We will sadly miss Ash’s contributions to our school but are overjoyed with her news and wish her well in future. Parent Helpers Steve and I conducted our first parent helpers session on Monday. Quite a few parents attended and the session I believe, was informative and at times entertaining. It is pleasing to have so many willing parent helpers at the school and I would encourage parents to be involved in any way possible. SAKG The kitchen/garden program is progressing well. I am amazed on what quality food comes from the kitchen. Every time I visit the kitchen all the children are 100% engaged and truly committed to their cooking task. Gregg and Anna are doing a wonderful job and our children are gaining many life long skills being involved in this program. Parent Concerns Just a reminder to please approach classroom teachers, coordinators or myself if there are any issues or concerns. It is hard to resolve issues/ concerns if staff or myself are not aware of them. Dorset has an open door policy for all parents and students so I would like to believe that parents/students are quite comfortable to approach staff to discuss any issues that may arise. Tesng, Tesng, Tesng The preps have experienced vigorous testing one-on-one with their teacher in Maths and Literacy. This is to provide a clear picture of where every child is at in their understanding of concepts and knowledge so that teachers can strategically target their planning and teaching. Its not okay to be away Student absence was high at DPS last year. We exceeded State and Like School benchmark data. It is important for families to realise every time school is missed there is a lost opportunity to improve in learning. The more frequent the absence, the more likely progress in learning will be limited. Our message is simple “It’s not OK to be away!” Listed below are the BENEFITS OF REGULAR ATTENDANCE OF SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS: The development of skills and attitudes such as self-discipline, punctuality, being organised and sticking to routines will optimise life choices. Leads to making friends and learning how to maintain relationships over a period of time. Leads to learning social skills necessary to live and work with others. Students are safer at school than on the streets. People are more positive towards those that have a good attendance attitude. The more students attend, the more they learn and the more they will like school. Please see attached Attendance Policy. School Uniform Families are strongly encouraged to ensure that their child wear the correct school uniform. The way in which the school uniform is worn sends an important message to the wider community, and reinforces a sense of pride and belonging amongst our students. Personal Goods The Department of Education and Training (DET) does not hold insurance nor does it accept responsibility for private property brought to school by students, staff and visitors. Students are discouraged from bringing any unnecessary or particularly valuable items to school such as mobile phones, calculators, toys, sporting equipment; DET does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and cannot pay for any loss or damage to such property. Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Kitchen News

This fortnight in the kitchen we are using the abundant and wonderful harvest of Spaghetti Squash, Corn, Tomatoes, Silverbeet, Beans, Herbs, etc.

The students have been intrigued and interested in preparing and cooking the spaghetti squash before it can be used in the recipe they are preparing.

The students in their kitchen sessions this term have also been completing a research activity consisting of photos of different fruits and vegetables and other ingredients they have or will be using in the kitchen.

This activity is to help them identify ingredients by their appearance so they can identify ingredients in the garden when harvesting. This will also help them to relate what they observe in the garden back to the produce they use in their kitchen sessions.

Students across all grades have been working very well in the kitchen and the team work and organisation they have displayed has been excellent.

Thank you to all the parent and grandparent helpers who have given some of their time to assist in the kitchen. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Just a reminder that helpers in the kitchen need to wear suitable footwear to avoid injuries, e.g. Thongs, open toed footwear, etc. is not suitable. Thank you for your assistance in regards to this.

Occasionally we have some kitchen sessions where the number of volunteers/parent helpers is a problem.

If anyone is interested in helping with this great program and assisting myself and the other teachers to ensure the sessions run smoothly and on time, please come down to the kitchen for further information or leave your name and contact details (e.g. Email address, etc.) with Nicole or Cynthia in the office and they can pass them on to me.

Thanks Gregg

LEADERSHIP BULLETIN

I would like to thank the school community for the friendly welcome. I am really enjoying my chats with parents and the opportunity to work in classroom programs with our dedicated staff and their enthusiastic students.

My key role is to support the leading teachers and the Acting Principal, Mrs Coppa, so that they can effectively plan and implement the educational programs that will benefit our students.

I have been working with DET for 38 years and have been a Principal of two schools. My last four years have been spent working as Assistant Principal at Bayswater South PS.

In my spare time I enjoy playing golf at Eastwood Golf Club and watching Collingwood play at the MCG.
