Dear Parishioners of St. Mary Church:
I’m writing to you about our plans to resume public Masses, beginning Monday, May 25. This is something we have been looking forward to with great anticipation. Yet, we need to acknowledge that participating in group activities, including Mass, involves risk. For this reason, Bishop Brennan has decreed that Catholics in the Diocese of Columbus are dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass at least through September 13, 2020. If you are not sure whether it is safe for you to attend Mass, or if you think you may be sick, you should stay home. Even if you feel perfectly healthy, you may consider attending Mass on a weekday, when the church is less crowded.
To ensure social distancing during Masses, we have reduced the number of seats available in our church. Every other pew has been blocked off. Within each pew, we need to maintain a space of six feet between individuals, unless they are members of the same household, in which case they can sit close together. Our ushers are being trained to assist people in following these guidelines. During the week, when there are no ushers, please observe these guidelines. We calculate that we can safely accommodate no more than 150 persons at each Mass. We anticipate that a certain number of people will choose not to attend Mass at this time, in which case we should have sufficient seating. However, if the number gets beyond our reduced capacity, we may have to ask some people to come at a different time.
Everyone over the age of two who attends Mass is asked to wear a cloth face covering. We will have paper masks available for those who need one. Also, wash your hands before coming to church, bring your own hand sanitizer with you, and do your best to avoid touching surfaces. We will disinfect surfaces between Masses. The restrooms in Moira Hall will be open, but no more than two persons will be allowed inside each restroom at any given time. The elevator will be available for those who truly need it; do not use the elevator except in case of genuine need.
At the beginning of every Mass, we will make a short announcement about how the reception of Holy Communion will take place, how the collection will work, etc. After we have resumed public Masses, we will continue to fine-tune our procedures going forward.
Our usual Mass schedule will resume with Mass at 8:30 a.m., Monday, May 25. Friday afternoon Eucharistic Adoration, with confessions from 5:00-6:00, will resume on June 5. Our Saturday confession schedule will change slightly to avoid crowding in the rear of the church: until further notice, Saturday confessions will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., beginning May 30. Additionally, on Saturday, May 23, we will have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Confessions from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

FORMED Pick of the week: Movie on the Life of St. Rita
May 22 is the feast of St. Rita (the saint my mother is named after). This saint’s life is inspiring and the movie is very interesting! Years ago Mom and I went to Cascia, Italy to see where St. Rita lived and where her incorruptible body lies in a glass coffin. It was beautiful. She is known as one of the saints of impossible cases.
