Knowledge Incubation for TEQIP

Importance of technical education in India cannot go unnoticed. More than 1.5

million engineers pass out every year in India. If trained and utilized in an

efficient way, this massive technical manpower can play a major role in the

development of technical sector of India. As TEQIP entered its phase III, it aims

at-

Improving the quality of engineering education in existing TEQIP

institutions with a special consideration for low income states and

Special Category States (SCS).

Support to strengthen few affiliated technical universities to improve

their policy, academic and management practices

Twinning arrangements to build capacity and improve performance of

institutions and Affiliated Technical Universities (ATU) participating in

focus states.

KIT IIT Kanpur aims to become a support system for TEQIP affiliated technical

colleges in India by organizing specially designed programs aiming to upgrade

education in these colleges and empower and encourage them to facilitate their

teachers and students to deliver quality education and undertake research in an

efficient manner. In last 6 years KIT IIT Kanpur has organized almost 80

programs which includes International conferences, training programs,

workshops, online courses, short courses and internship programs with the aim

of building a common platform where teachers and students of TEQIP institutes

can come together to discuss academics with experts from all over the world

and exchange ideas on how to improve/make changes in the academic

environment of their institutes

TEQIP at IIT Kanpur has been working towards creating opportunities

for teachers and students of TEQIP colleges all over India to take part

in TEQIP programs and enhance their teaching and research. This

document presents a brief overview of what Knowledge Incubation for

TEQIP, IIT Kanpur has achieved in last one year.

Effective teacher training programs through short-courses, schools, workshops, conferences and seminars.

Help foster a research culture in the colleges through visiting researcher programs, allowing use of advanced research infra-structure, advice on setting up research activities, collaborative research, seeding

of research activities, interaction with international researchers of repute, etc.

Improve classroom teaching through interventions like model curriculum for core courses, discussions on desired mandatory courses,

mandatory experimental training for students, desirable elective courses, new sub-specializations, etc.

Improve the learning experience of the student through open participation in courses, internship program, fully supported visits to IIT Kanpur to avail of library and laboratories, initiate student

research projects, MOOC based courses.

Share the IIT experience with the faculty and administration in order to help these colleges improve their academic and financial

management structure – focusing all the effort into providing an excellent learning environment and experience to the student and the

teacher.

TEQIP Events held from August 2018- March 2019

1. TEQIP Workshop on Modal Analysis: September

17-21, 2018

Modal analysis has a

wide range of

applications, from

aerospace

engineering to food

technology and

almost everything one

can think of. This 5-

day workshop aimed

at introducing the

science and practice of modal analysis as a technique to solve

vibration related problems through rigorous theory and lab

sessions. Teachers, students and people from industry attended

this workshop. This workshop provided a comprehensive review

of vibration theory with focus on the practical implementation

of experimental modal analysis testing which widened

participant’s understanding of vibrations. Concepts of digital

processing of measurements, excitation and measurement

techniques, details and functioning of vibration measuring

instruments and detailed analysis of measured data were the

main focus of this workshop. There were 16 lab sessions planned

in this event to provide instructive guidelines for dynamic

testing, selection/placement considerations of sensors and

actuators, and for system identification using modal parameter

extraction methods.

2. TEQIP Course on Robotics: 24 September - 5

October 2019

Importance

of Robotics

cannot be

undermined

in today’s

world.

From large

scale

industries to

necessities of

a simple household; Robots are all around us. The

opportunity for robotics spans over wide range of industries

and geographies. Given how every passing year is making

world increasingly automated, this will further accelerate

over the next 10 years. Keeping this in mind, to encourage

TEQIP colleges to inspire their teachers and faculty to get

involved in robotics, KIT organized the third course in

Robotics this year in association with Indian Technical and

Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Program. The course

comprised of the essential theoretical aspects of robotics

increasing energy

demand as well as

for curtailing

environment

deterioration due to

the use of fossil fuels. The direct conversion of solar energy to

electricity is achieved by Solar Photovoltaics (PV), making it

extremely attractive. India, blessed with abundant incident

Solar Energy and many sunny days throughout the year. The

course aims to deliver concepts related to solar Photovoltaics

Closure

KIT, IIT Kanpur has created an excellent platform for teachers

and students to facilitate interaction with the best brains in the

country and outside. Through several workshops, short term

courses, online courses, symposiums etc. It has helped the

participants to become familiar with new and improved teaching

techniques and latest developments in their research field.

Attending the various KIT workshops has increased their

knowledge about various advanced topics. Through the

workshops and seminars which acted as training programs, the

students and faculty of the various TEQIP institutes got exposed

to the current research and technology. Most of these workshops

focused on emphasizing the key issues in the subject areas and

hence has prepared teachers to teach the students in a much more

effective manner. During these programs students from various

institutes got the chance to learn from the best professor and they

increased their knowledge as well. The summer internship and

visiting researcher program which has been launched as part of

the KIT activities has been appreciated by the students and

faculty members is providing a much needed exposure to

students and faculty of TEQIP institutes. Organizing more

programs like these can encourage several institute-institute

interactions which can encourage participants to explore future

research collaborations and discuss teaching methodologies so

that they can hone and expand their pedagogical skills for a

better teaching/learning environment.

The initiative taken by TEQIP is playing a key role in developing

research and teaching at the various participating institutes.

Through these interactions teachers of TEQIP affiliated

engineering institutes have learned new teaching concepts in

various fields which they can practice at their parent institute and

expand their pedagogical goals. TEQIP has helped the

Page 24: Knowledge Incubation for TEQIP IIT Kanpur · 2019-07-22 · extremely attractive. India, blessed with abundant incident Solar Energy and many sunny days throughout the year. The course

23

participating institutes to improve their infrastructure at the

Institutions; it has enabled faculty participation in conferences

and workshops in India and abroad, and exposure to faculty

members to facilities and research work being carried out at

good universities. All this has encouraged them to improve and

expand their teaching and research skills. But more initiatives

are needed to further enhance the technical education in these

institutes. Setting up of an effective evaluation system can help

monitor the development/weakness of these institutes and on the

basis of these assessment reports the road ahead can be planned.

There are motivated teachers and students who are ready to work

hard and make a difference but a strong and equally motivated

administration system is crucial to help them and pave the way

to improvement in these institutes.

Feedback Summary (source: feedback forms)

We communicated with workshop/internship participants about

what more TEQIP can do to help them progress academically

and sieved participant feedback forms of past year to find out

what support TEQIP institutes require from TEQIP to assist

them to further enhance their teaching and research. Following

are some areas, which were highly demanded by them:

Laboratory access at IIT Kanpur

Library access at IIT Kanpur

Attend courses at IITs

Distant PhD. mentoring by IIT faculty

Facilitate internships for teachers and students

Extended / Flexible research programs

E-courses/ MOOC on specific topics

Language Programs

Access to journals

TESTIMONIALs

Get so much clarity regarding solar cell and the

knowledge I got I will surely propagate to my

students so that they also attend this much

impressive workshops in future.

It is very helpful for the getting research in

the area of the solar PV. Main thing is that

we get the laboratories visit for the better

understanding

Courses which are conducted through

TEQIP have a very high potential. Precise in

knowledge gain

Conferences are good practice for learnings.

So their scope in future is vital

Lecture by expert provide enlightenment

on the way one understand a problem

We need help in setting labs for research work &

providing adequate training.
