To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.

To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.

To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.

To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

Story by David Malkin

Once again Public Information Officer Rodrigo Jimenez provided us with driving safety infor-mation using humor and laughter. Officer Jimenez was our guest speaker again this week. He pre-sented a variety of topics using a mixture of humor and facts. It made his presentation very entertain-ing and at the same time informative. He never looses anyone’s attention. Officer Jimenez again, like he did last year, made it very clear that they do not have a quota for tickets. In fact, he made it very clear it is illegal to have a quota. Tickets are given out when someone breaks the law and it is hoped that the ticket will modify the behavior for compliance. Fines collected go to the community where the activity oc-curred, not the CHP. Drunk driving was first covered, DUI. We learned that it is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol level greater than .08%. One 12oz can of beer equals .02% and takes one hour to pass out of the body. Therefore, 4 beers will get you to the legal limit, regardless if it is light or regular beer and take 4 hours to pass through your system. When you mix alcohol with non-alcoholic beverage, Long Island Tea, you may get over the limit even faster. If you are stopped for possible DUE, there is no pass or

fail; it is how well you perform in a series of tests. The average DUI costs approximately $12,000.00. He demon-strated, with the help of our LTG Mahmood Bashir and guest Andy, using DUI goggles, the effects of alcohol on coordination and balance. Seat belts are critical for saving lives. If you are wearing your seat belt under your armpit or behind you, you will receive a ticket. The belt must be worn over the shoulder from hip to hip. The only driver permitted not to wear a seat belt is a police or CHP officer. This is for safety rea-

sons in case the officer needs to react in an emergency and move quickly to help someone or to protect them-selves from suspects. Speeding is a main cause of accidents and fatalities. If you are in a rush you are usually not paying attention. Add detracted driving, texting, eating, or drinking coffee, you have a potential for a serious incident to occur. Comb you hair, shave and put your make up on prior to leaving the house, not while driving. Sounds basic, but at one time or another we have all done the-se things behind the wheel while driving, not to mention talking on the phone.

Service Leadership Programs

My name is Sophia Uemura, a student of Glen A. Wilson High School and the Lieutenant Governor Elect of the KIWIN’s Gold-stone Division. My vision is to charter more schools and to have more service projects with other branches of our organization. What I dream to accomplish best, however, is to inspire other members of KIWIN’s. There is an abundance of unlocked poten-tial within my division, and I sincerely hope to use the best of my abilities to inspire others around me to reach their goals whether it is getting 100 volunteer service hours, becoming president, decorating their cheer supplies for spirit events, etc. Serving in the KIWIN’s events over the past years has built up my passion for this organization andI look forward to creating these events. They hopefully will help other members have their KIWIN'S moment and realize their passion for service and spirit. I am looking forward to working with the wonderful Kiwanians from Division 35, and have their support of my efforts. Kiwanis Division 35 has always supported KIWIN’S Goldstone Division, and I am excited to get to know all of you, and would like to ex-tend an open invitation for all to join us at our DCM’S, service events and fundraisers. Yours in service, Sophia Uemura —

Monrovia Interclub

By Anna Wu On Thursday, April 30th we had an interclub with Kiwanis club Monrovia. They had very special speaker, Judy Kramer from the Palo Alto Kiwanis Club. Judy is the Region 5 Coordi-nator for The Eliminate Project. She came all the way down from Palo Alto to talk to two clubs in Division 35. The Glendora club that morning and the Monrovia club during lunch. In attendance from our club (Hacienda Heights) was Lt. Governor Mahmood Bashir, President Victoria Davidson, Division 35 Elimi-nate Chair Anna Wu, and Susan Jacklin. Judy share with us some valuable Eliminate facts as well as some of her personal experi-ence on an Eliminate trip aboard to see wom-en's get vaccinated. The presentations was moving and informative. At the end we were excited to hear that Mon-rovia wants to make the commitment to be-come a Model Club. Monrovia is waiting until their board meeting to make it final, but we are all excited for them nonetheless.

Ribfest 2015

May 3rd, 2015

15th annual scholarship fundraiser & Miss 4th of July pageant

By Nancy Bashir The barn doors have closed on Ribfest 2015, our 15th annual scholarship fundraiser & Miss 4th of July pageant. The event was held on May 3rd at the Industry Hills Expo Center Pavil-ion, with the festivities beginning with a 5:00 p.m. social hour, and the main event getting un-derway at 6:00 p.m. with a howdy from our very own LTG, Mahmood Bashir, and then a very warm welcome from Madam President, Victoria Davidson. West Covina Kiwanian Brad Man-ning took the helm as emcee & the evening was underway! There were some awesome items on the Silent Auction & Live Auction tables, and the attendees had lots of fun with the bidding. The other half of the Magnificent Mannings, West Covina President Ken Manning, served as auctioneer. The KIWIN’S, Key-Club, and Circle K were on hand to serve the crowd lots of yummy ribs & chicken, salad, potatoes, bread, and cake. Congressman Ed Royce took the stage to acknowledge the hard work & dedication of the KIWIN’S & Key Club Presidents of Los Altos & Wilson High Schools. After the entire crowd voted, Nicole Beltran was chosen Miss 4th of July. She & her court, Jade Wong & Stephanie Liu, were given scholarships, and will reign over the Hacienda Heights “I Love America” 4th of July parade. We were honored with two very special guests, Cal-Nev-Ha Governor “WooHoo” Alan Guire & First Lady “Mrs. WooHoo” Melissa Guire. With happy smiles & full tummies, the evening came to a close around 9:00 p.m. Until next year…..!

HACIENDA HEIGHTS KIWANIS CLUB SERVES PANCAKE BREAKFAST TO

ROWLAND HEIGHTS SENIOR PATHFINDERS

Story by David Malkin The Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club held their annual “Thank You” pancake breakfast for the Rowland Heights Senior Pathfinders. About 50 seniors en-joyed a breakfast of special Kiwanis pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee and or-ange juice. For the past several years our Kiwanis club has served this break-fast to express our gratitude to the seniors for their support of our Kiwanis activities, especially for their donations to the Shoes That Fit Program and Pull Tabs for Ronald McDonald House. The Rowland Heights Senor Pathfind-ers surprised us with a check for $141.00 for our Shoes That Fit fund. Dave Wallach was on the pancake grill with Victoria Davidson-Castillo as-sisting, Charles Huff was on the sausage grill with David Malkin assisting, Mahmood was on the scrambled eggs grill, while Grace Chan made the eggs Lon Salgren made the pancake batter and brought the trailer to the park and kept the equipment working. It was truly a team effort. It was an enjoyable pancake breakfast for all and we will be back next year to repeat it.

AN AMERICAN HERO IN OUR MIDST Gunnery Sergeant Brian C. Jacklin Acceptance Speech

AN AMERICAN HERO IN OUR MIDST

By Susan M Jacklin United States Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton:;April 9, 2015, 10 am: I had the profound honor to witness my son Gunnery Sergeant Brian C. Jacklin of MARSOC Division Ma-rine Raiders, receive the Navy Cross Medal, our country’s 2nd highest military decoration awarded for valor for ex-traordinary heroism in combat. I could go on and on about the pride a mother feels for her son to witness such an epic even like this, a once in a lifetime honor to say the least, but, what I’d like to do instead, is to share the essence of my son’s feelings in his own words about that particular mission and the ensuing 2 days of battle it took to gain victory over the enemy. I honor the other men involved for their heroic deeds, and I hope you will be touched by the selfless acts and love these men have for country and themselves in a way you’ve never known or felt before. I love my son dearly, and love and respect all those he serves with, in past battles, this battle, and I pray that there won’t be a next. I can tell you that the brotherhood they share is unique and solid to the core within them all. I have been privileged to meet these men, the sons of other very proud mom’s….we are a united force, a fam-ily within, together for our sons of whom we are so incredibly proud to call “our hero”.

Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you all for taking the time to be part of such tremendous occasion. I would like to start by saying how proud and humbled I am to receive such a prestigious award. This is an honor that will remain with me throughout the rest of my life, and I thank you for the opportunity to represent both MARSOC and the Marine Corps in accepting it. However, the power and merits of this organization can never be measured in one’s actions alone. It is in the collec-tive bond we share throughout the course of our service together that enables the great acts of heroism and sacri-fice that have become the standard amongst the operators of our unit. Truly, this ceremony is a testament to the courage and devotion exhibited on a regular basis by rough men, ready to do whatever is necessary to make good on the faith that our brothers and command put in us. These are men who would rather die than live with the shame that they didn’t offer their last breath in service to the man to their left and right in battle. These men you see before you today, along with HM1 Walker and SSgt Pass, who cannot be here to due to opera-tional commitments, embody the very best that the Marine Corps and MARSOC have to offer. East man was shaped through immense trials of personal fortitude and dedication, giving all he had to offer at times when only the great pride of walking the path least traveled was there to keep him company. Through consistent discipline, drive and sacrifice, they have risen to the top of their trade and embody the ethos of the Marine Raider—a man who displays the very pinnacle of soldierly virture and unwavering loyalty; a man who will never quit or surrender, and will at all times stand ready to sacrifice whatever is needed to accomplish the mission. The men who swell the ranks surround-ing you today are these men, and stand as shining examples of what our nation entrusts its freedoms and respect to.

THETHETHE KIWANISCOPEKIWANISCOPEKIWANISCOPE May 5, 2015

There has never been a prouder experience in my military career than June 14th and 15th of 2012; not because of any-thing I did, but because of what I saw done by others. There is no way to express the magnitude of heroism AND destruction that is possible when men of extraordinary skill and tenacity lay everything on the line for each other. Nothing is more awe inspiring than the look of fellow operators’ faces as they are surrounded by death. The casual smile of confidence as they acknowledge that things will be as they will be, and if this is the way we die, then let’s do it right and honor our legacy. When surrounded on all sides by 7-8 times our numbers, we faced what seemed the inevitability of death as we attempted a daytime CASEVAC of our grievously wounded. Not a man before you here skipped a beat in their com-mitment to seeing their injured brothers home. All or nothing, death or glory, these men before you charged out into the heaviest barrage of fire I’ve seen in over 10 years of combat to get the job done. Their resolute determina-tion and violence of action, coupled with divine intervention secured the lives of Captain Herrera and Sgt Briere. I have no doubt that had we not been forged in the severest of training and God did not have a purpose for us in this life, we would not be standing here today. I would also like to acknowledge the other key players who kept us alive throughout the fight. To LtCol Brooks, and MGySgt Kelly, thank you for your tireless efforts to ensure we had every authority and resource necessary to turn the tide of momentum in our favor. You never questioned our actions on the ground, only what we needed to win. This trust in small unit leadership speaks volumes for what MARSOC has become, and its promise for future endeav-ors. To the brave aircrews of the close air support and CASEVAC platforms who routinely flew through hails of gunfire to kill our enemy and rescue our wounded, you are and always will be the guardian angels of the man on the ground, and deserve every praise we can offer. To our brave brethren of SEAL Team Three, who came out to reinforce and fight with us throughout the second day of carnage, your efforts and professionalism are not forgotten. These SEALs fought with us side by side, and at a cost of casualties of their own. As we move towards a future of integrated operations, I will always remember the steadfast valor exhibited by these men, and hold only the highest of esteem for their capabilities. Most importantly, I would like to thank our wives and families, who stand by us through our trials and successes, and who take a back seat to the teams at home so that we can go “live the dream” around the world; who often wait in vain for the men they love to come home, only to find that we are no longer as they remembered, but hard-ened and calloused to family life. Your struggles are infinitely harder than ours, and your payoff all too often falls short of that deserved. For the families of those loved and lost in service, most recently in the tragic helicopter crash off the coast of Florida, our thoughts and prayers are with you. You are, and always will be, family to us, hold-ing a sacred place in our hearts and by our sides. Finally, I have known no greater honor or satisfaction in this life than to have been afforded the opportunity to serve with the men who fill our ranks here today. I am eternally grateful to be accepted amongst them, and that I may hold my head high in their presence. The wisdom of our old breed, combined with the vigor of our new, inspires me daily to earn my place among these warriors. There can be no resting on our laurels here, for every day brings new challenges and triumphs, and we will always stand ready to meet them head on, with smiles on our faces and deter-mination in our hearts. Brothers, never above you, never below you, always beside you! Semper Fidelis.
