An epic sea kayak adventure awaits you along the Sierra de la Giganta on the western coast of the Sea of Cortez. This experience for avid sea kayakers will take you through one of the most beautiful mountain ranges with a hearty wildlife above and below the water’s surface. You’ll find yourself paddling south for eight days, 3-4 hours per day, along the Sierra’s coast from one amazing camp site to another, with flexibility and time to improve your sea kayaking skills, hike desert trails, snorkel in warm water full of colorful fish and invertebrates, or just relaxing on the beach, reading a good book and drinking a refreshing margarita. Stef Woods, from Back Woods Adventures and Ecomigrations, will ensure that during this demanding trip you will have delicious freshly made meals to pair with Baja California wine, happy hour drinks, snacks, and more, to make this ten day experience a vacation full of unforgettable moments for you in Baja.

Our rendezvous is in La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur with one night at El Moro Hotel. The morning of the 16th we’ll head to Espiritu Santo Island, where we’ll start paddling for eight days in “the world´s greatest aquarium”, according to Cousteau, and find ourselves “in a state of leave - taking, never to go nor to stay, but remain suspended in that golden emotion of love and longing: to be loved without satiety”, to quote John Steinbeck, The log from the Sea of Cortez.

La Giganta

Day 1The day starts with you leaving your home town and flying to La Paz, B.C.S., Mexico. In La Paz, the Ecomigrations staff will meet you at El Moro Hotel (your overnight hotel) for a trip orientation at 8:00 pm.

Day 2After breakfast the Ecomigrations staff will meet you at 9:00 am. at El Moro Hotel to transfer you to our camp site, we’ll stop for the first snorkeling opportunity of this adventure with whale sharks gathered in the La Paz bay.After our camp introduction, safety talk and kayak orientation, we’ll have our first meal on the beautiful Espiritu Santo Island, and then we’ll be ready to begin our first afternoon paddle in Baja.

Day 3Based on Espiritu Santo Island, a National Marine Park for the protection of the flora and fauna of the Sea of Cortez, and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, we’ll continue our Ecomigrations activities, a hearty variety ot water sports in beautiful protected coves and pristine and fertile reefs, hiking desert trails with their unique and protected animals and plants.

Day 4After breakfast, we’ll break camp and load our boats to reach our first camp site beach along the coastline of the Sierra de La Giganta. On our way, we’ll stop at Los Islotes, a rookery home to tons of different species of fish, invertebrates and birds.

At Los Islotes, we’ll have the opportunity to snorkel with highly curious sea lions, in their own element, and on their own terms.

Day 5-8We’ll be paddling north each day for 4-5 hours and we’ll cover 7-20 miles (depending on the group’s speed and the weather conditions), with frequent stops to stretch our legs and eat. We’ll also have the opportunity to explore coves and beaches along the coastline of the Sierra de La Giganta. Each day we’ll reach isolated beaches along the way for overnight camping. In the morning and afternoon we’ll have time to hike and learn more about geology and the native flora and fauna of this wonderful ecosystem, or we’ll simply jump into the skiff for an occasional morning of fishing or to have our “happy hour” while we enjoy sunset from the sea. During this part of the trip we’ll also learn about the lifestyle in the few coastal villages with friendly Baja families, their past history and their present day lives, in the hope of understanding why this part of the world is important not only for them, but for all of us. Some afternoons we can also take breaks from paddling because the snorkeling opportunities are too good to miss!

Day 9After a final breakfast along the coastline of the Sierra, we´ll break camp and load our boats to reach our final destination: Loreto. Once in Loreto, you can enjoy a nice hot shower and you’ll have time to take a walk downtown or take an afternoon siesta.

Day 10This is a travel day back home, unless you have arranged to spend extra time in Baja California Sur.
