KS2 SATsWeek beginning Monday 9th May 2016
O Year 6 will be the first to take the new SATs
papers.
O There will be a completely new marking
scheme.
O At the end of Year 6, children will sit tests in:
O Reading
O Maths
O Spelling, punctuation and grammar
Why?
O The results will be used to measure your
child's progress and the school's
performance.
O Your child’s marks will be used in
conjunction with teacher assessment to give
a broader picture of their attainment.
O We give our Teacher Assessment’s direct to
Samuel Ward in March.
Reading Paper
O Your child will have one hour, including
reading time, to complete the test.
O The reading booklet consists of one 800-
word text and two passages of 300 words.
O We expect there to be more fiction than non-
fiction.
O The first text is the easiest.
There will be a selection of question types, including:O Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to
show the order in which they happen in the story’
O Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’
O Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’
O Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’
O Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’
Maths tests
O Children will sit three papers in maths:
O Paper 1: arithmetic,
30 minutes (written) 36 questions
O Papers 2 and 3: mathematical fluency,
solving problems and reasoning,
40 minutes per paper, approximately 20
questions each
Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation
O The grammar, punctuation and spelling test
will consist of two parts:
O a grammar and punctuation paper requiring
short answers, lasting 45 minutes,
O and an aural spelling test of 20 words,
lasting around 15 minutes.
Grammar question types
O The grammar and punctuation test will
include two sub-types of questions:
O Selected response, e.g. ‘Identify the
adjectives in the sentence below’
O Constructed response, e.g.
‘Correct/complete/rewrite the sentence
below,’ or, ‘The sentence below has an
apostrophe missing. Explain why it needs an
apostrophe.’

O The Academy has bought each child 7 revision books:
O Grammar
O Punctuation
O Spelling
O Reading comprehension
O Arithmetic
O Number, ratio and algebra
O Geometry, measures and statistics
O (Some children will also need an Advanced Maths book)
Revision resources
O Use the title on the revision guide to find the page you need in the revision guide
O Eg Pronouns are on pages 6 and 7
O Answer as many questions as you can without your study guide
O Use your study guide for the harder questions
O If you still can’t answer the question ask for post-teaching at school.
Practicalities
O There are seven sections on the revision
timetables.
O Ideally do one subject eg spelling or
arithmetic every day.
O Plan your time carefully – get ahead rather
than behind.
O Bring all your revision books into school on a
Wednesday to mark them.
Questions
O Do we have to use our revision books?
We expect every child will want to prepare themselves as best they can.
O What if I miss a day?
Plan ahead or catch up straight away.
O When can I get some extra help at school?

Tutoring or Revision during enrichment
O Can I google it if I’m confused?
Yes but always write ‘KS2 SATs adverbs’ rather than just adverbs.
