Commitment to the Growth of Others the principles of servant leadership ~Robert Greenleaf Saturday brought us together to serve and network within the community of Rowland Heights at the 42nd annual Buckboard Day Parade and Pancake Breakfast. As I worked beside each of you, I saw some shinning and amazing exam-ples of the nine principle of serv-ant leadership: Commitment to the Growth of People. Robert Greenleaf summaries this princi-ple as:

Servant-leaders believe that peo-ple have an intrinsic value beyond their tangible contributions as workers. As such, servant-leaders are deeply committed to a person-al, professional, and spiritual growth of each and every individu-al within the organization. As adults, we can easily take over the situation and “get the job done”, but as Kiwanians, we know that each opportunity for service beside our SLP as an opportunity to develop a young person in all aspects of their lives. Each time we gather together with our

youth, we can seize an opportuni-ty to make sure they feel valued and appreciated. During the KI-WIN’S DCM on Saturday, Patrick had the members play an ice breaking game in which they had to share with the attendees why they love KIWIN’S. Multiple times we heard “because this is the one place (or group of people) who accepts me for who I am.” In some ways, I found this heart-breaking. Yet in others, we are all blessed to be part of that group of people who is accepting, tolerant, and provides our young people the opportunities for to feel ac-cepted by others. Newton Middle School Builders Club

Service Leadership Program

By Lon Salgren The Builders Club at Newton Middle School has held their first two meetings of the year (Oct 9 & 17). I was joined by President Victoria Davidson Castillo at the 10/9 meeting. Faculty advisor Ms Kammert opened their first meeting and introduced me to the club. First order of business was to elect new club officers. They elected their President, VP, Secretary and Treasurer. All the results were announced that day except Treasurer (due to time constraint). President: Jennifer, Vice President: Raven and Secretary: Isabella. At their second meeting Club President Jennifer brought the meeting to order with the ringing of the Builders Club bell. She announced that the clubs newly elected Treasurer is Genevie. I informed the club of two upcoming Kiwanis service events, (Adopt-a-Hwy on November 1st and Watershed Restoration on November 15th). Later when they were deciding on the types of service projects that the club want-ed to participate in I read them the letter I had re-ceived from DelHaven Community Center for their Holiday food and toy drive. Newton Middle School has an established club called the "Good News Club". It meets weekly on the same Thursday 2:30PM time slot that the Builders Club is scheduled to meet. That club's faculty advisor agreed that the Good News Club would go dark on the third Thursday and the Newton Builders Club would meet on that day instead. The next Builders Club meeting will be on November 20th, 2:30 in room C6.

Service Leadership Program

By Lon Salgren Div 35W Key Club held their DCM at Peck Park in Arcadia Saturday starting at 11 AM. They were well underway by the time I arrived around 12:30. LTG Vincent Nguyen invited the "buddy clubs" to come up and give their reports on joint service or fundraising pro-jects. Most buddy clubs did give an account of a joint project. However a few reported individual projects with their Kiwanis Club instead. After the DCM was adjourned they went into their

Spirit Cheer practice. They spent nearly an hour being led by their Spirit Cheer Chairperson Betty in learning four cheers starting off with the "how do you feel" cheer that all Key Clubbers and KIWIN'S know. It was good to review even this basic standard cheer because few acknowledged not yet knowing it. LTG Vince showed everyone a new pin representing DIV 35W Seals. It was $1 with proceeds to be donated to PTP (Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Protection) program. $100 worth of pins were sold. The DCM was brought to a close at 2:15. LTG Vince announced that their next DCM would be Saturday November 1st. Does that date sound familiar?

On the 18th, in the early Saturday morning, Kiwanis held a delicious event. It was held in Rowland, at Bell Memorial UMC Church. The smell of fresh pancakes, sausages, and sweet syrup filled the air. It was such a nice feeling to see everybody having a good time, either eating a nice breakfast or flipping pancakes. Everybody shared smiles; there was not a sad face out there. Students, members, Kiwanians, not only served, but had the chance to make new friends. Although, many woke up at four in the morning, it was worth it to see people readily to serve for Kiwanis, and pancakes!

42ND ANNUAL ROWLAND HEIGHTS BUCKBOARD DAYS PARADE

Story by David Malkin The 42nd Annual Rowland Heights Buckboard Days Parade is in the books. Once again, the Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights joined hands with the Buckboard Days Parade Committee to begin the day with a famous Kiwanis pancake breakfast. Lon Salgren delivered the trailer at 5:30AM and our club members began to arrive followed by sleepy SLP. It was very dark, but we felt safe under the watchful eye of Robert and Debra Barba. Tables were delivered by the Rowland Unified School District, coordi-nated by Gina Ward of RUSD, and the SLP immediately began to set up for the breakfast with the placemats made by Lon Salgren and Victoria Davidson-Castillo. The pancake batter was mixed by the SLP under the watchful eye of Mahmood Bashir, immediate past president and current LTG Division 35, and the pancakes were cooked by our SLP under the close supervision of Dave Wallach. Our own President, Victoria Davidson-Castillo, cooked the sausage under the supervision of her youngest son, Nicholas. Phil Hinojos, Casa Blanca, delivered coffee. Kathy Young and Susan Jacklin set up the serv-ing tables, coffee, juice and utensils along with the help again of our SLP. By 7:00AM we were ready to serve. It did not take long for the customers to come-- Rowland Water with 43 tickets, First General Bank and Wilson Mach with 30 tickets, and other community members and supporters. Before long, all of

the tables were full. Anna Wu worked the tables to collect donations for ELIMINATE, while Ben Su entertained the SLP with his so cute little dog. Soon it was 9:00AM and off to the start of the parade.
