To Willie o Reilly, Burren Eye Photography, thank you for all the photos throughout the year.
This year‟s Dr. McCarthy Cup was most special and historic as we welcomed for the first time two grandchildren of Dr. McCarthy. Frank Burke

8
match and were the first descendants of Dr. McCarthy to see the Cup being
played in its 55 year history.
The Cup dates back to 1963 and is one of the oldest, original and still active
cups in the entire GAA. The original presentation photograph was replicated
earlier in the evening, including local descendants from the original photo.
After the match we spent a really special evening in the Pier Head with our
visitors and their spouses Karen and Chuck. John Conneely joined us on an
historical basis, and the whole occasion was recorded for Kinvara
Community Radio thanks to Ailish and Barry Kavanagh.
As it happened the match was a draw (first time ever). We thank the 26 lads
who played, their coaches, referee Tommy Hanlon and Paul O‟Donoghue for
his co-operation and assistance.

year.

time, commitment and guidance within the club.

I have had the privilege to be involved within this club for the past 6/7 years, originally just
helping out on the sideline and fundraising events. In the more recent years as Child
Welfare Officer, Health & Wellbeing Committee member and officially Juvenile Secretary
this past year, although I did help in this role in previous years.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone on the Kinvara GAA Executive
committee, Senior club, Juvenile club and Camoige club for their time and efforts in
developing and maintaining our club. The amount of experience, knowledge and good will
within our club is of a high standard and has been noted by people outside our club.
To anyone who gave me guidance within the club or from County board level, I appreciate
it. It has been a pleasure working with you all and I look forward to the year ahead, busy as
it maybe!

Child Welfare Officers Report
Over the past year I have attended courses provided by the County Board to ensure our
Club is aware of all the new Policies and Guidelines on Child Protection, which are in law
since. All relevant information have been discussed at our regular Juvenile club meetings
and all managers and coaches have been updated on these policies and guidelines.
All of our coaches in both Hurling and Football are GardaVetted .
No new volunteers are allowed to train our children unless they have Garda Vetting
completed and the Child Protection course also completed.
The majority of our coaches have these courses completed, only a small few , through no
fault of their own had to wait for the new Spring Child Protection course to become
available. They will attend this course in the coming weeks.
The Spring Hurling and Football course calendar is now available and im pleased to say at
present we have 6 coaches willing to attend more courses. We are aiming for more coaches
to attend AWARD 1 courses to gain more knowledge and receive up to date information
on training and new guidelines. In 2018 we had a number of coaches complete hurling and
football foundation courses.
During the year we hosted Feile and it was a very successful event.
All host families were Garda Vetted without any problems and all children were cared for
to the highest standard. We thank all parents involved with this.
Going forward this year, we still have an open door policy within our club, should anybody
i.e. a child, parent or coach have an issue that they would like guidance or help with. There
is a system in place provided by Croke Park to help us deal with any situation that may
arise within our club. Please contact any club officer or Mary Cullen Ward if you require
assistance.
In light of recent events that happened with another club this year, it has been said at
County Board meetings that all clubs will be audited this coming year.
Yours in sport
Mary Cullen Ward

Hurling
U6 Colm Burke, Nigel Conneely, Colm Gill, Peter Mahon & Rob Kenny
This team had 35 training sessions from Feb- Oct 2018.
Played 6 matches against Michael Cusacks, Gort, Ballinderreen and Craughwell.
U7 Anythony Byrne, Damien Huban & Jonathan Kavanagh
23 boys in this group, who trained very well in 2018. A lot of emphasis in training was
with striking out of the hands on both sides and on the run. This group also had a cup for
hurler of the week, which was agreat incentive for the children to train at home. Thanks to
Paul for organizing the cup. They played 5 matches and finished up training on Nov 13th
in
the astro pitch.

Blitz Bekan, Co. Mayo
Good group kids. Mix strong and weaker. Some struggle to grasp the game others
quiet strong in games . You can see who does bit at home. Competitive in most games we
played
Used Seamount early in year on Sat mornings plan to use again next year if we have
option.
Next year All coaches plan to move with them to under 9 next year
If we did have another set hands or even a minor who might be interested in helpin , it
would be great.
Suggestion Repair or get goal posts appropriate to age groups in pitch for games. You either
have small goals or goal posts way too big or not enough for groups up to under 12
Schools don‟t seem to promote hurling for kids until 3rd
class. Other Galway schools seem
to be doing it with younger groups. Perhaps its just up to the individual schools.
13
U9 David Hawkins, Alan Mooney, Barry o Driscoll
18 players in this group. They played 3 challenge matches and took place in an u9 blitz in
Craughwell, competing in 4 games.
16 training sessions and some sessions during the holidays.
U10 Colie Mc Garry, Brian Crossan
In total we ran 30 sessions this year (This does include some Community Games matches,
U10.5).
We started with 4 weeks in Seamount (Snow'ed off on the 5th wkend), at the ball wall and
on the astro pitch. Low-ish attendance for this 12 to 13 or so.
Go Games Played:

2. Cusacks (away)
3. Ballinderreen (away)
4. Moycullen (away)
5. Ardrahan (away + home)
6. Gort (multiple times)
7. St Tomas's (away)
Go Game results varied - some days struggling, and most days (when we had the full panel)
the U10 were very competitive.
Finished the year with three busy Saturdays -
1. Go game in Ballinderreen
2. Niall Donoghue Festival of Hurling in Kilbeackenty
3. Go games in Bekan
Attendance numbers varied over the year - most of the time we had a match, we would have
20+ players, for training numbers were low in April/May, but after that numbers were very
strong with 18 to 20 kids.
Some of the sessions included here were for the Community Games (Under 10.5). We
played three warm up games for this, and were very competitive in all three. Afraid I was
not able to attend the actual match (v Clairnbridge), so I'm not able go give an update on
that.
I'd like to say a big thank you to Brian Crossan, Anne Heavey, John Mullane, Olga Kelly
and anyone else who helped out over the course of the year.
and all parents who helped out throughout the year.

U6 Nigel Conneelly, Kieran Cullinane and Aaron Hylan
Good interest in U6 football for the year, a lovely mix of Junior and Senior infants. Trained
every Thursday evening at the pitch for the summer and early Autumn, moving onto the
astro on Saturday evening till mid December.
Attendance was 15-20 children each night. We played one blitz against Clarinbridge with 22
togged.
In training we focused a lot on the basic skills of kicking, hand passing catching etc.For
games the children were divided per their class and games were refereed by the rules.
Many thanks to all who helped throughout the year.
U8 Fiona Kenny, Kevin Malone, Olive Malone & Rob Kenny
We had on average 23 children train with us regularly during the year. The kids are
enthusiastic and have really started to develop their skills. We trained through the summer
bar about 2 weeks. During the summer we still had about 10-15 players come. We played
one Blitz against Clarinbridge in September. The kids performed well, and worked well as
a team. They learned alot from it. We did notice that our side was a young side last year as
they were all under 7 , and when we played Clarinbridge, the majority of them were 8. We
are missing a year for football. We were entered into a league during the summer, but we
didn't play any of these matches as we could never make the numbers. We are hoping this
will be different next year. It was great to end the season with a 'la na club game ' in
November. The children really enjoyed it and it was a great game of football from them all.
Many thanks to all who helped throughout the year, Fiona.

SUBJECT: REVIEW OF 2018
YEAR DATE: NOVEMBER
21, 2018
The objective of the U12 football management team for 2018 was to ensure we develop as many players as possible to their maximum potential, thereby ensuring that they will
have the skills, fitness, physical strength and dedication necessary to progress within the
age structure. The GAA Player Pathway identifies the different Stages and Phases of development
our players progress through. The capacities that players should develop to move
along the pathway at the optimal rate have been identified according to the Total
Playing Performance (TPP) Model.
Different Philosophies help us understand our players' desires at each Stage of the
Pathway: Children - „Play to Learn‟
Youths - ‘Learn to Compete’
17
Adults - „Compete to Win‟
18
U12 playing numbers: The number of players registered at the U12 age level was twenty with five new players
starting football for the first time. We also welcomed players from neighboring parishes
to our underage football structure. Participation and attendance at training sessions:
U12 commenced on 22 March 2018 and finished on the 21 October 2018 (U12 Group 5 Shield Final). Overall, there were high levels of player attendance and participation.
Development of the squad:
The coaches concentrated on a number of skill development techniques with a strong
focus on team play. Management strongly believe that it was this „team philosophy‟ that
contributed to the success of this age group during 2018. Competition:
Our U12 team was entered into the Galway GAA U12 football league and were positioned in group five along with Craughwell, Loughrea, Claregalway, St James and Athenry.
The competition was planned to be run off over five rounds between 20/5/2018 and 5/6/2018 with finals arranged for July 2018.
Our schedule meant that we had matches on 20 May, 27 May, 29 May, 3 June and 5
June. Our actual match dates and results are within the following table:
Date Team Home / Away Result Score line
24/5/18 Craughwell Away Loss (K) 3-4, (C) 3-8 27/5/18 Loughrea Home Loss (K) 2-2, (L) 3-10 29/5/18 St. James Away Win (K) 3-6, (SJ) 0-9 12/6/18 Claregalway Away Loss (K) 3-15, (C) 8-13 04/9/18 Athenry Home Win (K) 8-11, (A) 5-2
07/10/18 Shield Semi-Final – St. James Away Win (K) 1-6, (SJ) 0-3 21/10/18 Shield Final - Claregalway Neutral Win (K) 1-4, (C) 0-6
The timing of the league games was inappropriate with our team playing three matches
within a five-day turnaround. There was little flexibility given by Coiste na nÓg Peil in
re- fixing/re-scheduling matches. Squad participation in matches:
U12 and U11 coaches worked together during the year and organized additional games
on league fixture days against the opposing teams. It was not always possible to have a
second match due to player numbers in the opposing team. U12 management endeavored to rotate players within match day squads as much
as possible. There were some players that did not have game time in the final.
19
Success
Our U12 football squad won the shield final against a very strong Claregalway team whom had
beaten us earlier in the season on a score line of 8-13 to 3-15. The ability to overturn this result
into a winning shield final score line of 1-4 to 0-6 was down to how the squad gelled together
during the year. The boys played for each other, giving support to their team mates when
required. Future:
Management look forward to working with this group of players in 2019.
I would like to thank the players, their parents and the Juvenile Committee for their constant support.
Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in day out and I would like to express my
appreciation to my fellow coaches, David McAndrew, John Rodgers and Ciaran Cunningham
whom contributed greatly to the success that we had this year. Michael O‟Grady.
U13 Tommy Ivers, Michael oGrady
The U-13 Footballers won the U-13 2A County Final V Dunmore on the 11th of November in
Claregalway. As Kinvara had already been beaten by Dunmore earlier in the year (by 4 goals!),
it was great to win the final against the favourites.
The Kinvara U-13 team had 15 training sessions throughout the year. Most of squad were also
playing football and hurling in their respective U-12 & U-14 teams. After the opening loss to
Dunmore, Kinvara enjoyed good wins over Clarinbridge & Tuam Stars. Unfortunately, Athenry
conceded their game to Kinvara.
While it was a successful year in terms of silverware and success, it would have been nice to
have had more matches and game time for the lads. We had 24 players in the squad and all
players got game in the three qualifying rounds. Unfortunately there were a few players who
didn't enjoy game time in the final which the team management were disappointed about.
However, next season we have another Feile Competition to look forward to and hopefully more
matches.
I like to thank all the parents for their support and help with lifts to matches and also to fellow
coach Michael O Grady for his great commitment throughout the year. Finally, a big thank to
you the Juvenile Committee for keeping the club going forward on and off the pitch.
Kind regards
Tommy

U14 Vinny Martyn, Kevin Sexton,Chris Philips
The U14 Football Team had a very successful year winning the U14 Division 2B Championship.
It was the first ever football title for this group of players making it extra special.
After the long drawn out group stages we qualified to meet Kilconly in the Championship semi-
final. A tough challenge game against Menlough set us up nicely going into this game but what a
battle it was. Trailing by 5 points at half time we fought back to win by 3. The manner of the win
underlined the steely determination of this group of players and gave them great confidence
going into the final.
The County final against Carna-Caiseal/Na Piarsaigh was played in Inverin in perfect conditions.
Early tense exchanges had us level after 10 minutes. However Kinvara‟s superior skill and
fitness then began to show and there was no stopping these Kinvara boys winning by a wide
margin in the end.
There were joyous scenes when Captain Shaun Philips lifted the winning cup.
The U14 also participated in Football Feile na nOg in April winning 1 of their 3 group games.
All games were tight affairs and the experience of this weekend stood to them for the later
championship winning run.
A big thank you to players, parents and coaches for their commitment throughout the year.

The U15 Football Team had another great year culminating in winning the U15 Divisional
Championship. This is now the third year in a row that this group of players have been winners
in their Division and also last year won the U14 Football Feile na nOg and represented Galway
at the National Feile competition.
The County Final (v Killererin) was played in ideal conditions under 13-aside rules. After a great
battle, the team eventually won out on a scoreline of Kinvara 5:5 to Killererin 4:4. The win
represented a great team performance and all players deserved great credit for a wonderful
achievement. Captain Joe Meares was presented with the Divisional Cup and made a great
acceptance speech. Well done to all the players. Many thanks to all who helped throughout the
year.
