HOLLAND Career theory

Holland’s Theory is the foundation for O*Net.

Holland’s theory is an attempt to organize knowledge of

self and to match that self with an occupational

environment.

Understanding Holland’s Theory will help you make good

choices and decisions about which occupations, careers,

majors, or training programs best fit you.

The Holland Codes or the Holland Occupational Themes (RIASEC) refers to a theory of careers and vocational choice (based upon personality types) that was initially developed by American psychologist John L Holland (1919-2008), Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University.

Holland originally labeled his six types as "motoric, intellectual, esthetic, supportive, persuasive, and conforming.“He later developed and changed them to: Realistic (Doers), Investigative (Thinkers), Artistic (Creators), Social (Helpers), Enterprising (Persuaders), and Conventional (Organizers).

Assumptions of Holland's theory

Individuals have unique characteristics.

Occupations have unique requirements.

Characteristics of both can be measured.

Individuals have greater satisfaction in jobs where there is

a match.

Individuals have unique characteristics. Not everyone is the same.

Occupations have unique requirements. Not every job is the same.

Characteristics of both can be measured. We can determine what is the same about a job and a person.

Individuals have greater satisfaction in jobs where there is a match. I am happier doing what I love instead of doing a job just to make money.

The Concept

People can be described as a combination of two or more of the possible six personality types.

R ealistic

I nvestigative

A rtistic

S ocial

E nterprising

C onventional

He is not trying to say that there are only six kinds of people in the world, But that all of the people in the world can still fit into one of the six categories.

Holland’s Hexagon

RIASEC

o Work Importance Locator

o Work Importance Profiler

There are several exploration tools that are used to assist you in finding your path. We are going to discuss the one that is based on Holland's Code. Interest profiler.

What does it mean

People of a given type are drawn to an environment of the same type:

Diversity

Inclusion

Culture

People of the same type are drawn together. They normally work well together in the three areas listed. These are also very important areas for and employer. Why?

Well for example if I am an employer and I have 7 people that have been working for me for 10 year or more and they all get along great and then all of a sudden I throw a new person into the mix and they are not the same and they do not get along I could upset the masses.

Help

We will discuss the following on the Talify Missouri.

What Is Talify Missouri?

• New way to match job seekers and employers –a step beyond traditional job matching.

• Combines candidate interests and behavioral strengths with education and experience.

o Education and experience

o Interests, work preferences and skills

o Three-part assessment

Talify Missouri is meant to be an enhancement to jobs.mo.gov and not a replacement of. Jobs.mo and Talify Missouri can be used together to help both you and employers by providing them with additional information.

Assessment contains three parts – 10 problem solving questions (the only right/wrong questions), self assessment of traits and statements that you agree/disagree with.

Assessment Results• Provides job seekers and employers with three

reports:

Personality Assessment –Shows strongest and weakest behavioral traits

Assertiveness, Empathy, Confidence, Sociability, Helpfulness, Thoroughness, and Problem Solving

Competency Feedback—Shows scores in 10 competency areas

Generating new business, cultivating existing business, providing service to others, working with data, managing others, entrepreneurial leadership, working on a team, planning and organizing, working with things, and solving complex problems.

What employers see and what you see are slightly different. Same information but from a different perspective.

You get feedback on the type of jobs most suited to your personality and employers see your strengths and weaknesses on the job. The point isn’t to keep somebody from applying for a particular job or to keep an employer from hiring a particular type of person, but rather to coach you on what jobs might be a better fit and how to overcome your weaknesses in a particular position.

For employers, the point is to know how to better coach someone with a particular weakness that meets the education/experience requirements.

Get the Best from Your Assessment

Enter as much information as possible. In order for you to maximize your Talify Missouri experience, it is important that you enter as much accurate information as possible. It is designed to make it easier for employers to find you (through multiple data points) when you conduct a search.

Remember there are no right or wrong answers. Employers never see your specific answers including the problem-solving raw score. There are no right and wrong answers, except for the problem-solving section, which employers never see the raw score.

No judgment associated with personality traits. A high or low score in a certain personality trait isn’t good or bad, respectively. It all depends on the context. If you are a computer programmer working by yourself at night, it may be good to have a lower sociability score!

Some Advice

o Envision your ideal future.

o Find resources on goal-setting.

o Set aside time to review your work history (and your life).

o Consider the kind of workplace you like.

o Think about your working conditions.

o Finally, list your short-term and long-term objectives.

Envision your ideal future. If you had no constraints, what would you like to be doing five years from now? What next step would help you get there?

Find resources on goal-setting. Research career guidance books on Amazon, go to the library, visit helpful websites, use your college placement office. If you want to use paid help, consider a career counselor. Be sure to get references.

Set aside time to review your work history (and your life). List the jobs, tasks, or activities that you have most enjoyed, regardless of whether they were paid or unpaid. Then list things that you truly disliked about the work you have done. See what common threads you can find in your past.

Consider the kind of workplace you like. Small, medium, or large? Loose and flexible or tightly structured? Family atmosphere or no-nonsense business focus? Choosing the wrong work environment can be as bad as selecting the wrong type of work.

Think about your working conditions. Do you mind travel? How much? Are long hours okay? Or a long commute? How much time do you need for family or other non-work activities?

Finally, list your short-term and long-term objectives. If you are considering a career change, be sure to research the new job or field so that you know what you’re getting into. “Dream jobs” often look somewhat different once you are in them.

Figure Out Your Skills

This is a great start to an excellent resume.

Assess self-management skills

Assess your transferable skills

Employment skills or hard skills

Self-Management Skills (Soft Skills) How you get along with other people and the type of work ethic you have are self- management skills. No employer wants to hire someone with a poor attitude or someone who has a “personality problem”.

Transferable Skills These skills transfer from one job to the next because they can apply to many different kinds of work settings

Employment Skills (Hard Skills) These are actual skills that you have obtained one way or another. An example might be budgeting which you learned from doing your own budget at home.
