreath. The wisteria will provide thevine streamers and the summersun and warm weather will drythe wreaths. Although a fewitems will be needed in addition; pruners, wire snips, and oralwire to hold the vines in shape.

The oral wire can besubstituted by tie wraps or even pipe cleaners, these items areremoved later. Any other small

items to customize your wreathfor holidays, or fun is up to you!

A few helpful hints with thegreen streamers, vines remain

pliable for a couple days, butyou may place them in water toprolong the workable time. Finda few strong streamers and startwinding around each other, oneslightly lower then the other, thiswill give more length to workwith.

Continue until you haveenough length to make a circle,at this point you may chooseto use your ties for holding or

continue to wrap around into acircle shape.

The heart shape will need atie to bind the tops of the twovines, but the same lengthening principle applies. Each of thetwo vine streamers will bendaway from each other, creatingthe top of a heart. This is bestdone on a table top, for support.

    Bring the two vines together

at the bottom of the heart shape, then to form a sharp angle justbend each streamer back onto itsself and continue to wrap aroundthe path you came from.

Tie the remaining end piecesinto a gap or opening in thevine wreath then back throughanother gap, this will secure thestreamer.

Adding more bulk is asimple process of threading

new streamers into spaces of theshape youve just made, thenwork the wrap in a spiral motion

throughout the shape. Threadthe new sections in at different

places to give uniformity.Dont worry if the shape isa little distorted, the vines arevery forgiving while green andyou can pull or push once youhave the desired size and shape.Placing a weight, such as a picnic bench or bricks can alsohelp atten a wavy outcome.

I like to leave a loose sectionof wreath for hanging on a door,

but a piece of wire will do also.Decorating is a personal

choice, you may choose to leaveit completely natural or add littleitems. Using oral wire to attacitems, allows you to have a quickand easy change out for differentimes.

Once dried and/or decorated, these trimmings are a fabulousgift for family and friends, enjoy!

Children love to pretend, hether they are imaging them-

selves as Mommy tucking babyinto bed or Daddy as he whipsup a batch of morning pancakes.

Of all the toys and play-things we have here at the Chil-drens Corner, the children justlove the playhouse. It offershours of imaginative play, saysMary Jane Hudock, director ofthe childcare center at MoravianManor.

Indeed, a real playhouse pro-ides the perfect vehicle for pre-

tend play. Kids can pretend tobe parents or children. They canimagine that they are pioneers ina rustic log cabin or royalty liv-ing in a castle. They can ght offdragons and monsters, act out afairy tale like Snow White and

the Seven Dwarfs or argue withtheir spouse over the care ofa dozen hungry kids. From reallife to not-so-real life, a play-house is a wonderful tool for theimagination.

Pretend play in a playhouse isa great way to learn how to inter-act with tools, food, appliancesand other pretend toys. Whenkids play pretend together theycan learn and better develop theirsocial skills. They can also havea great time playing with theirparents, sometimes even revers-ing roles, when Mom plays thechild and the child is the parent.

A playhouse can teach sim-ple things like sharing and takingturns, says Hudock, adding thata playhouse can also teach morecomplex things like abstractthinking when kids pretend sim-ple objects are something else.

    Its interesting to watch how

boys and girls play differently inthe same playhouse. Often, theboys will imagine that the play-house is a fort and they are ght-ing off the enemy. Girls tend topretend they are princesses in acastle or a loving mother withbabies to care for.

Even so, a playhouse can of-fer boys and girls a chance toimagine their roles as grownups.

    Ask almost any child what

they wish they had, and even to-day, kids long for a playhouse. Itcan be outside in the backyard,or in the nished basement.

It can even be a little cornerof the playroom, with a kitchen, table and chairs and other acces-sories. It becomes a secret littleworld where fantasies cometrue.

A playhouse is really a scaleddown version of a real house,

    and can teach responsibility,adds Hudock.

A playhouse can be an indooror an outdoor playhouse. The ad-vantage of an outdoor playhouseis that it it becomes a retreat forkids in a natural environment.Choose a at area of the yard, where it is nice and shady. Makesure it is close enough for you to

If the late summer doldrumshave set in at your house, check

out these ideas to banish thephrase, Hey Mom, Im boredfrom your childs vocabulary.

    THE FREEBIE: HAYLOFTCANDLES AND PETTINGZOO

spend the money or take a longdrive, check out the next bestthing. In Leola, your kids canget up close and personal witha variety of animals all for freeat Hayloft Candles and PettingZoo. The place features animalsranging from goats to severaltypes of birds, donkeys, a pig, deer, rabbits and peacocks. Alarge pond, gazebo and walkingpath make it a picturesque spotto visit on a warm summer day.Inside, you can watch candles

    Wednesday and Saturday 9 a.m.to 7 p.m.; Thursday and Friday 9a.m. to 8 p.m.

    WHAT THE KIDS SAY

My girls love animals andwere especially drawn to theactive goats who entertainedus with their antics. Both girlsenjoyed feeding the animalsand liked seeing the unique binturong, which theyd neverseen before. A talking parrot hadthem laughing out loud.

WHAT MOM SAYSEven though its called a

petting zoo, you dont havemuch opportunity to actuallytouch the animals and signs warnthat the animals may bite. Still, the place is small enough to feellike you can interact with yournew furry friends even though afence separates them from you.Bring a few quarters to buy foodto feed the animals.

THE STEAL: FISHINGThink of a good old-fashioned

summer activity and shingmight come to mind. In ourfamily, its a favorite activity ofour youngest child especially, although we all enjoy it. InPennsylvania, children under 16do not need a license to sh, soits technically a free activity, butyou will have some expense in

purchasing a rod and accessoriesplus bait, unless you want to digup your own. Lancaster Countyis ripe with places to cast yourline, from rivers and ponds to

small creeks. Theres sure to aplace near where you live.

    THE DETAILSFor shing regulations and

details, including bodies ofwater to check out, visit www.sh.state.pa.us/.

WHAT THE KIDS SAYGiven the choice, my 9-year-

old would sh every day if welet her. She loves the sport and, thanks to the many stocked lakesand ponds in the area, almostalways catches something. Herfavorite spot is Speedwell ForgeLake in Lititz, where you can shfrom the shore, or if you have aboat, take to the water.

WHAT MOM SAYSExcept for baiting the hooks

and actually touching the sh, Ilove shing, too. Its a relaxingway to spend time as a familyand enjoy the beauty of LancasterCounty. Ive had some excellentconversations with my daughterswhile were quietly waitingfor the sh to bite. Getting my preteen to open up and talk tome? Thats priceless.

    THE SPLURGE:ADVENTURE SPORTS INHERSHEY

If your children are drivingyou crazy, take them toAdventure Sports in Hersheyand let them burn off that excessenergy. Whether its drivinggo-karts, playing outdoor lasertag or hitting each other viabumper boats, theres somethingfor everyone here. If thats not

enough, Adventure Sports alsofeatures batting cages, miniaturegolf, a driving range and anarcade. And you can top off allthe fun with a sweet treat fromtheir ice cream parlor.

    THE DETAILSAdventure Sports is located

at 3010 Elizabethtown Road(Route 743) in Hershey; phone:533-7479; on the Web: www.adventurehershey.com. Its open

So, I packedmy daughter offto theater campthis summer. Formy almost 5-year-old the campwas only a half-day experience,Monday through

Friday for acouple weeks. For me, it was a chance to freeup some mornings to do thingslike write this column.

I was hoping the campwould be a chance for herto meet some new people (astrange feeling for even someadults) before she is thrust intothe world of kindergarten. And,

hopefully it would become acreative outlet for a child intransition.

The effects of having a newchild in the house are startingto change our family dynamic.Teagan is now 7-months-oldand Halli has moved away fromthe novelty of a baby brother tothe realization that all mommyand daddys attention is notfocused on her. Dont get mewrong, she is still a good girl, but there are things coming outof her that she cant explain.

Why did you do that, Iask.

I dont know, she repliesbreaking into tears.

    I believe her. Theres some

kind of reactionary devicetriggering and forcing herto act out to get attention. Iempathize, but I still dontapprove. There are also somethings she knows exactly whyshe did them. Sometimes thatexplanation is too cute.

One evening, when thingswere uncomfortably quiet asshe played in her room my

wife discovered Halli drew thecutest, square-headed, happylittle monster on the carpet near

her bed. She never drew onanything like that before. Evenwhen a toddler! When my wifeasked why I wanted pictureson my oor. It will look nice,Halli said excitedly.

That was one of those timesas a parent when you turnaround quickly, hiding thesmile and impending laughter.

Thats the creative drive Ihope to ll with theater camp. However, camp has led toanother regression in behavior, crying when daddy leaves.

At her culminating show, she was the only 4-year old whocouldnt complete Twinkle,Twinkle Little Star and exitedstage left in tears of stage fright.

Shes such a little actress athome! Maybe its too much toofast; I just wanted to get herinto different surroundings andsituations before Kindergarten. She enjoys the camp. Shealways has a smile on her facewhen I pick her up. So, maybeits all good.

    WHAT THE KIDS SAY

Weve driven by AdventureSports many times on our wayto Hersheypark and my children

have wanted to go for a longtime. The bumper boats were thefrst attraction they chose and

both girls had a blast shootingwater guns at each other andchasing each other throughoutthe pool in their boats. Next wegot behind the wheel of the go-karts and raced around the track

before heading inside to playa few arcade games and enjoy

some ice cream. Both girls are

begging to go back to experience

outdoor laser tag and try thebumper boats again.

    WHAT MOM SAYS

Theres enough to do atAdventure Sports to keep eventhe most active kids occupiedfor hours. I had to drive the go-kart with my youngest, becauseshes too young to drive, and I

was a little intimidated, but we

had a great time. It was easy tocontrol the car but still race fasenough to get the adrenaline

pumping. We chose the picktwo attractions pricing option,so we spent $13.50 per child. If youre looking for a place tothrow a party, Adventure Sportsoffers party packages starting a$65 for up to 10 guests.

the Birds exhibit that features29 unique birdhouses that werecreated for the contest. While

inners in the various categoriesere selected in April, guests

are invited to vote for thePeoples Choice award throughSeptember 26.

Another garden area thatspopular with both children andtheir parents is the herb garden,

hich features mostly culinaryherbs all of which have ID tags.Parents like it since they can getideas for an herb garden of theirown, and children like to explore

and touch the herbs. Its alsoeducational since kids can makethe connection to what they maysee in the store to what they seeon their plate at home, Harris

    says.

    Previous riddle answer:

    * Focus on a specic area ofinterest. Before heading to yourdestination, choose a specifcsubject on which to focus duringour visit. For example, if you are

headed to the Museum of NaturalHistory, you may choose to focuson learning about dinosaurs.Take some time to read up onthe subject with your child inthe days leading up to your visit, and discuss it on your way to themuseum. Then head straight toDinosaur Hall. Focusing on onearea gets children excited about

hat they will see and enhanceshat they already know.

    * Use past experiences toconnect your child to the site.Building on past experienceis critical to a childs learning. To understand a new concept

our child might encounter ata museum or monument, tryto connect it to a concept thathe is already familiar with. Forexample, if you know you willlook at a sculpture that depictsa person throwing a ball, bringour childs own ball with you

and encourage him to use it in asimilar way.

    * Create your own specialactivity. Allow your child to beactively involved in the learning

process during your visit. Bringa notebook or sketchbook and

crayons, and encourage yourchild to count objects, recordwhat he liked most about hisfavorite exhibits, or sketch hisown version of what he seesduring your visit. Or beforeyou head to the museum, takean online tour and create yourown Treasure Hunt or otherhands-on activity where kidshave an opportunity to see, touch, taste, and listen, or act outtheir impressions of what theyexperience.

    * Be an engaged andinterested parent. Make it clearthat your visit is a treat--aspecial time for you and yourchild to share together. Yourlevel of enthusiasm, interest, andexcitement is contagious. Bea learner along with your child

and share the experience thatlearning is fun!

Scheduled to open in theWashington, DC region in 2013,the National Childrens Museum(NCM) will be a world-classcultural and educational centerdedicated to engaging childrenand empowering them to make adifference.
