MICROSCOPES

Unit 1 – Intro to Science

Types of Microscopes

Electron Microscope

Uses a beam of electrons to magnify image greater than 1000x (1000 times)

Kills observable cells so not used to view live specimens.

Compound Light

Light passes through lenses to magnify image up to 1000X

Used to observe living specimen.

Most commonly used microscope in biology

Compound because of multiple objectives.

Dissecting Microscope

Used for low magnification of three-dimensional objects- objects larger or thicker than the compound microscope can accommodate.

Magnifies between 10 and 40 times (10x-40x)

Microscope Magnification

To calculate the power of total magnification, multiply the power of the ocular lens by the power of the objective.

On our compound microscopes we have a 4, 10 and 40 objective.

The ocular lens (eye piece) magnifies 10 times.

Total magnification when looking in the microscope on the 4 power objective would be what? ________

Microscope Facts

When focusing on a specimen always start by using the scanning objective.

When using high power use only the fine adjustment knob.

The microscope will flip and invert an image

The higher the objective the less of an object you can see (pay attention to

these things when looking at the “e”

When in doubt, ask your teacher!!

Microscope care

Always carry with 2 hands

Only use lens paper for cleaning

Do not force knobs Always store

covered Keep objects clear

of desk and cords
