Korean War• Japan controlled the territory throughout World War
II – After defeat the Soviet Union controlled Northern areas
and USA controlled Southern Areas*Sound familiar? Why?
• 1950 North Korean troops entered South Korea (with Soviet Union’s help)• United States helps South Korea- wished to “save Korea
from communism”• Containment!
• 1953- cease fire signed creating the DMZ- demilitarized zone

North Korea• Once Communist based
Government, now totalitarian (totally controlled by the government leader)
• Korean Worker’s Party• Dicator- Kim Jong Un• Economy- Run by the state
South Korea• Government divided into 3
branches• President- 5 year term and
head of the govt.• Economy- “Production,
Exports, and Construction!”• Western Influence
Dictators of Korea
• Kim Jong Il- Dictator of North Korea, 1994-2012
• Under his regime, North Korea was charged with many human rights violations– Starvation– Public executions– Slave labor
• Very secretive society• Nuclear program against UN policies
created before the Korean War• Died in December 2011- Son, Kim
Jong Un took over North Korea• Threats of nuclear missiles
Vietnam War• Controlled by France during Imperialist Era• 1954- peace agreement between the French
and Vietnamese– Created 2 countries– Communist- North Vietnam– Non-Communist- South Vietnam
• 1957- Vietnam War breaks out– North Vietnam invades South Vietnam– Battle between the 2 for control of the nations*Think about it- Do you see any connections between the Cold War?
Vietnam War Continued
• United States become involved- wants to prevent communism from spreading– Policy of Containment to prevent “Domino
Theory”• Fighting spilled over to Cambodia and Laos– Communist governments also began
• 1975- North Vietnam takes full control of the country
• Following the Vietnam War, the entire peninsula becomes communist
Opposition to Vietnam War• U.S. citizens divided on whether or not to
become involved in the war.• Many felt it was not “our place” to become
involved.• Protests- Kent State• Music
News Article Activity• Utilize your notes, the video , the FYI and Data sheet to
create a brief news article regarding the causes for Vietnam War and American protests against the war.
• Categories to include in your news article:– Title– 1 paragraph regarding the war (causes and effects/ type of
warfare)– 1 paragraph regarding opponents of the war (protestors)– 1 image COLORED that would help describe your writing• This could be a map, a person, an image from the battle field,
protestors, or any other ideas you may have!• If you finish in class, work on Unit 5 reflections and give
your notebook some TLNC!
