From the Artistic DirectorSing Aotearoa is New Zealand’s premier forum for choral music. This year sees its seventh appearance – since its debut in 1990 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Treaty of Waitangi – and its third in the iconic city of Rotorua.

In developing the programme for SA16 we have once again focused on the needs of singers, from whatever types of choir, and asked ourselves what they would most enjoy singing, hearing and learning over the weekend. That said, choral directors and administrators and general concertgoers will also find an array of things to interest them. I’m delighted to welcome back Ben Parry, an undoubted hit in 2013, and to be presenting some of this country’s finest choral groups and practitioners to entertain and enlighten us at SA16. It promises to be another great festival!

John Rosser

SA16’s Signature EventThe Te Puia SingThe signature event of SA16 is ‘The Te Puia Sing’, held at the internationally famous New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, Te Puia. The combined SA16 choirs of some 500 voices will be conducted by our international guest conductor Ben Parry at three of the most beautiful locations in the Te Whakarewarewa geothermal valley.

Te Puia means, appropriately, gushing waters and steaming vents and is where, according to Te Arawa tribal history, the goddesses of fire Te Pupu and Te Hoata emerged from the earth’s core, creating the geysers, hot springs and mud

pools as they breathed in and out. Here the earth’s crust is at its thinnest and over 500

mud pools, fumaroles and vents, each with their own names, are found on the site.

Admission to Te Puia (usually $50) is free for SA16 delegates and their

families, for this event only. Transport will be arranged for those who have not

brought a car to SA16.

Singing at SA16

The Festival Choir: Te Kotahitanga Manu ReoAll delegates at SA16 will form part of this choir of over 500 voices led by our guest conductor, Ben Parry. Its repertoire will include the SA16 commissioned piece by Chris Artley, Language of Stones, with words by Robina Adamson, as well as a number of other works – to be performed at the signature event, the Te Puia Sing, and at the Final Concert.

Choir StreamsIn addition to the festival choir, delegates can elect to sing in one of the following choral ensembles:

• TUI SINGERS l Julian Raphael – for those who wish to sing more-quickly-learnt music, including rhythmic songs from a range of cultures

• KORIMAKO SINGERS l David Squire – for those who wish to sing more challenging part music. A basic standard of sight-reading is required

• KOKAKO SINGERS l Ben Parry – a forty-voice chamber choir, which will be auditioned and rehearsed in advance of SA16

Applying for the Kokako SingersThe Kokako Singers will be a chamber choir of around 40 voices formed just for SA16 and directed by our guest conductor, Ben Parry. They will perform on the Sunday in the formal evening concert, singing works by Byrd, Wilbye, Pearsall, Vaughan Williams, L’Estrange, Hamilton, Parry, Whitacre and Gjeilo.

A high level of vocal skill and musicianship is needed and singers must be prepared to audition in advance if required, as well as provide details of a contactable referee. Kokako Singers will need to prepare the repertoire fully before the first rehearsal.

The Kokako Singers will have a (compulsory) rehearsal on Friday 21 October from 10.00am to 4.00pm at the Energy Events Centre and may meet for sectional practices the week before SA16 (date and time to be agreed) in various centres. Other rehearsals will also be held during the choir stream sessions over the weekend.

Please apply online if you wish to apply for membership of this choir as applications will close on 15 August, with applicants notified by 30 August 2016. Kokako Singers are entitled to free registration at Sing Aotearoa, but will need to cover their other costs.
