Lab Practical #1

• 26 stations:– 13 microscopes– 3 fresh hearts– 1 heart model– 8 vessel diagrams– 1 blood typing

• All stations have 2 questions (an A and a B), EXCEPT the vessel diagrams

• 1 minute per station

Lab 39

• Trachea: “Cartilage- Elastic and Hyaline” slide: mammalian trachea is on the left half of the slide. Draw and clearly label the trachea at low power and at one higher power. Label: respiratory epithelium (state the type), goblet cells, glands in the mucosa layer, cartilage (name the type); within the cartilage, identify chondrocytes and lacunae. Bracket and label the lamina propria. Label any blood vessels and RBC’s seen in your view.

Lung slides

• Lung: “Lung Human - simple squamous” Draw and clearly label the lung. Identify the alveoli and an alveolar duct. In addition, try to find and label at least one bronchiole, one arteriole and one small vein.

• Two lung tissue samples: look at side by side: “Lung-Containing Carbon Particles” and “Lung-Emphysema.” Sketch and clearly label what you see in the “Lung-Emphysema” slide. Label a bronchiole and alveoli.

Four Drawings

• Two trachea: one low and one medium or high power

• Normal lung

• Emphysemic lung – loss of elasticity, increased compliance

• You don’t have to draw the carbon particle lung but you need to look at it.
