Some of our athletes in action during the cross-country season.

It's great to be back in action after the longest and coldest Spring I can remember. On Sunday 29 April at Santry it was marvellous to see our athletes shake off the cobwebs and start a new season. It all looks very promising. In these Dublin Open Sports we had three athletes reach the podium. These were Karen Tyson (Coolamber) in the U-16 High Jump, Stephen Ryan (Orlagh Park) in the U-13 Sprint and Lisa Barnwell (Greenacre Court) in the U - l l 500m. Over the month of May, we will be competing in the Dublin Juvenile League on successive weeks followed by the Dublin Club Championships on June 9th.

Knocklyon United F.C. HOLLAND TRIP

Knocklyon United recently participated in the Brabant Cup, which took place in Rosmalen, Holland over the Easter week-end. There were up to 40 clubs represented including teams from Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, England, Scotland and Ireland. Knocklyon United had the largest contingent with up to 141 people travelling to Holland. Six teams represented us from U l l to U17 from our DDSL and SDBFL leagues.

The tournament itself was a great success with excellent playing facilities and good accommodation. The level of com-petition and standard was extremely high and all our teams did themselves proud. We are delighted to have had one outright winner, which was the U16's from the DDSL league. They competed against teams from Germany, Holland and England and successfully brought the cup back to Ireland.

The trip itself was well organised with few problems. However, one of our U12 players, Paul Coughlan was disap-pointed, as he pulled his hamstring in the first match. Unfortunately he was unable to play in the rest of the compe-tition and we wish him well. At the end of the tournament the club presented a trophy for the Flayer of the Tournament from each team and I list below the winners. U l l Premier DDSL Paul Young U12 Premier SDBFL Martin Hutchinson U13 Premier SDBFL Kevin Hannigan U15 Major DDSL Aidan Tracey U16B DDSL Paddy Haran U17 A1 DDSL Conor McAteer Well done to all the players as the standard was very high. We

The victorious U-16 team and managers.

also congratulate the managers of the U16's John McNamee and Jace Carey who were successful in winning their cup.

At this point we would like to thank all our sponsors for their support as it allowed the club to be very professional in their approach to the competition.

The club would like to thank managers, parents and players for representing the Knocklyon area to such a high standard and as a result the organisers are eager to have us back. We intend to travel abroad again next year and hope it will be just as successful.

Faith And Light International Pilgrimage - Lourdes 2001

Last month we told you of our plans to take part in the International Faith and Light Pilgrimage to Lourdes over Easter and this month we would like to tell you a little about

the experience. Two other Faith And Light groups, from Clones and

England were staying in our Hotel. On Holy Thursday night we came together for washing of the feet. Over the weekend there were large gatherings in Saint Pius X Basilica for Holy Thursday Eucharist, Celebration of the Passion, and the Easter Vigil. We also had an international gathering on Saturday in the Meadow for Celebration of Reconciliation.

It was so interesting to see groups from all over the world, even as far as Rwanda, Japan, Canada and New Zealand. Every group had their banner to identify themselves.

It was marvellous for our group to spend some time away together, getting to know one another better and sharing our worries, joys and work. It was particularly interesting to have the opportunity to know the children with disabilities better and lovely to experience their enjoyment of the event.

I think we all returned feeling uplifted by the occasion and with warm memories for the future.

Contact and Communications Group saying 'Hello'

Since this group was set up in '94 all of the homes in Knocklyon have been visited on at least one occasion. During these visits new residents have been welcomed and everyone visited has been given the opportunity to express their views and offer suggestions on any aspect of parish life.

Last September this group decided to visit and invite resi-dents in each area to attend a social evening in the new Iona Centre. The idea was that people would be given a chance to meet neighbours over a cuppa, and learn about the various courses and activities being held in the Centre. To date ten estates have been involved in this venture.

As the parish continues to grow we feel the need becomes greater to improve links between the Presbytery and parish-ioners. With this in mind we will endeavour to hold more of these social evenings over the coming months, and hope that by this contact we can promote a better sense of community in Knocklyon.

ROSARY REFLECTIONS . . . The Gospel on its Knees

(New publication on this popular prayer) Devotion to our Blessed Lady through the Rosary, An Paidrin Pair teach, has a very long tradition he re in Ireland. Therefore , anyone w h o decides to take "A fresh look at the Rosary", as Fr. Philip O'Driscoll has done , must be very spiritually brave. It is not an a t tempt to undermine or do away with the tradition-al way of praying the Rosary in public. It is an aid for those w h o may find it m o n o t o n o u s or too reptitive to hold their at tention in private prayer.

T h e t rea tment of the Hail Mary is very interesting. There is a reflection before each mystery. T h e Finding in the Temple evokes "As o n e coin was lost, one s h e e p was lost, o n e son was lost and all were found, so too God is of ten lost in our lives th rough our preoccupat ion with position, possess ions and power. Yet H e can always be found in the t emple of our hear ts when we look for Him in quietness and peace" .

T h e a c c o m p a n y i n g t a p e is s p o k e n by Claire Mullan, Kevin O ' C o n n o r and Fr. O'Driscoll. In s o m e parts the words on the t ape vary f rom those in the booklet. This is d o n e in the interest of fluency in the spoken word.

T h e booklet and t ape are a welcome aid to saying the Rosary in private in this far too busy world in which we live. T h e black and white pictures are very inspirational. They greatly e n h a n c e the prayerful reflections and the grace requested in each mystery.

Price £5 . Available in the Parish shop .

Said And Done!

fl

p p s Over the years we have featured a number of writ-ers and their work in the Newsletter. The latest author to come to our notice is a young lady who has made Knocklyon her home after growing up in England.

Annie Sparrow always wanted to write and until recently song lyrics and poetry were her speciality. Annie dreamed of becoming a full-time writer, and this dream became a reality when, three years ago she gave up the "day job", joined her parents who had retired, and come to live in Castlefield.

She got to work and now after some time Annie's first novel, 'Said And Done' is about to be launched by Townhouse Publishers. She has signed a two-book contract and is already halfway through writ-ing her second novel.

As a diversion from her laptop Annie joined Knocklyon Variety Group as a singer and dancer and was part of last year's production of 'Guys And Dolls'.

When we spoke to Annie she was looking for-ward to seeing her work displayed on the shelves of bookshops all over Ireland - and England.

'Said And Done' is the story of a legal secretary who is based in Manchester, and who is sent to Dublin to help open a new office. The new discov-eries which take place in her life are brought alive by Annie's powerful use of dialogue and her ability to bring the reader into the story.

We wish Annie every success with her book, and look forward to hearing more about this "fresh new voice in women's fiction".

Kilkenny star, DJ Carey with pupils of St. Colmcille's Senior School, during his recent visit.

Our pupils did not have to be called a second time from their beds on the morning of 5th April. Why not? Because all of them were excited in anticipation of the visit of Kilkenny hurling legend, D.J. Carey to the school.

All week pupils and teachers busily prepared for the visit. Artwork, poems and dramatic presentations were all prepared. One of the teachers, Mrs. O'Gara, organ-ised a display of black and amber cats and kittens (of the furry variety) which were displayed in the main foyer of the school.

Pupils busily looked up the internet in search of facts about DJ. Competitions were organised and pupils entered these competitions hoping to win one of the prizes donated by Ballyboden St. Enda's GAA club, and Barry Gavin of the Dublin County Board.

The day itself was a huge success as D.J. met all 800 pupils in various assemblies and took to the field with our hurling and camogie panels.

Pupils were invited to wear a county jersey of their choice and the school classrooms featured the jerseys of many counties. Staff, pupils and parents would all like to thank D.J. for the courtesy, patience and good humour he showed throughout the day. Many thanks to Mr. Murphy, Mr. Ryan and Mr. Ruddy who co-ordinated the day's programme.

Mile bufochas do Tom Fitzpatrick (Cumann na mBunscoil), Gerry O'Sullivan and John Hayes (Ballyboden St. Endas) and Barry Gavin (Dublin Co.

Board) who joined us on the day of D.J.'s visit.

F A M O U S P A S T P U P I L S Well known current intercounty players who began their Gaelic Games career in St. Colmcille's, Knocklyon include current Dublin Senior Football star, Colin Moran and midfielder on the Dublin Senior Hurling team David Sweeney.

C O L L E G E H E R O E S Conal Keaney, captain of the Dublin Colleges' Hurling Team who recently won the Leinster Colleges' final is also a past pupil of ours. Conal visited the school with the cup along with past pupils Stephen Fee and Tim Sweeney who are also members of the Dublin Colleges squad.

C U R R E N T T E A M S St. Colmcille's S.N.S. Knocklyon are the current hold-ers of the Corn Kitterick (Dublin U13 Div. 1 Football) and the school's camogie team are current holders of the Corn Bn. Ui Phuirseil (U13 Division 1 Camogie).

D U B L I N M I N O R H U R L I N G M A N A G E R Mr. John Murphy, our Head of Sport, is currently the Dublin Minor Hurling Manager. John is a former Dublin Senior hurler and plays for Crumlin.

O T H E R S P O R T N E W S Inter-school activities have been delayed due to Foot and Mouth fears, but we have been able to continue with preparations and activities on Idrone Green. Mr. Ryan and Mr. O'Neill have been working with our Junior and Senior hurling panels. Mr. Sweeney and Ms. Martin have overseen preparations with our two camogie panels while there has been a super response in third class to the commencement of coaching with Ms. Ni Reachtabhra, Ms. Martin and Mr. Murphy. Ms. Martin's and Ms. Nf Reachtabhra's Third Classes played in the Cumann na mBunscoil indoor hurling/camogie blitz.

Basketball, swimming, Irish dancing and rugby coaching are also continuing as part of our P.E. Curriculum.

Therese de Lisieux - Sainte Extraordinaire!

How does o n e explain the e n o r m o u s spread of devotion to Therese of Lisieux, following so quickly on her death and still very much alive and well as current events clearly show? H o w have so many people, not only in Ireland but worldwide, c o m e to empathise with a young contemplat ive nun living such a short and unspectacular life behind the walls of a little known Carmeli te Convent? The ultimate, answer, I believe, lies in the power of her message, with the intervention of God to authenticate it.

On the m o r e immediate level, one looks to two principal p h e n o m e n a :

The Autobiography The ' S t o r y Of A Soul' began life without a hint of its future destiny. It consisted of (i) a copy book containing childhood and early memories that The rese wrote at the request of her sister, Pauline, prioress of the Convent at the time: (ii) two letters written to her eldest sister, Marie, w h o had asked her "to put in writing her little doctrine as I called it" and (iii) a third unfinished manuscr ipt which the then Prioress, Mother Gonzague , asked her to write on the t h e m e of her religious life, just four mon ths before she died.

Therese, w h o had written what she did in a most detached spirit, b e c a m e gradually aware that her writings would b e c o m e important . S h e told her sister Pauline, two mon ths before she died to be careful in speaking about it, lest its publication be hindered. H o w unlikely this would have appea red , at the t ime and yet h o w the reality outstr ipped all expectations! Let us listen to 'Fr. Chris O 'Donnel l ('Love In T h e Hear t Of T h e Church, 1997 ' ) .

" T h e Story Of A Soul' was to prove enormously popular. Within a year the initial edition was sold out and a second edition of four thousand copies was issued in 1899. Within seven years it had appeared in English, Polish, Dutch, Italian and Portuguese. In one year alone (1910), the Carmel received 9 ,741 letters. By 1913 it was getting two hundred letters daily, and the autobiography was now available in Spanish and Japanese."

Therese ' s cause was introduced. "Pope Benedict XV signed the formal decree about Therese's heroic virtue and spoke on her spirituality in August 1912. In the twenty-four years since her death, there had been an explosion of interest, veneration and prayer at the grassroots level of the Church."

"This movement of popular enthusiasm would lead to

Therese's beatification and canonisation, to Pius XI naming her Patroness of the Missions equal in rank with St. Francis Xavier (1927) . . . to Pius XII naming her secondary patron of France on a par with St. Joan of Arc (1944). . . . By 1976 the title of basilica was given by the Holy See to five churches dedicated to her, including one at Lisieux (1937). To this can be added innumerable

churches named in her honour throughout the world, and the presence of statues and

shrines in countless other churches. All this is a reflection of the devotion of

the entire Church." In 1 9 9 8 , Pope John Paul II, in declaring her

"Daughter of the Church99 quoted Pope Benedict XV who described her "Li t t l e Way" as containing "the secret of sanctity for the entire world99.

The Shower of Roses Here , again, let us listen to

Fr. Chris O'Donnel l : "Therese herself had some

inkling of her future destiny. We have already seen her care about

her autobiography. In her last words, which began to be recorded from the

April before her death, we have two of her most famous statements. When her eldest sister,

Marie of the Sacred Heart, spoke of the sorrow they would have when she died, she replied: "Oh no, you will see; it will be like a shower of roses," and then she added, " A f t e r my death you will go to the mail-box and you will find many consolations." A few weeks later she said to Celine, "J want to spend my heaven doing good on earth."

On the Feast of the Holy Cross just a fortnight before she died Therese was given a rose. She removed the petals one by one and pressed each to the wounds on the crucifix. When she noticed that the petals were slipping from her bed to the floor Mother Agnes states that she said very seriously, "Gather up these petals, little sisters, they will help you to perform favours later on. . . . Don't lose any of them." The huge number of letters received by the Lisieux convent gave ample evidence that the shower of roses foreseen by Therese became a reality. In the early years they began to publish 'Pluie De Roses' (Shower Of Roses, 1907-1925) - seven volumes testifying to favours received."

He re in Knocklyon, through the visit of the Relics of St. Therese , the grace of God has again been offered us and will have touched many souls. May the love of God that filled the hear t of St. The rese revitalise our hearts , and may we, too, be able to extend that love to others .

- Fr. David

Pilgrimage of Grace reaches Knocklyon

It was just after 1 p.m. when I arrived at St. Colmcille's Church. It was a perfect May day. The sun blazed down from a cloudless sky on the wait-ing crowd that had already gathered there. The whole place was a hive of activity. Several stands had been erected to facilitate the Official Flower Sellers (Parish Helpers) who were busy selling roses, the flower so closely associated with St. Therese. The roses made a wonderful splash of colour and were in great demand. Soon they would be blessed and their petals would become treasured memories of this momentous day when the Relics of the "Little Flower of Jesus" were brought to Knocklyon.

The crowd grew bigger by the minute and there was a distinct buzz of excitement and anticipation. The Scouts, boys, girls and their Leaders were impressive in their uniforms as they lined up on both sides of the path leading up to the main entrance to the Church. Then, in the distance we heard the sound of Garda motor cycles, the out-riders for the Theresemobile which suddenly came into view and stopped at the bottom of the path. Silence fell on the crowd as the doors of the Theresemobile were opened and the Reliquary was removed, carried into the Church and placed in front of the altar. The Scouts followed, leading the procession of people inside. Soon the Church was full and the congregation was welcomed by Fr. David and other members of the Carmelite team.

The Service of Welcome began, the first of many services that would follow that day and the follow-ing morning. Silence fell once more on the congre-gation as they, no doubt were touched by the scene around them, a wonderful feeling of togetherness -listening to the readings and the Choir - so many people at one with Christ.

At the end of this service, the Stewards directed the -congregation to access the Reliquary when everyone could touch the glass and offer their private prayers. Many also visited the shrine of St. Therese. It was quite beautiful. The statue was surrounded by hundreds of roses and in their midst a small statue of the Child Jesus.

Three Masses followed that evening. During the afternoon the Children's Choir had participated in a short service while veneration of the Relics proceeded. The 9p.m. Mass was a special Mass for Healing and Anointing the Sick. The midnight Mass, preceded the all-night vigil.

The following day, Sunday May 6th, Masses began at 8 a.m., another followed at 9.30 and at 11.10 the special televised Mass went out on RTE1 network, live. The Kairos crew had been busy over the previous days setting up cameras and micro-phones for this TV broadcast. Once more the Church was filled to overflowing. One could not.but

feel a huge debt of gratitude to the very many peo-ple whose combined efforts and co-operative spirit made this a visit to remember. The whole weekend was a real exercise in community action - clergy and laity working together for a common goal. The Carmelite ethos which has been nurtured in the Parish over many years has helped build a caring community spirit, one which we can only hope will be like the "Little Flower" - a rose that never dies.

Our thanks as a community must go to all the workers who gave their time and energy to make this visit such a success. The Steering Committee did an excellent job, and several groups deserve special mention. One anonymous group, who never seek publicity - the Church Cleaners - as ever had the Church building gleaming after the decorators. St. Therese must have been pleased with their work - and - I am assured that they don't splash 'dirty water' at each other!

The flower arrangers also merit a word, as they surpassed themselves with their beautiful arrange-ments which made the altar and shrines so attrac-tive for this wonderful occasion.

It is said that "the last shall be first" . . . perhaps that is why I have kept the combined choirs until last to mention. They were stupendous. The selection of music played, and the rendering of so many hymns really touched the heart. Compliments must also go to our young people who performed the . mime accompaniment to the specially composed song "To Those Who Are Little" at the televised Mass. Their simplicity and gracefulness was very edifying.

The availability of the 'Iona Centre' as a meeting point and stop for refreshments was most welcome, and thanks is also due to all who assisted there. I also think we must thank the Lord and St. Therese for giving us the opportunity of a television memo-ry of this visit. I'm sure there must have been hun-dreds of video tapes plugged into recorders in Knocklyon households for the TV -Mass. I feel St. Therese would be happy about that. This video undoubtedly will be played many times for relatives and friends, and even copies made for relatives abroad. I can't think of a better way of spreading the "Good News". Can you?

Of course, all good things must come to an end. I for one, felt quite sad, when after the final Mass we waited outside for the departure of the Relics. The Reliquary was carried out of St. Colmcille's Church and once again placed gently in the Theresemobile and driven away. Our Little Saint was gone from us, but the memory of her visit will be with us all forever.

LOCAL ROAD A N D TRAFFIC MATTERS - PROGRESS

REPORT C o u r t e s y S e n a t o r Cl lr . A n n e O r m o n d e

P e d e s t r i a n C r o s s i n g a t t h e E s s o G a r a g e o n t h e K n o c k l y o n R o a d Pedestrian facilities have been provided at the traffic lights at the Scholarstown Roundabout to accommodate the adjoining school. Further to a meeting of the Traffic Study Group a count was recommended in the vicinity of the Esso Garage on the Knocklyon Road. This count is on the Programme of Works and is expected to be carried out before Summer 2001.

S i g n a g e f o r K n o c k l y o n a n d P e r i p h e r a l t o M 5 0 ? Arising from a meeting with the Resident Engineer for the Southern Cross Route and having regard to the representations received, a revised signage programme for the M50/Southern Cross Route has been forwarded to the Resident Engineer for consideration in association with the Southern Cross Route Works.

T h e L e f t H a n d T u r n a t t h e K n o c k l y o n R o a d / F i r h o u s e R o a d J u n c t i o n This matter will be examined by the Traffic Section in conjunction with the Gardai and the report will be sent to the Traffic Study Group for its recommendations. Knocklyon Road is not scheduled for major improvement work until 2003 in accordance with the Council's 5-year programme. However some improvement works are scheduled in the current year at the 'Riding Stables'. The Council has acquired lands at this location to enable a footpath to be provided.

The sum of £381,000 has already been spent on preliminary work for Knocklyon Road Realignment.

T h e S p a w e l l B r i d g e This bridge serves as an asset to the Knocklyon area, and provides another exit point to N81. Until the Southern Cross Route is in place (later in the year) some extra traffic may be generated, but there is very little housing fronting onto Knocklyon Road. Representations for traffic calming have been made to the County Council.

A CONCERT WITH A DIFFERENCE

Friday 30th March marked a special occasion for our Parish when members of Knocklyon Community came together to support and partici-pate in an event for the benefit of another com-munity - geographically very distant, but very close to our hearts. That community is comprised of the men, women and children served by the Carmelite 'Regina Coeli' Mission in Zimbabwe.

The event was "Imba Kutamba" - an evening of music, song and poetry, held in the Church and co-hosted with great aplomb by Parishioners (and celebrities) Mary Kennedy and Seamus Moran. The evening proved to be a great success due to the tremendous display of talent from all the perform-ers.

The various choirs from our schools and Church gave beautiful renditions of their respective reper-toires. The "visitors" from the next parish (Firhouse) - Blue Heaven Barbershop Chorus were a real hit and looked great too! The poetry recitals lent a lovely balance to the evening's programme, while the Comhaltas group were a welcome reminder of the timeless haunting beauty of our traditional music. A deeply moving atmosphere was created by the mime presentation of "Redemption" by the pupils of Sixth Class. The extract from the musical "Joseph" by students of our Community school showed great skill, energy, colour and musical ability. You could have heard the proverbial "pin drop" during the two duet per-formances from Joyce and Bernie and Ruth and Emily. One group who undoubtedly gained a whole new following after their performance was the Gospel Choir. But who can forget the Hallelujah Chorus under the baton of Eoin Garrett which sounded magnificent and sent spirits soaring. The final slot of the evening was occupied by Knocklyon Concert Band with a rousing repertoire - and theirs was the honour of playing the finale -the sound was incredible as their standing ovation conveyed. "Well Done" to everyone involved in providing a terrific night's entertainment.

The Annual General Meeting of the Knocklyon Community Council took place on Tuesday, April 24th, at 8.30 p.m. We were joined on the night by Minister Tom Kitt, Olivia Mitchell TD, Senator Ann Ormonde, Cathoirleach Stanley Laing and Councillors John Lahart and Cait Keane.

The Chairman welcomed our guests and presented the Chairman's report which focused on the fol lowing: • The lack of public transport for Knocklyon in the long term plans for

South Dublin. While every other area seemed to be included in plans for the Luas and Metro lines, Knocklyon would appear to have been overlooked.

• The increasing need for realignment of the Knocklyon Road. • Welcoming the opening of the new Post Primary school with sincere

appreciation expressed on behalf of the community, to Dr. Vincent Kenny and the Post Primary School committee.

• A plea to SDCC to withdraw plans to increase the size of the Cherryfield halting site.

• The need for the parents of Knocklyon youth to be more involved and become more aware of the activities in which our children are involved.

• Thanks to Theresa Clarke and J im Sadlier, elected to South Dublin County Development working groups, and to Corr. Sec. Denise Murphy for work done during the past year.

P L A N N I N G Bill Meagher outlined the work undertaken by the KCC related to the Ballycullen Oldcourt Area Action Plan, the monitor ing the Southern Cross Route Motorway and the representations made with regard to Knocklyon Gate apartments. The issue to hand at present surrounds the development of 636 dwell ings on the western side of the Ballycullen road south of Woodstown Village. The KCC have prepared and submit-ted a comprehensive comment on these plans. The issue has not yet been addressed by SDCC.

The matter of the Eircell mast at Landy's is a continuing concern and the KCC has made a commitment to fol low through with our objection to the mast's existence with a view to having it removed permanently.

Realignment of the Knocklyon Road will require the dedication of the local council lors.

E N V I R O N M E N T Theresa Clarke thanked the Environment Dept of SDCC for their contin-ued co-operation with the KCC. She also thanked the Chairman David Hickey, Minutes Secretary Aileen Millane and Corr. Sec. Denise Murphy for their support. Theresa outlined the progress made throughout the year with emphasis on the Annual Clean-Up Day, the environmental questionnaire and Keep Knocklyon Tidy signage.

S P O R T S Jim Mulkerrin reported on the activities of the three sporting bodies with representation on the KCC. He congratulated one and all for the achieve-ments of the past year. Despite poor attendance of parents at 2 AGM's hosted for the Community Games, the dedicated few have decided to go ahead with the games.

E D U C A T I O N Vincent Kenny outlined the developments with the new school, thanking specif ical ly Sen. Ann Ormonde for her work on the Board of Management. He appealed to An Cathoirleach to facilitate council lors who wish to serve on'the board in whatever way he can.

P O L I C I N G Peter Shovlin and Colm Duggan submitted a report out l ining meetings with Community Garda Niall Brophy in November and Inspector Dolan in March of this year. The former was called as an information meeting and the latter occurred as a result of a letter of complaint f rom the KCC to Minister O'Donoghue regard-

ing lack of manpower generally in the South Dublin area.

E L E C T I O N An election of independent members was deemed unnecessary as eight candidates were running for eight seats. The fol lowing candidates were appointed as independents: Michael Brennan, Aiden Nevin, John Connery, David Hickey, Peter Shovlin, Colm Duggan, Aileen Millane, Pat Blaney.

Election of Auditor - in absentia Martin Nolan was thanked for his contr ibution to the work of the KCC and re-elected as Auditor subject to his agreement.

E N V I R O N M E N T A L A W A R D S The Community Council extended its congratulations to the fol lowing, as Theresa Clarke made the presentation of Environmental Awards: Castlefield Residents Association - Knocklyon Community Council Award; Beverly Residents Association - Mary Muldoon Award.

R E - A L I G N M E N T O F K N O C K L Y O N R O A D An extensive discussion took place on the lack of action with regard to the realignment of the Knocklyon Road. Local Councillors were ques-tioned as to why, having had the item on a total of 5 Five-Year Plans, no progress has been made. One Lansdowne resident highlighted the fact that, when he queried the issue with SDCC recently, he received the same reply verbatim, to the reply he received on the identical query 15 years ago! That there was no money in the budget. Olivia Mitchell stat-ed that the drawings for the realignment of the Knocklyon Road were officially submitted to the Department of the Environment as an urgent case that afternoon. The issue was debated at length with contributions also f rom Stanley Laing, Cait Keane, Ann Ormonde and members of the community. John Lahart recommended that the KCC use the realign-ment as an election issue. He stated that resurfacing had been budget-ed for, this was not received well as it was seen to be a concept which could ultimately delay the necessary work.

C H E R R Y F I E L D H A L T I N G S I T E On the subject of the expansion of Cherryfield Halting site, Olivia Mitchell stated that the expansion would appear to be going ahead with an increase of 5 families at a cost of £250,000 per family. A member of the communi ty requested a detailed breakdown of what was involved in the costings for both this site and the reported £405,000 per family in the Ballyboden site.

A N T I - S O C I A L B E H A V I O U R John Lahart stated that the new bye-laws governing underage drinking and anti-social behaviour wil l be put in place in the very near future, giv-ing Gardai the power to detain youngsters guilty of either offence until parents can collect them at the station.

The Chairman thanked all for attending and closed the meeting at 11 p.m. The next meeting of the Community Council wil l take place in the Community Centre at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. May 29th.

Life After School -And Beyond

When we featured Kevin Collins in the Newsletter in May 1993 he was living at home in Templeroan and was in his third year studying Civil Law at UCD. We were keen to know how Kevin's studies progressed and we asked him recently to give us an update of his life since then.

Studying law can be a long process, but Kevin qualified two years ago and was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors. He began his professional practice with a small firm con-centrating on property law and commercial law. During that time his work offered exciting challenges including "buying houses for exhorbitant sums and selling aircraft engines in micl-air over the Atlantic"!

Kevin recently joined a large firm of solicitors and is currently working in their property department. His per-sonal lifestyle has changed too in recent years. He and his girlfriend (of four years) Theresa were married last year and they now live in their new home in Lucan.

Before moving f rom Knocklyon, both Kevin and Theresa were very involved with the local Scout unit. Most of their free time these days is spent on DIY jobs

around the house and gardening. They are fortunate to have tennis courts around the corner and they do manage the occasional game.

Kevin shared with us his most recent news - himself and Theresa are looking forward to a new addition to the family in October. We send them both our warmest wish-es for their future together, and wish Kevin every success in his chosen career.

OOL NEWS • JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS • JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS • J S u m m e r T e r m

The main focus of work in Second Class during May will be the First Holy Communions on three successive Sundays, 13th, 20th and 27th. All six classes have prepared very well before receiving the sacrament. Over two hundred pupils went to First Confession during three evenings in March, when the teachers, parents and priests oversaw beautiful ceremonies. At the other levels of the school we are looking forward to an exciting last term. Many classes will enjoy tours or field trips in June.

S c h o o l R e n o v a t i o n s As there will be extensive renovations of the school during July and August it will be necessary to distribute uniforms and books for next year before the summer holidays. The school will be out of bounds for the two Summer months due to the construction work. It now looks likely that this situation will pertain for the next few summers, as the Department of Education and Science has indicated that it will provide funding for additional facilities at the school in the coming year or two.

S u m m e r C a m p Mr. Padraig Carney has organised a two week Summer Camp which will be held in early July. Parents wishing to enrol chil-dren for the Camp should contact Mr. Carney. The Camp was a great success last year and promises many exciting activities this year again.

E n r o l m e n t The places in the incoming Junior Infant Classes have been filled. Parents of children on the waiting list have been offered places for the following year. Parents who wish to enrol chil-dren in a higher class - Senior Infants, First or Second are advised to apply immediately as there are few vacancies in these classes.

S p o r t s The G.A.A. Summer season has begun. Mr. Sweeney and Ms. Cosgrave will coach Hurling and Camogie while Mr. Boyle and Mr. Carney will coach Boys and Girls Gaelic Football. A large number of second class pupils have declared interest in the native games. D.J. Carey's visit to the school was very well received by our pupils and will undoubtedly help the promotion of Hurling.

R e g i n a C o e l i C o n c e r t Over 90 First Class pupils, tutored by Ms. A. Lawless, Ms. R. O'Conor and Ms. P. Connell, sang at the concert in Aid of the

Regina Coeli Mission. The children really enjoyed the experi-ence, as indeed did the large audience.

E a s t e r E g g s The school's inaugural entry to the Easter Egg Competit ion at Nutgrove Shopping Centre was very well received by the general public. Our eight huge Easter Eggs, which were decorated by lots of different classes, were on display in Nutgrove for two weeks. Mr. Sweeney and Mrs. Johnston's second classes won special commendations from the adjudicators.

Senator Ann Ormonde, John Boyle (Principal, St. Colmcille's Junior School) and Minister Seam us Brennan, examining plans for the renovations at the Junior School.

V i s i t b y L o c a l R e p r e s e n t a t i v e s Government Chief Whip Seamus Brennan and Senate Education Spokesperson Ann Ormonde visited the school in late March. Both politicians pledged their support for the joint application to upgrade the Junior and Senior schools. The school buildings have catered for a huge student population over the last twenty years and are now beginning to show the signs of wear and tear. Mr. O'Neill and Mr. Boyle expressed sincere gratitude to Minister Brennan, who has been very helpful to date. The Department of Education and Science will survey both schools with a view to providing more modern facilities for pupils and teachers. As mentioned earlier, substantial works will be carried out at the older Junior School building this summer.

Unemployed, Senior Citizens) Box Office: 462 7477

Director: Andrew Reddy Choreographer: Deirdre Lumsden

Musical Director: Colin Sloan The show is a musical comedy based on the Gilbert & Sullivan opera "The Mikado", but the music has been updated, and the style is now blues/swing/gospel. Anybody familiar with the original opera will recognise the music but the show has a much more modern sound. This colourful show is certain to provide the ideal evening out for the whole family. Watch out for some familiar faces from Knocklyon Variety Group who are taking part in this production. We wish them every success.

"OLIVER" - A TOUR DE FORCE Many congratulations to the cast of the musical "Oliver" recently produced by Templeogue College Dramatic Society in association with pupils f r o m O u r Lady 's Templeogue , Presentation Terenure, and St. Patrick's Cathedral G r a m m a r School.

The show ran for three nights to full houses, and on the final night when we at tended there was a terrific a tmosphe re among both cast and audience.

From start to finish this was a very polished and most enjoy-able pe r fo rmance . T h e sets were excellent, the acting and singing very professional, the choreography wonderful and orchestration beautiful.

We spotted many familiar Knocklyon faces in the cast -Aoife Doyle (Mrs. Sowerberry) was very creditable as were the many past pupils of St. Colmcille's who played parts as mem-bers of Fagin's gang. Parishioner Kevin O'Brien acted as Assistant Director to Colm Eaton . -Another Knocklyoner with a big part to play in this show was Ann Mclntyre w h o was Choreographer . Well d o n e to everyone.
