Summer is sublime when
its served with limesIm keeping it light thisonth with recipes that will
elp to take you beyond LaborDay. Their common ingredient?Limes, or some variationthereof.
I routinely toss sliced orangesand limes into lemonade. Andime wedges make great drink,
salad and dessert garnishes. But I have a new respect for thecitrus fruit that is showing up in
ore and more of my favorite
summertime dishes. Before I get to them, put
this on your shopping list:ewmans Own Lite Lime
Vinaigrette. Pal Lena Baileytopped a cilantro-laced springsalad with this at our May bookclub gathering.
But be warned: trying to ndthis dressing at the grocerystore can become a searcheading nowhere. (Thats a not-
so-subtle-hint to supermarketstockers.) I went to three storesand had no luck. Lena hassince told me its a hit-or-misstem. So when you see it, sheecommends picking up more
than one bottle which she didfor both of us at the end of June.
***Now to the recipes.
I made the following blackbean salad for a Fathers Daygathering in Lititz. It was sucha hit I decided to do it again, ess than a week later, for my
book club friends in ManorTownship. Its a great salad, butcan also be used as a dip servedwith tortilla chips.
If youre not a cilantro fansubstitute at-leaf parsley. But dont mess with the onengredient that makes the salad
emorable: fresh lime juice!
BLACK BEAN SALADWITH CORN, RED
PEPPERS, AVOCADO& CILANTRO-LIME
VINAIGRETTE2 (15-ounce) cans black beans,
rinsed and drained3 ears freshly cooked corn,
kernels cut off the cob(frozen corn thats beencooked will also do)
2 red bell peppers, diced2 cloves garlic, minced2 tablespoons minced shallots,
(from one medium shallot)2 teaspoons salt teaspoon cayenne pepper2 tablespoons sugar9 tablespoons extra virgin
olive oil1 teaspoon lime zest
(be sure to zest limes beforejuicing them)
6 tablespoons fresh lime juice cup chopped fresh cilantro,
plus more for garnish2 Hass avocados, chopped
Combine all ingredientsexcept for avocados in a largebowl and mix well. Coverand chill for a few hours orovernight. Just before servingadd avocados and mix gently, being careful not to mashavocados. Garnish with morechopped cilantro. Serve at roomtemperature, and if desired, on abed of lettuce, sliced cucumbersor zucchini. Serves 6-8.
(onceuponachef.com)
The next two recipes are frommy cant-do-without-it kitchenresource: Better Homes andGardens New Cook Book(this version was published in1981). The rst is a Lime FruitSalad that shows up, with sometweaks, in many-a-church andcommunity cookbook. Ivesubstituted crushed pineapplefor the fruit cocktail and I oftenomit the walnuts.
The second is an ice-cream
dessert that Ive not yet tried, but its on my to-make list.Because its from BHG, I feelcondent passing it alongwithout rst running it throughmy kitchen.
LIME FRUIT SALAD1 (8-ounce) can fruit cocktail cup water1 (3-ounce) package lime-
avored gelatin1 (3-ounce) package cream
cheese, cubed and softened cup whipping cream cup chopped walnuts
Drain fruit cocktail, reservingsyrup. In a saucepan, combinereserved fruit syrup, waterand lime gelatin. Heat, stirringfrequently, till gelatin isdissolved. Gradually add the
hot gelatin mixture to creamcheese and beat on low do itcarefully so your kitchen wallsdont take on a pale green hue till smooth.
Chill until partially set (theconsistency of unbeaten eggwhites). Beat whipping creamtill soft peaks form. Folddrained fruit cocktail, nuts(optional) and whipped creaminto gelatin mixture. Pour intoa 3-cup mold. Chill till rm.Makes 6 servings.
LIME PARFAIT PIE1 (3-ounce) package lime-
avored gelatin cup boiling water teaspoon nely shredded
lime peel cup lime juice1 cup whipping cream1 pint vanilla ice cream1 (9-inch) baked pie crust
In a large bowl, dissolvegelatin in boiling water. Stir inlime peel and lime juice. Addice cream, by spoonfuls, stirring
till melted. Chill till partiallyset (the consistency of unbeatenegg whites). Whip the 1 cup
whipping cream; fold into limemixture.
Chill till mixture moundswhen spooned. Turn into piecrust. Chill several hours orovernight until set. To serve, top with unsweetened whippedcream and maraschino cherries.Cover and chill to store.
Serves 8.

A visit to a zoo is a great familyouting. A zoo in the heart of a naturepreserve adds a bit more fun andnterest. Lehigh Valley Zoo is achildrens zoo located on 29-acresn the midst of the 1,100-acreTrexler Nature Preserve. Its location 13 miles from the heart of
downtown Allentown makes it ashort jaunt from our area. Its managed by the non-prot
Lehigh Valley Zoological Societyand is accredited by the Associationof Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
Although the non-prot wasestablished in 2004, the zoo andthe game preserve are part of theareas heritage. It traces its rootsto the 1900s when General HarryC. Trexler, who is credited withcontributing to the growth andquality of life in Allentown and thesurrounding area, began purchasingfarms to create a game preserve toprotect bison, elk, and white-taileddeer. The preserve was transferredto Lehigh County in Trexlers willn 1933. The county continues toanage the nature preserve, while
the zoological society manages thezoo and the bison and elk herd.
The zoo is home to more than275 animals representing 70 speciesfrom African penguins to zebra. Its animal collection includes 16
species classied as endangered, threatened, or species of concernincluding red kangaroo, snowy owl,
plains zebra, West African blackcrowned crane, trumpeter swan andlaughing kookaburra.
Several new exhibits haveopened since 2009 including a
penguin pavilion, bobcat exhibit,Mexican gray wolf exhibit, and thisyears farm in the zoo, which is
located next to the playground.Children really have fun withthe farm, says Shirley Kline, director of development andmarketing. Farm animals aresomething theyve read about, andmany havent had the opportunity toexperience. Theres also a really funcow simulator where they can learnabout and try their hand at milkinga cow,
The zoo also offers Explore& Snore programs, fun-lledovernight excursions or half-nightevening outings, to explore the zooat night and learn about nocturnalanimals as well as engage in somehands-on activities. The kids reallylove that program and our summercamps, Shirley says. Theres also aspecial birthday party package.
The zoo offers a number ofspecial activities including various
animal encounters and paddleboatand wagon rides.National Milk Chocolate Day
will be celebrated July 28, and
samples of chocolate fondue andchocolate milk from a local dairywill be among the offerings. AZoomazing Scavenger Hunt is ontap for Aug. 11. For the adults, thereare several signature events suchas Music at the Zoo, an after-hourssummertime concert series.
Coupling a trip to the zoo witha hike on the nature preserves
trails is a great family trip, saysRick Molchany, Lehigh Valley Zoopresident and CEO. He said thereare 22 miles of hiking trails, 2.5miles of mountain biking trails, and18 miles of horseback riding trailsin the nature preserve as well as ashing area for children that mayalso be used by disabled adults.
Being in the center of thenature preserve creates a specialatmosphere here. The 1 -miledrive through the preserve to reachthe zoo is very pretty, and when youleave the zoo, you may see elk and
bison, Shirley says. She adds thatthe palomino herd that had been onthe preserve for a number of years isnow part of an exhibit in the zoo.
The drive out of the zoo throughthe preserve is also very scenic theres a ford through the JordanCreek to drive through. The area
by the ford is really popular. Kidscan get out and play in the waterthere, and its a great place for a
picnic. We often have families visitthe zoo and bring a picnic lunchto enjoy somewhere in the nature
preserve, she says. The Lehigh Valley Zoo is open
year-round. In-season operatinghours (April 1 to October 31) are 10a.m. to 4 p.m. daily; caf and storehours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
Admission is $10.75 for adults ages12 to 64; $9.75 for seniors age 65+;and $8.75 for children ages 2 to 11.

Summer is the time wheneveryone packs up their kidsand takes them on adventures. But the fun can be ruined if
otion sickness is along forthe ride.
Long car rides, amusementparks and boats can meandisaster for a child prone to
otion sickness. But that does
ot mean you are condemnedto a lifetime of vacations atome. Typically, with a few
adjustments, you can geteveryone on the road andfeeling good.
Motion sickness is a feelingof nausea and dizzinessthat can be accompanied bysweating, pallor, belching, ncreased salivation and, rarely
(only 3 percent of the time),vomiting. It is caused when
the visual input from the eyesconicts with the cerebralinput from the vestibularsystem. It is more common infemales, children under age 2are resistant, and the incidencepeaks at age 12. Migrainesufferers are more susceptible.
Like most things in life, prevention is the key. Once
you feel the symptoms, theonly thing that helps is to ndstable ground and stay thereuntil they resolve.
Two natural preventionsthat have some evidence tosupport their efcacy areginger and sea bands. Gingeris a long-relied-upon remedythat prevents motion sickness. It comes in chewable tablets.
It works by decreasing gastricmotility and eliminating
nausea feelings. Sea bandsuse acupressure points on thewrists to eliminate nausea.Ginger tablets are a chokinghazard and should not begiven to small children, butother than that, these remediesare safe.
Antihistamine drugs such asDramamine and Bonine work
by sedating the vestibularsystem so it does not sendconicting input to the brainand thus preventing motionsickness onset. There aremany different brands/types,and you should consult yourhealth care provider beforeusing them to be sure they aresafe for your child. They carrya side effect of drowsiness;
however, the newerformulations have less of this
side effect.Scopolamine patches are
transdermal patches, whichgo behind the ear and providerelief from motion sickness forthree days straight. They arenot approved under the age of12 and require a prescription. They work well, but can causeblurred vision and dry mouth.
Positional adjustments havean effect on motion sickness. It is best to focus on a xedobject, like a land mass froma boat or out the window ofa car. Reading or watchingvideos only contributes tothe overstimulation of thevestibular system and makesit worse. Motion sicknessdoes not occur during self-
generated movements, so ifpossible, allowing the aficted
to control the vehicle willmake it better. However, thisis not a reason to let your10-year-old drive!
Studies in naval pilots showthat motion sickness improveswith repeated exposure;however, that can be a hardthing to convince a child whois feeling terrible. Most will
want to avoid further rollercoaster, sailboat or bumpy carrides in the future. But becausethey usually lead to fun, practicing the above tips cankeep them engaged.
Pia Fenimore, M.D.,of Lancaster PediatricAssociates, is a contributorto the LancMoms.com Ask an

Motion sickness
Some parents cringe at the mereention of dining out with their
children, envisioning 90 minutesof crying, taunting and tantrums.
While some cultures place greatsignicance on dining out as afamily, North Americans seem lessnclined to do so unless it is at afamily-friendly (not food-friendly)chain or fast food establishment.
However, dining out withyoung children doesnt have to bea debacle. Employ a few of thefollowing tips, and your next nighton the town with the youngsters intow might just prove to be a nice
family experience.
Get munchies.A hungry childis often a cranky child. Ask if bread, crackers or chips can be placed onthe table early on so that the kids
have something to snack on anddistract them from hunger pangs.
Request a table near thebathroom. While looking at therestroom doors may not makefor the most inviting ambiance, itdoes reduce the hassle of snakingthrough tables and rows with a childwho needs to use the restroom.
Order for the table. Givingkids a choice may waste time and
lead to arguments. Order a few
items that everyone can share,
increasing the likelihood that your
child will nd something to eat.
Stick with recognizable foods.
Now is not the time to ask juniorto delve into seafood salad or
osso bucco. Save taste-testing for
another time when theres nobody
else around to hear your childs
protestations.
Make dessert a reward not an
expectation. If children behave to
your liking, dessert can be a reward.
It will reinforce good behavior the
next time you decide to dine out.
Dine out without drama

~ Mom details ~
The active lives of childrenoften lead to a few bumps and
bruises along the way. While a fewbandages and antiseptic creams arepar for the course when caring fora child, parents worry about moresignicant injuries, includingeye injuries.
Each year, more than 2.5 millioneye injuries occur, and 50,000people permanently lose part or allof their vision. Nearly half (47.6percent) of all reported eye injuriesoccur in people between the agesof 18 and 45. Children ages 0 to 18experience roughly 25 percent ofthose injuries.
Projectiles and ying debrisaccount for the vast majority ofeye injuries across all age groups.Among children, some of the
ore common injuries occur whenchildren are participating in varioussports, including:
hockey
archery darts BB guns
bicycling sports that involve rackets
baseball boxing basketballToys, ngernails and even
chemicals are responsible forsome eye injuries in children. It isimportant to note that 90 percentof all eye injuries can be preventedby using protective eyewear. Somesports organizations mandate thatchildren use protective eyewear.Even if it isnt mandatory, parentsshould urge children to wearsafety goggles.
CommonEyEInjurIEs
Certain injuries to the eye aremore common than others. Here arejust a few that can occur.
Chemical burns: This is whena child gets any type of chemicalinto the eye. Chemicals may behousehold cleaning objects. These
injuries require immediate medicalattention because they can causepermanent vision loss.
Bruising: Black eyes orecchymosis occurs from some sort
of trauma to the eye. Eyelid lacerations: This is a cut
on the eyelid. An eyelid lacerationmay be paired with bruising or evencorneal abrasion, depending onwhat struck the eye.
. Burns: Sunburn not onlyoccurs to the skin but can affect theeyes, too. It is important to wearUV-protective sunglasses outside.
PrEvEntEyEInjurIEs
Eye injuries are largelypreventable. Wearing eyewearduring sports is essential. Frequentwashing of hands and avoidingtouching the eyes can prevent thetransfer of debris from ngers to theeye. All chemical products shouldbe kept out of reach. If children usecosmetic products, they should notbe applied around the eye.
Knowing the risks to the eye and
how to prevent injury can help wardoff serious injuries.

was to serve up information ina more digestible fashion,
making it easier for those who

read the newest content, rather
than search for it.
Those who routinely visit
LancMoms can scroll down
the page to nd older news.
LancSavers, which offers

each one coming with a

be used as a spot for businesses

Kindergarten used to be a
time when kids grabbed a nap inbetween ngerpainting and playing
outside, but todays coursework
s much more rigorous and
kindergarteners are now introduced
to concepts that were once taught
n later years of elementary school.
Preparing children who have never
attended school for their rst day
should take a little time prior to the
start of school.
SigningupforSchool
Each school district has its own
equirements to begin kindergarten.
Parents should familiarize
themselves with their school
district as soon as possible. One of
the primary requirements is age.
Children generally have to meet a
certain age requirement (usually
age 5). Their birthdays have to take
place prior to or by a cut-off date.
Public schools will also require
proof of residence. They often
equire utility bills with the
students address on them. Private
schools typically have more lenient
esidence requirements.
Most entering students will need
to have received all the necessary
vaccinations. Students without allmmunizations will need to do so
before enrolling.
gettingprepared
Some children are anxious tobe big kids and begin school.
Others may be nervous about
whats in store. The best way to
prepare children is to think about
enrolling them in some sort of social
program. Preschool is the avenue
many parents choose, but simply
spending time together with other
kids in a structured social setting
is enough for many kids to getacclimated.
Talking about what to expect
at school can also ease jitters.
Parents can establish a school-
like structure at home to illustrate
their points. Have set times for
meals and snacks, require small
chores be done on time and set
additional rules and limits. Bed
time and wake times should be the
same each day as well. Children
who are unaccustomed to having
structure may nd the rigors of the
classroom scary.
Parents should inquire about
touring the school to help calm kids
nerves. This way children will see
exactly what environment they will
be working in each day.
honingSkillSChildren will partake in a variety
of activities during kindergarten.
Theyll begin learning to write
and perform other activities thatrequire ne motor skills. Parents
can introduce their children to
pencils, crayons, markers, and
safety scissors so they can learn the
proper grip and how to maneuver
these tools.
Its also never too early to read
with children. Studies indicate
that children who frequently readwith their parents or others tend to
have greater success in school. The
National Education Association
says that children who were read to
frequently are more likely to:
count to 20, or higher than
those who were not
write their own names
read or pretend to read
The Educational Testing Services
reports that students who do more
reading at home are better readers
and have higher math scores.
Kindergarten is a childs
initial foray into the world of
academia. Much has changed in
the kindergarten curriculum, and
parents can expect their kids to belearning much more in kindergarten
than the once did.

The opportunity to spend free timeexperiencing other cultures or visitingfaraway lands appeals to manypeoples inquisitive and adventurous
atures, and its no wonder manywant to travel the world.
Yet traveling as a parent of youngchildren comes with its own set ofconcerns; and parents love of travels often put to the test when thekids are in tow. But traveling withkids doesnt have to be a logisticalightmare. Here are a few travel tips for
parents about to go on vacation with
their young ones. Check your ight status.
Flights are commonly rescheduled, which can be inconvenient for adulttravelers who dont have a coupleof kids tagging along. For parents, though, extra time waiting at theairport with kids can be stressfuland tough to handle. Before leavingthe house, check your ight statusto ensure you wont be spending
extra time sitting and waiting at theairport and looking for things toquell your childs boredom.
When booking the ight, signup for ight updates that are sentdirectly to your mobile phone. These will keep you posted andsave you the hassle of going onlineand checking your ight statusevery few hours.
Check in ahead of time. Manyairlines allow passengers to checkin ahead of time, typically within 24to 36 hours of the ights scheduleddeparture. When kids are comingalong, the less time you spend inline at the airport the better, andchecking in ahead of time can saveyou from waiting in long check-inlines.
Conrm what youre allowedto bring on board. Parents ofvery young children, be it infantsor toddlers, should conrm whattheyre allowed to pack and bringon board in advance of their ight.Sterilized water, for instance, mightbe acceptable to bring on board, but the airline might insist that it
be stored in a baby bottle. Contactthe airline a few days before you
plan to pack to learn the companysguidelines. Different airlines mighthave slightly different guidelines.
Explore the airport.Depending on if you will be ying adomestic or international ight, youmight be spending a considerableamount of time waiting to board oreven dealing with a layover. Thesewaiting periods and layovers areboring for adults and kids alike, souse the airport to your advantageand go exploring. Kids are oftenfascinated by airplanes, so take
them to gates or terminals whereights are about to depart.
Separate kids on the plane. If you have two or more childrenalong, avoid seating them nextto one another on the plane. Thiscan lead to spats that will almostcertainly upset fellow passengers.Let Mom sit with one child andDad with another, and give kids thewindow seat so they can entertain
themselves by looking out thewindow when the plane is in ight.
Bring your ownentertainment. Kids are going toget bored on the ight, so be surethey have plenty to do while in theair. Bring along a tablet with videocapability (and with earbuds) tokeep kids occupied with a movie
or television show. This will helpreduce the restlessness and boredom
theyre likely to feel in the air. Orbuy kids a new book or magazine atthe airport so they have somethingnew to occupy their time until theplane lands.
Traveling with children isseldom easy. But a few tricks of
the trade can make the trip go moresmoothly.
Traveling is easy even with kids

Its summer and my life is
spinning out of control. Asa Work-At-Home-Mom, mywriting business is usuallypretty slow between Augustand December but I get hitwith deadlines starting in earlyFebruary.
Baseball season is the busiest.I love watching my son playball, but Ive noticed over thepast few years that advancingup in Little League becomes
ore and more demanding forparents from practices, togames, to more practices, totournaments, to hoagie sales, topicture night. In other words,I sell my soul to the sport foreight plus weeks. Sigh.
I always thought my lifewould seamlessly ow fromone activity to another whenI started working at home.
ow, I laugh at the thought.
Ive become the mistress ofultitasking. On some of my
workdays, I run upstairs many
times a day to change loads ofsummer laundry.
Also, I think about myassignments when Im cooking
dinner and worry about eatingmore than hot dogs on gamenights when Im working. I goto sleep thinking about what Ineed to get done the next day towaking up feeling like I haventslept at all.
So now, I fantasize aboutgetting a part-time job outsidethe home. Then, I could goseamlessly from one thingto another without so much
multitasking. But one of mymentors reminded me a fewmonths ago that I would stillneed to come home to laundryandhomeworkandrunning thekids to games andworryingabout dinner. Theres no escape.
Busyness is the lay of the landuntil my kids move out of thehouse when theyre adults, I tellmyself. Until another mentorsays it doesnt slow down
after the birds y the coop. Ididnt want to hear that Implanning on a months vacation
catching up on all my reading, writing, and art work within veminutes after my youngest startsout on his own.
What keeps me going on thebusiest of days is my fantasyof sitting on Bethany Beach,Delaware for a month with astack of books, my beach chair, and sunglasses, reading until myeyes bug out or I burn to a crisp.
But its the constant to-dothis time of the year, that reallywinds me up into a major ballof stress. Maybe its because Iwant to be outside playing in
my garden. Maybe because itsmy busy season and Im in mystride where I want to workuntil my brain turns to mush.
Or maybe its because I getinto a comfortable routinebefore baseball season startsthat I feel totally batty by theintensity of the spring and thenthe summer season.
Whatever the reason, thereality is that this is my life for
this season and somehow Illsurvive it even if I manage toget some more gray hairs in the
rocess.
Most people haveexperienced the shriek of asmoke alarm when cookinga meal or stepping out of asteamy shower, when thereis no hazard present. Theinstant reaction is to nd away to silence the alarm.
Since many of these day-to-day issues are difcultto avoid, the best solution
to virtually eliminate thenuisance and keep youralarm intact is to choosea smart smoke alarm thathas a microprocessorthat changes sensitivityaccording to the nuisancesource; one that is virtuallyimmune to elements such asdust and steam.
Visit your neighborhoodhardward or home
improvement store to seewhats now available.
Families should take thesesteps to ensure re safety intheir homes:
Smoke alarms should beinstalled in every bedroom, outside each separatesleeping area and on every
level of the home, includingthe basement.
Smoke alarms are animportant part of a home reescape plan, but rememberthey are only one step.
Keep your family preparedfor a re emergencyby creating a plan and

My son Michael observedecently how a summer day goesuch faster than a school day. That got me thinking about
the shorter life span of otherthings around our house during thesummer. The list includes the pencilpoints, ice cream cones, brownies, boxes of Maggies favorite cereal, and various mice, chipmunks, birds
or other poor rodents that violateour cat Haileys hunting perimeteraround our home.
Hailey brought a rabbit biggerthan herself on the deck andproceeded to gnaw on it as wewatched in horror through thesliding glass doors. But the awfulscene actually turned into a positiven that it prompted a discussion ofour own limited shelf life and thenevitability of death.
The conversation followedMichaels observation after catching
a glowing sunny whod swallowedhis hook while we shed alonga stream at Brubaker Park. Justafter discerning that sh dontblink their eyes, my 8-year-oldpronounced that his rst-evercaught sh at least traded the painfor a full stomach.
I thought that was remarkablereasoning and couldnt help but
wonder if hed made some spiritualconnection about death that heperhaps gleaned from his Catholiceducation.
So after some further discussionabout death and its causes wesomehow wandered to thevenerable question about travelingback in time with the power tostop Adolf Hitler. Maggie rmlyrejected the notion; stating thatmurder is the worst sin man cancommit.
Michael reasoned that Hitler
was a mass murderer and offereddifferent methods for xing theFuhrer. Preferred choices includedbombs and machine guns but hewouldnt rule out poisoning Hitlerafter I told him of many failedassassination plots.
Maggie was appalled that anyonecould even consider violating Godstrust. This of course had Michael
pondering loopholes.Perhaps Mikes the future
George Carlin. Carlin once jokedabout the day in Catholic schoolwhen he asked the priest: Can Godcreate a rock so big that he himselfcant lift it?
Running with Maggies premise,Michael applied the bait just as hehad on his shing hook, statingJesus teaches that were to love ourenemies.
We both concurred that he wascorrect. Then Michael shot back:
Well Satan is our enemy, are wesupposed to love him too?
For whatever reason, mortalityhas emerged as a relevant topic forour family this summer and a recentincident evoked Mitch Albomsquote that the biggest themes oflife are put into the best focus whenheld up against the very sharp lightof mortality.
I got a frantic call from my wifeon Memorial Day morning, theday after we erected our pool in thebackyard. I could only determinefrom her cries that a 1-year-old boyhad drowned.
My blood fell like a waterfallfrom my head to my feet as shedescribed a toddler about to beairlifted in a helicopter parked atthe top of our street. She nallyexplained that the boy lived about250 yards from our home and hadfallen into a homemade pond made
from a sunken bath tub.Everyone in our neighborhood
knew the boy, Roger Martin, was gone despite Terre Hill FireCompanys almost instantaneousresponse. His mother, Ann Martin, later told me Roger was lifeless.
Two days later, the familyposted a hand written sign in frontof the home thanking everyone
for their prayers, stating Roger ismiraculously alive and well. Afamily member the next day toldme that Roger had taken his rststeps on the Wednesday he arrivedhome from the hospital.
His mother said the doctor atHershey Medical Center toldher hes seen hundreds of suchdrowning victims who almost neversurvive without permanent brain, heart, or other damage.
Mrs. Martin said The doctor saidYou are the lucky one.
Holding down the fortAlive and well ...
On occasion after occasion we areserved food in spite of embarrassingevidence that already we are overfed.
Often there is a kind of refreshmentmore needed than food. It is thenourishment of the spirit. Words ofadmiration. I admire the way youdo that work (or the situation youare in). Words of support, I will beremembering you in prayer.
In the family and in the church (thefamily of God) we have a never-endingneed to be recognized, affirmed, appreciated, loved, and told often
that we are. Then, and then only, arewe able sincerely and affectionately toserve up this kind of nourishment toothers.
In the Bible, St. Paul, who couldspeak harshly at times, encouragedChristians with these refreshing wordsof affirmation, We always thank Godfor you and all and always mentionyou in our prayers.
...We remember how you put yourfaith into practice, how your lovemade you work so hard... (I Thess.1:3, TEV).
There are more ways than one toserve up refreshments.
