Parents and teachers working together

for the benefit of the children.

KS2 SATS 2017This presentation will be published to our website

Furthermore, we will be sending home our

Goosewell Guide to SATs shortly with some extra

hints, tips and pointers.

How are we preparing?

• Daily Maths and Literacy lessons

• SPaG or Guided Reading taught on a daily basis

• Continuous assessment in lessons to inform next steps

• Practising previous SATs style questions within lessons

• Assessment Weeks

• Booster classes and intervention support

• Assessed writing tasks focusing on a variety of skills

• Individual target setting and conferencing for writing

• Home learning (Mathletics and CGP books)

WHAT WILL BE ASSESSED?

MENTAL TEST

This is no longer assessed as it was

in place of the mental test.

The tests have questions of 1 and 2 marks and children are given marks for working out if they finish the task, but have a minor calculation error.

three to four different, un-linked texts, with a total

of 35 to 40 questions. (Totalling 50 marks).

following texts increasing in level of difficulty.

Questions worth 1,2,or 3 marks each.

There is a focus on being able to answer inferential

questions based on the text.

WRITING 2017There is now a greater focus on the progress children make throughout the school year,

as opposed to a test-day snapshot of what they know.

• Teachers will assess children’s writing composition. Children’s

results for English writing will be a judgement of their work

across Year 6.

• Children's grammar, punctuation and spelling skills will be

assessed as part of their writing, but their creativity and

writing style will also be evaluated.

• Schools will moderate their judgements with other local

schools and may be moderated by their Local Authorities

too.

What is assessed in writing?

SCIENCE 2017

• ‘Science sampling’ has been reintroduced.

• Schools that are selected will be notified by mid-May, and are legally

obliged to participate if chosen.

SCIENCE SAMPLING - Every Two Years

PAPER 1 PAPER 2 PAPER 3 25 minutes or less

Results will be published at a national level; neither schools nor parents will be

given their children’s individual results, and they won’t be used in league tables.

This year is not a Science Sample year.

WHEN ARE THE TESTS?

Date

Monday 8th May English Reading

Tuesday 9th May English grammar, punctuation and spelling

Wednesday 10th May

Maths Arithmetic Test (Paper 1)

Maths Reasoning Paper (Paper 2)

Thursday 11th May Maths Reasoning Paper (Paper 3)

All KS2 SATs will be held in the week beginning 8th May 2017.

Some support can be given to children who have an Education and

Health Care Plan. Requests for additional time will be made by

teachers using their knowledge of children and the children’s

individual needs.

Unless there are exceptional circumstances, no help can be given with

the Reading tests.

A teacher can help a child to read instructions on the maths test.

Children with motor skill impairment can have an enlarged copy of

the test.These have been ordered.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

EXPLAINING THE RESULTS

“A pupil’s scaled score will be based ontheir raw score. The raw score is the totalnumber of marks a pupil receives in atest, based on the number of questionsthey answered correctly. The pupil’s rawscore will be translated into a scaledscore using a conversion table. A pupilwho achieves the national standard willhave demonstrated sufficient knowledgein the areas assessed by the tests.”DfE 2016

Your child will receive a scaled score based upon the total number of marks that they receive in the test. This will determine if they are working at, below or above the expected standard.

• A scaled score of 100+ indicates your child is working above the national standard.

• A scaled score of 100 indicated your child is working at the national standard.

• A scaled score of less than 100 indicates your child is working below the national standard.

The national standard will not bedetermined until the tests havebeen completed nationally.

REPORTING RESULTS• Children’s progress, as well as their achievement, will be

measured and reported on in school performance tables.

• Teacher assessments will be passed on to secondary schools

so they can be used as part of the planning process for Year 7

teaching.

• Your child’s results are sent home at the end of the summer

term. These will show you if your child has met the National

Standard.

• Try not to put pressure on your child.

• Support with homework and the targets which will be discussed

at parents evening.

• Read regularly and discuss a variety of texts – not just ‘listening’

to your child read.

• Short bursts of arithmetic questions, times tables and problem

solving etc.

• Please remember that the methods that we teach in school are

the methods that the children will be assessed against.

• Please don’t use previous SATs Papers to practise at home as

these are used to prepare and assess children in school.
