Theme:

The theme of the unit is based on the idea of trying to achieve the ‘American Dream’. The play is about the Younger family, an African-American family. There are five main characters in the family. All the characters have their own idea about what the American dream is. Another theme that can be considered throughout the play is racism. Students will see how racism was an issue in the 1950’s. Students will be able to make connections from the 1950’s to today. Students will be developing their own ideas about the American dream throughout reading the play. They will discover what the Younger family’s dreams are throughout the play. This was an important time in history and students will see how times have changed. This unit ties in with the unit Imagination and Childhood and the unit on Journey because the Younger family is on a journey in the play. They must do things to achieve their dreams, and the students will be able to make connections because they are on their own journeys in life.

Assessment:

-Character Chart

The vocabulary lists will help students enrich their own vocabulary and will also help them to define words in the play. Students will be practicing their vocabulary skills throughout reading the play. The vocabulary lists will be marked out of 5. Students will be given a 5 if they complete all the words. For example if students complete 60% of the words they will be given 3 out of 5.

The quizzes will show what students know about the play and whether or not they can make the necessary connections. This is an area that will emphasize students reading and listening skills throughout reading the play. The quizzes will consist of multiple choice questions, matching and short answer. All the quizzes will be work 20 marks each.

The character chart will be given to students so they can learn more about the characters. This is important for the students because they need to know about the characters, their traits and what their dreams/goals are in the play. The characters play a huge role in the play so students will be able to develop a better understanding of them by completing this chart. The chart will be worth 20 marks.

‘A Dream Deferred’ by Langston Hughes Audio Version

Overview:

1. Take attendance2. Hand out introduction activity (See Appendix A) and have students fill it out and hand it

back in to me3. Hand out Unit overview and Expectations sheet (See Appendix B) –Ties in with picture

book unit4. Introduce play A Raisin in the Sun: Tell students that we will be reading the play on

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays as a class. There will be a couple unit quizzes about the play, a character activity and vocabulary activities. A Raisin in the Sun was set in the 1950’s era. I am going to introduce the play by playing some music from the 1950’s.

While the music is playing I want you to think about what our music is like today compared to what it was like then. 5. I will play Call Me-Blondie because that was the #1 hit song during the late 80’s/early 90’s when the majority of the students were born.

6. Have discussion about songs7. Hand out A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry to the students8. Introduce Author Lorraine Hansberry: She was an African American playwright and

author of political speeches, letters and essays. The play A Raisin in the Sun was inspired by her family’s legal battle against racially segregated housing laws in the Washington Park Subdivision of the South Side of Chicago during her childhood. Lorraine was the daughter of Carl and Nannie Hansberry. She grew up in a successful black family where both of her parents were political activists. A Raisin in the Sun was the first play written by a Black woman to be produced on Broadway, and was also the first play with a black director who was Lloyd Richards.

9. Ask students if they have any questions so far? If not have students turn to the beginning of the play to the poem ‘A Dream Deferred’ by Langston Hughes (See Appendix C).

10. Introduce Langston Hughes: He was born in 1902 in Missouri. His parents divorced when he was a young child so he was raised by his Grandmother. He started writing poetry at a young age and his poems focused on black life in American from the twenties through the sixties. He had said that he wanted to tell the stories of his people in ways that reflected their actual culture including both their suffering and their love of music, laughter and language itself.

11. Play the poem on audio of Langston Hughes reading it12. Discuss the poem together as a class13. Write on board: Like a raisin in the sun- Raisins are already dry, but if they are left out in

the sun they become hard and impossible to eat. Dreams dry up to?14. Ask students, ‘What is the American Dream?’ and record answers up on the board. When

we talk about the American Dream what do we mean? What are some of the obstacles to achieving the American Dream? What do people from other countries immigrate to North America?

15. Tell students the setting of the play: set in Chicago’s Southside sometime between World War II and the present
