Thank you for giving me the opportunity and honor of being the Tree of Life President for 2016-
2017.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rick Cohn for his four years of strong leadership. He
has been great to work with and we always seem to be on the same page regarding the issues at
hand. Thank you Rabbi Linda Joseph for your leadership during this transition year.
I would like to thank David Carr for his outstanding contributions of time, organization and work
to make the Big Nosh successful every year he has been chairman. I am grateful to all of you
who make a commitment to support the Temple and I will need your help going forward.
You might wonder how I got here; Rick Cohn contacted me out of the blue two years ago and
asked me to serve as First Vice President. I am a Tarheel but Susan was born and raised in the
Tree of Life and we have been members of Tree of Life since 1978. All four of our children were bar and bat mitzvahed here-
The rest was history!
I have several objectives for the coming year:
-Grow the Temple membership
-Balance the budget
-Support our new Rabbi Eric Mollo and Rabbi Carolyn Glatstein
-Creative fund raising
I feel this will be a truly exciting year for the Tree of Life and with your continued support, we can make it happen.

FROM THE RABBI
Rabbinic Report - Annual General Meeting, Tree of Life Congregation
May 11 2016
Chag Sameach! As we gather together on this eve of Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel Independence Day,
it is a time of reflection on how far our Jewish homeland has come, the victories and challenges
she has faced from 1948 until this day. We celebrate her… our Temple celebration will be this
Friday night. I do hope you can join us.
An Annual General Meeting is also a time of reflection on how far we have come over the past
year, our victories and challenges. As your interim rabbi I came to Tree of Life Congregation to
celebrate your 120th year, to provide the bridge leadership between Rabbi Daniel Sherman and
Rabbi Eric Mollo, and to ensure that your rabbinic search went well, to plant “seeds” for the fu-
ture, and to help put systems in place that would assist in the success of your next rabbi.
As your Rabbi, I have officiated at funerals, Bnai Mitzvah, visited the sick and housebound,
named babies, attended the Mikvah, liaised with Federation and represented your community at
events. I have planned services with Sharon Witherell and others and led those services on Fri-
day night, festivals and once monthly on Saturday. I have taught Confirmation and our 9th Grade,
co-led with Dori Nudelman a trip to NYC with them, and will be celebrating in 2 weeks 7 wonder-
ful 10th graders who will speak about how they imagine their future Jewish identity. In other words, rabbinic business as usual.
We have achieved much over the past year. A clean up of the office and building; the beginnings of putting in a new data base and phone system, a
mapping of the congregation’s regularities and responsibilities, the initiation of monthly staff meetings, an inventory of files, an analysis of the congre-
gation’s culture and discussion of future directions. Along with your Board, we reached out to the whole congregation during the Columbia flood and
ensured that those who needed assistance got help. Charged with making our services more participatory, I introduced “Shehechiyanu” sharing mo-
ments into the services and increased the honors. We have had some lay leaders “layn” Torah and speak to us. And thanks to the hard work of the
Ritual Committee we now have a handbook with the congregation’s policies, old and new, for worship and lifecycle.
Our Religious School has continued to educate our children and to program for families and the community thanks to the administration of Dori
Nudelman who stepped in at the last moment when Risa Strauss suddenly left our community. Both Dori and Elizabeth Tyler went above and beyond
their call of duty to make sure that our programs continued as normally as possible with little information and background left for them.
I have enjoyed designing all school programs like the Tu BiShevat Seder with Dan Nichols and the Passover Seder this year to make them meaningful
to all who participated. Our B’nai Mitzvah continued being tutored as I took on that task once done by Risa along with the Rabbi, aided by some able
congregants – Amy Wilkerson and Laura Kagan – who made sure our children could read Hebrew. Our presence was still felt in the Columbia Jewish
News as I took on the task of writing the regular article.
Amongst all that we have achieved, there are still challenges that must be faced.
It has been 20 years since the congregation has undergone a visioning process on who they are and what they stand for. Visioning, that includes rab-
bi, educator and congregants, and an action plan for implementing that vision needs to be a high priority in the coming year.
Ours is still a very office- centered, staff-centered congregation. Because of our numbers, achieving our best is not viable in such a paradigm. While
we have amazing participation of congregants at the Big Nosh and on certain active committees such as the Green Team or the Sisterhood – the vol-
unteer culture and appreciation of volunteers in this congregation is still a work in progress. We need to find meaningful ways to engage, train and
grow leaders and volunteers and participation, so that Rabbi Mollo and the staff will feel supported in their creativity and be able to concentrate on
the big picture and rabbinic work, and have success in his tenure at Tree of Life.
As we gather together on this eve of Yom Ha’atzmaut, I remember how needed and how impossible the task of establishing a Jewish State seemed to
our early Zionist pioneers. Theodore Herzl, the “father” of political Zionism articulated the hope – “If you will it. It is no dream.” Friends, Tree of Life
Congregation is such a wonderful community with potential. Dream what you could be. Strive with your will to make it happen.
Thank you to everyone who made Richard and I feel so welcome in Columbia this year. A special thanks to Rick Cohn my President partner, Jeff Selig
who went out of his way to help me integrate and understand the congregational culture, to Board Members and Committee Chairs who offered
friendship and support. Enormous thanks to our staff, Elizabeth Tyler and Demitrus Gilmore, who do their best to keep things running. And of course,
to Dori Nudelman, who stepped into a difficult task of programming and coordinating the school and congregational programs with good cheer.
I look forward to continuing as your rabbi through the end of June. We still have time to pray, play, and participate together. It has
been a privilege to be among you.
Todah Rabbah – Thank you!

The Green Team would like to thank Rabbi Joseph for her wonderful support and inspiration during the past year and wish her
well in the future. We would also like to welcome Rabbi Mollo and his family and we look forward to collaborating with him.
We have had a successful year. We are looking forward to the coming year when our walkway will be built and we will have
more opportunities to educate our congregation and the public about stormwater management. We plan to earn the
GreenFaith Water Shield, which will make us even better stewards of the earth.
We also hope to have many more rain garden visitors at the Big Nosh, as well as make some minor improvements to our
greening.
Additionally we hope to expand programming for our youth program, the Saplings.
The Green Team benefits from the Holland Bulb sale. If you would like to order bulbs, please contact the Temple office or Cheri
Alexander.
We will continue our recycling programs during the summer and hope everyone will participate. Please bring in 6-pack rings,

Big Nosh Sponsorship
The 2016 Big Nosh was a big success. The food, education, and entertainment were great as always, and we could not have asked for better weather. We estimate the crowd to be between 1,500 - 1,600 people. We had a constant flow of visitors all day long, and they enjoyed the event very much. As in the past, we had a wide selection of food, desserts, education, and entertainment. The Four Fathers and the Irmo band provided the great music while our guests were in the social hall. Outside, we had a bouncy house and slide for the kids and vendors for the adults, not to mention all our food tents and the rain garden. We also continued our tradition of supporting local charities by inviting Harvest Hope to have a tent, and we donated food items to a local shelter. The seventh annual Big Nosh was another great success. This year the Big Nosh went green. We purchased and used biodegradable food containers, and we had separate waste containers for the various items. The Green Team spent hours researching options and testing containers to make sure they would meet our needs. They also spent much time after the event separating the items to ensure everything was properly packaged, and they delivered the bags to the appropriate recycling locations. The Big Nosh is possibly one of the first food events in the state to go completely green. I have to thank them for their dedication and drive to make this happen. I would like to thank all our sponsors, many of whom sponsor us every year. It just goes to show how important they feel this event is to the community. I would like to thank everyone who came out on Saturday to help with the final preparations for the big day and to everyone who volunteered their time on Sunday. Also, thank you to everyone who donated baked goods to Bubbe's Bakery and for taking the time to make your delicious treats. A very large thank you to everyone who cooked and prepared the various food items. Many hours were spent over the last few weeks preparing and cooking all the items on our menu. A special thanks to the Tree of Life staff, Elizabeth, Dori, Demetris, and Rabbi Linda for all their hard work and dedication to make this event the success it was. Finally, and certainly not least, I would like to thank all the members of the Big Nosh committee for their dedication. Planning started back in October, and they spent many many hours planning this event. It would not have been possible without their dedication. We had some new hurdles to overcome this year but we did it as a team, and everything came together to make it a wonderful day. Thanks to everyone who helped make the Seventh Annual Big Nosh a success!!
