YES MINISTER . . . Recently we were pleased — and indeed relieved — to let you know that there would be six new class-room units for our Knocklyon School, come September next. Barring earthquakes, tornadoes or some such natural disaster, we are confident, that with a little more pushing, pulling and dragging, and a lot of God's help, all will be well for the new school year.

Since last September we have been involved in a sort of running battle— or more accurately, a war of wits, with the Department of Education. Now we are talking about that slightly sinister word, bureaucracy, in the mode of "Yes, Minister". With respect, you may talk of Longfellow's "Mills of G o d " grinding slowly, but you ain't seen nuttin', until you take on bureaucracy.

Now immediately let it be said that this is in no way a reflection on the personnel of the Depart-ment. By and large, they are a decent lot— they are victims of the system, almost as much as those of us who have to contend with it. During the campaign, by dint of numerous phone calls and various meet-ings, we established good warm relationships. We even got on first name terms — call me George, sort of thing!

They did not over relish the protests and the hassle, being themselves, to a large extent, ham-strung by the system, but then, I reckon, all is fair in love and war. And the much maligned politicians were in on the act also — being in generous mood just now, probably not as bad a bunch as painted, either! Anyway, pressure mounted, inevitably tempers frayed and we were all going about dis-tractedly, pleading that we were doing our best in the circumstances.

And all the time, the real enemy was, you guessed it — bureaucracy. When one considers the various sections that comprise a Department, it is easy to visualise its deadly potential for crushing, entangle-ment and grinding to a virtual standstill. Much of this is of necessity, at the same time there would seem to be ample scope for increasing efficiency.

But come now, let's be honest, when all the dust has really settled, bureaucracy might be to us, Irish, a friendly enemy — deep down maybe we have a soft spot for the odd bit of intrigue, the hassle and the little bit of fight. And when all the battle's over do we not end up, often enough, if we are sensible, shaking hands, laughing at one another and loving one another — surely a touch of God in bureau-cracy, so it can't be all that bad?

CHINA BOUND Medical scientist Vincent Kenny from Glenvara Park, will next month visit China to help set up two ground breaking community health projects. He will become one of a handful of Irish medical experts to ever visit the country at the invitation of the State. Two major medical schools in Peking and Shanghai are paying the expenses for his month long stay.

He will be visiting the country in his capacity as director of the new Dublin based Community Health International Group and intends to set up health centres in rural areas near the two cities with the aim of tackling problems such as Malaria.

The visit was organised during a recent trip to the Philippines where Vincent met a Professor Li Tian Jin who is involved with one of the medical schools and was impressed by the degree of community participation in a health project which Vincent was organising at the time.

We wish you good luck on your trip, Vincent!

A DATE WITH MARK COSTIGAN

1 |

L

h R * « Have you ever noticed how many talented people live in the Knocklyon area? Perhaps there is something about the mountain air that attracts them, but whatever i t is, be it sport, business or entertainment, they certainly hit the headlines.

Last week I met Mark Costigan, a handsome young man who is perhaps better known as the Presenter of 'Late Date' on Radio 1. He came to live in Knocklyon two years ago wi th his wife Helene and they now have a gorgeous little son, Daniel who is 4 months old. Mark spent most of his young life in Ballsbridge where he lived wi th his father, a Corkman and his mother a native of Dublin and was educated at Gormanston and Blackrock College. One of a family of six, his eldest sister Brenda is the Cookery Expert and another sister Mary, has written a very successful book "Gett ing into College". When Mark left school, his main interest was music. He earned his living, partly as a professional musician and partly by work-ing in various jobs. Eventually he settled in an auctioneering f i rm where he happily sold houses by day and sang and played by night. He has only been in broadcasting for 5 years, and how he came to join Radio Eireann is quite an amazing story.

In 1984 Fate stepped in when the f i rm in which he worked closed down. There was of course the group to f i l l his t ime, but here again all was not as it should be. From the constant playing of music, Mark developed a ringing in his ears which was diagnosed as Tinnitus. Noth-ing could be done to cure it. He tried every-thing, even resorting to acupuncture. Pills and ointments were useless. He swallowed huge quantities of herbal medicine, distilled by

numerous herb experts round the country, but all to no avail. One day, somebody said to him "Why don' t you write to Gaybo?" so he did, requesting Gay to ask listeners for a cure. Imagine his surprise when the Gay Byrne office called him with an invitation to talk on the Radio and discuss his problem over the air! A couple of weeks later he received another letter — this time f rom the Light Entertainment Department of RTE saying "wou ld you be interested in doing an audition for Radio?" That was how he got his contract for the late night spot. He was in.

'Late Date' is presented by Mark three or four nights a week. It is a delightful programme, a mixture of different types of music — a perfect combination which is guaranteed to soothe, relax and unwind you after a busy day. His presentation is pleasant and easy and as he talks he makes one feel that the music he chooses to play is just for you and his message is a very personal one. He sings too and writes many of his own songs. Indeed his song "Every Single Move She Makes" was second to Johnny Logan's "Ho ld Me N o w " in the final of the National Song Contest which picks the Euro-vision entry. He still sings, plays and does the odd gig wi th the group 'Stepaside". You can see them from time to time in the Purty Lof t , over the Purty Kitchen in Dun Laoghaire.

Does he have time to relax? Like most of us he likes reading, exercise, a bit of golf and watching TV. This year he hopes to go to France, somewhere near La Rochelle. Perhaps camping or caravanning wi th a tr ip to the magical lie de R6. He has holidayed in the States where he lived it up for a few weeks in a sumptuous house inrthe sunny hills of California complete wi th swimming pool, jacuzzi, champagne and the hot Californian sun. But somehow he still clings to the memories of the many summers he spent amid the glorious mountain scenery of West Cork and the breath-taking beauty of Bantry Bay.

What about the future? Mark loves his job wi th a dedication second to none. His ambition is to improve as a broadcaster — a modest ambi-t ion for such a likeable and talented young man and one which he wi l l no doubt achieve. " I just fell into broadcasting" he says. Maybe, but what a stroke of luck for RTE.

WALKING IN THE LIGHT They looked and sounded like angles as the procession came from the sacristy towards the altar. This was the scene in the Church on 13 th and 20th May when a total of 204 children, each one carrying a gift for the poor, assembled to receive their First Holy Communion.

For weeks they had been prepared by the teachers, and the beautiful hymns had been sung over and over again to make sure they would be perfect on the day — and they were. If any butterflies were present at the start of the ceremony they soon flew away when Fr. Joe assured the children they had nothing to worry about. In his gentle way he explained how this was their day, and how Jesus would come to them in a special way for the first time.

As each child went to the altar for this special event the school choir sang their hearts out. Many parents couldn't help the pools of tears forming in their eyes; feeling proud of their children and thinking perhaps of another big step in their lives.

Most of the children returned to their seats with toothless grins; a few looking just a little bit scared. When they all gathered on the altar* for the final hymn 'Walk in the Light of God' the innocence of each one shone through, and so did the presence of Jesus in their hearts. Let's hope that stays with them forever.

near Editor . . -1« there any chance of putting up a clock in the fhurch? Time and again I go into the Chinch wonder-ing what time it is. Have I fasted for an hour before receiving Holy Communion? I'd know if I was late on arrival and roughly what time I would get home at. What do you think? Big Ben

Dear Editor , „ , _ , . Many thanks for your series on the Secondary Schools.

hope you will continue it. Just one question, when should parents put their children's names down for secondary school? Maybe you could ask the principal of the Senior School for his opinion on this and let me know. Yours etc.

Dear Editor I hope I will be forgiven for commenting on a section of the newsletter strictly reserved for "Young Ones Only", but in spite of being on the wrong side of 40 ,1 enjoyed reading this page in your April issue. „

In his letter Fr. Joe encouraged the "Young Ones to take part in various hobbies, games etc., in order to prevent them becoming bored. Surely the example set by their peers, the two award winners Colm McWeeney (aged 9) of Knockcullen who won a prize in the National Fire Safety Painting Competition recently and John Green (aged 12) of Knocklyon Court, who, being profoundly deaf, won the Child of Achieve-ment Award for his ability to cope so well at an "ordinary" school and who also excels at various sports, will assist our youngsters to forget they ever even heard of the word "bored". .

Looking forward to reading more about Achievers m the "For Young Ones Only" section of the newsletter. "Young at Heart

Dear Editor , . -Over the past several years I have had a copy ol your excellent newsletter delivered to my home each month but have noticed that, on only very few occasions, has there been any input from people of denominations other than Catholic.

Would it not be possible, particularly in these enlightened post-Vatican II times, to invite our Pro-testant neighbours to write articles, furnish parish notices, programmes, etc., to the newsletter for publication on a regular basis. #

Surely, as the newsletter is delivered (uninvited! ) into nearly every home in the parish, to include people of other persuasions in its actual presentation and publication would make sense and indeed, make it more useful and interesting to ALL its recipients. Yours etc.,

(name and address with editor)

May we assure our non Catholic neighbours that any input from them to the Newsletter would be more than welcome at anytime, so here's looking forward! Ed.

BEATING THE CAR THIEF Did you ever have your car broken into or stolen?

If not, wi th the recent increase of thefts in this area you are very lucky. The first thing you notice with a "break-in" is the damaged door lock. Then you

f ind that your stereo and tapes or valuables are gone. If the car is gone, it's inconvenient, but why worry - it is insured. Have you studied

your policy? You may be only covered for the amount that the car was valued at less depreciation. Will this replace it? If you get the car back burnt out you may be covered by Fire Insurance, but if it's damaged and you only have Third Party, Fire and Theft it may not be covered.

Will a claim affect your no claims bonus? I am no expert on insurance but I work in the motor trade and I have seen the damage from car theft. Usually the owner pays.

(a) A Break-in Stereo Unit £220.00 Door Lock or Window £55.00 Radio Surround £55.00 Labour £88.00 Tapes, Camera etc. £80.00

£498.00

Approximate Costs (b) Stolen Car recovered intact

The break-in costs £498.00 Steering Column Cowls £33.00 Steering Shaft £143.00 Steering Lock £88.00 Labour £110.00

£872.00

What can we do? (1) Check if your insurance cover is adequate. (2) Be watchful. If you see anyone acting suspiciously contact the Gardai.

Don't try to confront them yourself. (3) Have a good ultrasonic alarm fitted. There is a lot of junk on the market so be

sure to choose a reliable brand and have it f i t ted by a reputable installer.

J L R AUTO ELECTRICAL LTD. 43 Idrone Drive, Knocklyon

As you are probably .aware the incidence of car theft in this area is on the increase again and a good car alarm is the best way to beat the car thieves. I have tested many makes of car alarms over the past years and I am pleased to be in a position where I can supply high quality reliable systems.

I can offer an Irish made, remote controlled ultrasonic alarm with a high powered siren supplied and f i t ted including V.A.T. for £225.00 or the self powered siren, model for £260 00

After many years as an Auto Electrician and having worked on all aspects of Auto Electrical work, I now specialise in Wiring, Fault Diagnosis, Radios, Car Phones and Alarms etc.

I offer a Mobile Service and I can carry out the work at your home or place of work.

Should you require any further information or clarification about Alarms or any Auto Electrical problem, please do not hesitate to call me.

YOUNG ONES ONLY Hi Everyone,

May is a lovely month isn't it? The days are nice and long so that you can spend more time out playing - that's provided you don't get too much homework! The leaves are back on the trees and they are lovely and fresh and green There is so much going on this month - trials tor the community games - running, swim-ming, variety and on and on. Congratulations to the girls from St. Colmcille's Senior School who got to the Camogie final and to those

C h o i r ^ ^ f ° r t h e N a t i o n a l Children's May is also the month for First Communion

and I want to congratulate all the boys and girls who received their First Holy Communion this month and to compliment them on how well they sang and read during the Mass. I know they all had a lovely day. I am sure all the older girls and boys can remember their Mrst Communion Day. It is so special It is great to dress up specially and to get presents and parties but they are not the really impor-tant things- the most important thing is that Jesus comes to us in a special way to show us how much He loves each one of us - so everv time we receive Holy Communion it is special It is good to talk to Jesus after you receive Communion. You can use prayers from a book or just talk in your own words - He will under-stand what you mean. Tell Him you love Him-ask Him to take care of you and help you' sometimes it's nice to go into the Church when it is quiet and no-one is around to say a short p i ? y e r . t 0 Jesus - it is so peaceful just to be with Him.

Just before I go, do you know why the chicken ran onto the football pitch? Because the ref. blew the whistle for a foul, of course'

Lots of love,

Fr. Joe.

SPORTS STARS A PETITE TASTE OF FRANCE!

L. to R. David, Patrick and Kieran

Congratulations to Kieran Madigan and David Sweeney on their selection to the Dublin Primary Schools Hurling side to play Cork. Well done also to Patrick Healy on being selected for the football team which will also be travelling to play in Cork.

BADMINTON CHAMPIONS Congratulations to Mr. O'Mahoney (Junior School) and Mr. Mc Gowan (Senior School) who recently retained their Mens Doubles title in the National Irish Bank sponsored All Ireland Teachers Badminton Blitz held in Whitehall Road. Mr. Mc Gowan and his partner also won the Mixed Doubles title in the same competition. Some of the "ladies" on the Newsletter committee are fairly competitive in this sport . . . if he ever runs short of a partner!

GOOD FUN(D) When Sheila Ebbs contributed to the recent "People in Need" Fund she had no idea how she would be rewarded! While shopping in the Ilac Centre she purchased a £1 ticket to take part in a draw in aid of the Fund — the prize being a Ford Fiesta car. Two weeks later she received a phone call telling her the car was hers. What a prize! Congratulations Sheila and we wish you safe and happy driving.

T.V. STARS Five boys from the Senior School spent an afternoon in Croke Park recently where they took part in filming for a documentary called "Hurling", sponsored by Kelloggs, which will be shown on R.T.E. during the summer. The five involved were Dayid Corrigan, Kieran Madigan, Kevin Walsh, David Sweeney and Paul Griffin.

Anyone who has ever holidayed in France will rave on and on about the delicious French Patisserie. They will describe in detail the croissants, tarts, quiches, mille feuille and petit fours that they gorged themselves on for their entire holiday. this gap in the Irish confectionery market some years ago and has established his own business, appropriately named "La Petite Patisserie". Paul employs a French pastry Chef named "Laurent" and uses only pure, fresh ingre-dients. Unsalted butter, fresh eggs, fresh fruits and fresh cream are delivered daily to the bakery in Ringsend. Paul rises at 2.00 a.m. as each patisserie product is baked daily to order.

The results are to be seen in the best restau-rants in town — Bewleys, Brown Thomas, The Gresham, to name but a few. There is a magni-ficent refrigerated display of Patisserie in Quinnsworth, Merrion Centre. If you are the horsy type you may have seen the magnificent catering for the V.I.P. Boxes at the Phoenix Park and Leopardstown Race Courses — all freshly produced by La Petite Patisserie. How-ever, Paul will also deliver to your home, business, freezer orders, and he will cater for that special occasion. Can you imagine having real French Croissants — plain, chocolate or almond, seafood Vol-au-Vents, Sausage Rolls, Swan Cream, Religuese, Salambo cakes, Petit Salads, French Shortbread, Eclairs (the list is endless) delivered to • you freshly baked and prepared. Well if you would, contact Paul or his wife Ann who will be only too happy to oblige and obliging they are! Give them a ring at 680505/941641, get a copy of the price list and read it — dream about the taste of France and order! That's all! Then stun your guests and friends!

By the way, pass the word on about La Petite Patisserie — even to those friends who holidayed in France.

SPORTS NEWS CAMOGIE

SENIOR SCHOOL

St. Colmcille's Senior Hurling Team have done very well in their league games and have quali-fied for the semi-final of the competi t ion. They defeated O'Connels Schools, Kilmacud, Francis Street and Star of the Sea, Sandy mount in league games. Excellent displays f rom Donal Convery, Kevin Walsh, Paul Gr i f f in , Derek McCormick and Shane O'Donoghue to name but a few.

The 3rd Class Hurlers and footballers have been very active recently. The footbal l league run by Mr. Angl im, has seen great performances by Padraig Gr i f f in , Colin Moran and Eddie McAuley.

Best players in the 4th class footbal l league run by Mr. McGowan are Patrick Healy, Robert Goodall, Aaron O'Rei l ly, while Julie Grant has been most impressive of the girls. Well done to Peter Cl i f ford who won the "Player of the Year" award for the U.10s 1988/89 in Bally-boden, St. Endas.

The 5th class footbal l league run by Mr. Ruddy has provided some great moments f rom Dominic Byrne, Eoin Fitzgerald, Conor Doyle and Keith Darragh. Nicolq Thorpe, Jenny O'Rei l ly, Aoi fe Gurkey and Cathy Mullan are starring on the female side.

JUNIOR H U R L I N G TEAM

Four consecutive league victories have given our junior hurlers an excellent chance of reach-ing the play-off stages of their competi t ion. Darragh Prendergast, Colin Durkin, Paul Galla-gher and Brian Sheehan nave been to the fore in these games. With two more league games to go, the players realise that an even greater ef for t wi l l be needed to reach the f inal. This

Congratulations to the school camogie team who have got t o the final of the Dublin League. They had a great w in on Wednesday 3rd May in the Hermitage to secure their place in the f inal. Ann Martin, Linda Cusack and Dervla Murphy played extremely well in this match.

The date and venue of the final has not yet been f ixed.

3rd CLASS HURL ING LEAGUE

The boys of the 3rd classes have just completed their second hurling league of the year, run by Mr. Kearney.

Af ter two complete rounds, Waterford met Ant r im and Offaly met Laois in two closely contested semi-finals. Despite the best efforts of Barry Condren for An t r im and Gavin Fleet for Laois, the two favourites Waterford and Offaly made it to the finals.

The final took place on May 11th. Water-ford went in to an early 3 goal lead and despite the valiant attempts of all the Offaly players, but particularly Eoin Keane, Colin Moran, Edward McAuley, Mark Trundle ana Alan Beatty, Offaly never managed to claw back that lead and so Waterford held on for a well deserved victory. Prominent for the winners were John Dunne, Brendan Lehane, David O'Sullivan, Alan Dalton and Kevin Dwan.
