SASk. dRivERS STill TAlkiNg ANd TExTiNg WhilE dRiviNgctv.ca - A new independent poll suggests that people in Saskatchewan aren’t heeding the law that makes using a cellphone while driv-ing illegal. More than sixty per cent of respondents said they saw at least one person driving and texting or talking on a cell phone every day. Only two per cent of people polled said they never see people using their phones while driving. despite the fact that people claim to see a lot of illegal cell phone use, only a handful of people admitted it in the poll. Fifty-one per cent of respondents said they never use
their phone illegally to talk on the phone while driving, 26 per cent said they’ve done so “only a handful of times,” and only 21 per cent said they do so on a regular basis. As for texting and driving, 61 per cent of respondents said they never do it, and 39 per cent said they’ve only texted while driving “a handful of times”. The numbers in this year’s poll are similar to a poll done in September 2009 that sug-gested younger drivers are more likely to text while driving than older drivers. despite the fact that the numbers show people commonly participate in illegal cell-phone use while driving, only one per cent of respondents knew fine for such behavior was $280.

YpRECORD RETAIL SALES LEAD THE NATIONgov.ca - Saskatchewan’s retail sales to-taled $1.6 billion in May 2013, the highest ever for the month of May and an increase of 5.0 per cent (seasonally adjusted) from the previous month. This is the highest percentage in-crease in Canada, according to a Statis-tics Canada report released today. “Saskatchewan’s growing econo-my, rising consumer confidence and positive job market have contributed to record-level retail sales,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said. “it’s clear why we’re seeing this increase. Job numbers
are up, wages are up, and there’s more money for shoppers to spend which is good news for the province’s retailers.” On a yearly basis, Saskatchewan is up 5.9 per cent (seasonally adjusted) when compared with May of 2012 -- the second highest increase among the provinces. “Saskatchewan’s robust job market will continue to produce significant gains on the retail front,” Boyd said. “This strong momentum will continue to position our province as a national economic leader as we move toward the end of 2013.”

Three old ladies are sitting in a diner, chatting about vari-ous things.
One lady says, “You know, I’m getting really forgetful. This morning, I was standing at the top of the stairs, and I couldn’t remember whether I had just come up or was about to go down.”
The second lady says, “You think that’s bad? The other day, I was sitting on the edge of my bed and I couldn’t remember whether I was going to sleep or had just woken up!”
The third lady smiles smugly, “Well, my memory is just as good as it’s always been, knock on wood,” she says as she raps on the table. Then with a startled look on her face, she asks, “Who’s there?”

Homemade iced sweet teaIngredients:
• 3 tea bags (good quality Black Tea, Orange Pekoe or try a green Tea or any other tea you like)• 4 cups of water• 1/2 to 1 cup sugar• (optional) 1/2 lemon, thinly sliced
Instructions: • Bring water to a boil in a saucepan. Once it reaches the boil, remove from heat, add the tea bags, cover and let steep for 5 minutes.• Remove and discard the tea bags. Pour tea into a heat-proof glass pitcher. While tea is still hot, add sugar to taste (or omit if you prefer unsweetened tea). Stir to dissolve sugar. Place pitcher in the refrigerator.• if adding lemon, slice one half of a lemon into thin slices. Add lemon slices to the pitcher. Refrigerate at least until cool. Serve over ice and enjoy!• This recipe makes a small batch, so if you like iced tea, i’d suggest doubling the recipe.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - JuLY 24TH1988: Nine-year-old flying ace soars into history under a sunny, blue sky, Emma Houlston lands her fam-ily’s single-engine plane in St. John’s, N.L. Despite a shaky landing, the touchdown means the nine-year-old makes history as the youngest person to pilot a plane across Can-ada. Her flight took off two weeks prior, from Victoria, B.C. Emma is accompanied by her father, a licensed pilot, who is on board to lend moral support. A video camera inside the plane verifies that Emma is in fact doing all the flying -- solo. For the nine-year-old who got her first taste of flight at age six, it’s all part of a great summer vacation. At the end of the historic flight, Emma talks about her reluctance to fly back home to Medicine Hat, Alta. She will be a passenger on that leg of the journey, and it turns out Emma gets motion sickness when she’s not piloting the plane.
• Emma, accompanied by her father, made the record-break-ing flight in a single-engine Grumman aircraft.• To prepare for the flight, Emma and her father trained for eight months leading up to the coast-to-coast air odyssey.• She flew an average of three hours a day on her two week trip. • The distance from Victoria, B.C., to St. John’s, N.L., is 5,097 kilometres, or 2,752 nautical miles. • The publishers of the Guinness Book of Records elimi-nated the “youngest pilot” category from the book because they did not want to encourage unsafe flights.• Emma’s family suffered backlash from those who believed her to be too young to attempt such a feat.
Also on July 24:• 1958: The national CCF convention in Winnipeg accepts a Canadian Labour Congress proposal to found a “people’s political movement.” The New Democratic Party comes into being in 1961.• 1984: Federal party leaders John Turner, Brian Mulroney and Ed Broadbent meet in the first tele-vised election debate conducted in French.

DON’T GET MOWED DOWN: HOW TO AVOID LAWN
MOWER INJuRIES For some Canadians, mowing the lawn is a pleasant summer activity… the fresh sunny air, the aroma of cut grass and the satisfaction of getting a chore done with a side helping of exercise. This all remains true, if safety pre-cautions are taken and safety measures are in place. Too many have suffered needlessly over a split second miscalculation while using a lawn mower. Take Chris for example. Chris was using his walk-behind lawn mower for trimming the grass in the imposing ditch at the end of his front lawn property. last sum-mer, while standing in the ditch and guiding his mower up and down the embankment, Chris lost his footing and saw his foot disap-pear under the mower, directly into the spin-ning blades. One instance of mishap lead to months of recuperation and healing, includ-ing skin graphs from his thigh and a long bat-tle of fighting infection. Chris was lucky, in that he did not lose a portion of his foot. lacerations (32 per cent) and amputations (16 per cent) account for most of the injuries involving lawn mow-ers according to data collected by Canadian hospitals injury Reporting and Prevention Program (ChiRPP). A total of 1161 patients with 1451 injuries presented between 14 and 16 hospitals across Canada, between 1990 and 2006. Overall, the most common injuries in-volved someone slipping or tripping under a mower (23 per cent).
Especially shocking is that a total of 48 per cent of the patients were 15 years old and younger. This is a high number considering that children should not even be in the yard when it is being mowed. For patients under 1 year old, nearly 70 per cent of injuries were burns occurring when the child touched the hot lawnmower engine or muffler. For pa-tients under 15 years old, the burns and am-putations rates increased. Sadly, there have been cases of youngsters suffering permanent debilitating injuries from sharing a yard with a running lawn mower. Tragedy can occur when a child falls off a ride-on mower while riding with an adult, when a ride-on mower is placed into reverse and the operator is un-aware that a child is behind, when a child is too young to handle a lawn mower, or when debris is thrown by a mower and strikes a child. Before mowing, walk around and be on the look out for hazards including tree stumps and holes. Pick up debris including stones, sticks, toys etc. keep young children out of the yard when it is being mowed. Read your owners manual and follow manufacturer rec-ommendations for safety and maintenance including ensuring guards and shields are tightly fastened.
SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS:
• dress appropriately: long pants, long-sleeved shirts, eye and ear protection, heavy gloves as well as sturdy, closed-toed shoes with slip resistant rubber soles. Wear sun pro-tection, a wide-brimmed hat and drink plenty
of water.• Never disengage the fail-safe mechanism (dead man switch) found on power mowers. it triggers an important safety feature of stop-ping the blades quickly as soon as the handle of a walk-behind mower is released or the op-erator of a ride-on mower falls off of the seat.• Turn the mower off before attempting to examine the blades, dislodge debris or adjust wheel height.• Avoid mowing the lawn when it is wet and slippery.• do not allow children under the age of 16 to use ride-on mowers and children under the age of 12 to use walk-behind mowers.
SPECIAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR RIDE ON MOWERS:
• Never allow passengers on ride on mowers.• Always look behind before putting a ride-on mower in reverse.• Slow down to mow slopes and take turns wide and gradual. To avoid tipping over, mow down a slope, not across.
MOWING A DITCH?
• it is strongly recommended to use a hand-held string trimmer. Follow the safety recom-mendations, keep firm footing and balance; don’t overreach and take the time to read the operator’s manual.• lawn mower injuries are preventable. Enjoy a tall glass of lemonade after a job well done using the Canada Safety Council’s safety rec-ommendations.

Three absent minded writers were busy discussing a writing project on the platform, while waiting for the train. The announcement was made, and the train finally arrived. There was complete panic among eagerly waiting passengers as the train made its way to the platform. Passengers rushed inside the train, and the train left. however, one of the writers was not able to catch the train in the con-fusion. A passerby who saw all this came up to the writer and told him not to worry and catch the next available train. The writer replied, “i am not worried for myself, but the real prob-lem is that i was the one who was suppose to catch the train, and the two of them who went on the train, actually came to see me off ”.
