These virtues are no different to those forged in our country’s history by the brave men and women who have defended our freedom, democracy and rights when they have been threatened. It is our responsibility to ensure that the youth of today do not forget what makes this country of ours great. The Kingston Primary School ANZAC Dawn Service is a way of bringing our youth, family, citizens and community together in unity to say “we haven’t forgotten” and commit to aspiring to the same virtues. The Dawn Service commences at 6.30am on Friday 7 th April. Those who plan to attend are asked to be in the passive play area of the school at 6.15am in readiness. There will be an art installation created by the students and a free community breakfast, provided by the P&C, after the service. Last year, approximately 500 bacon and egg burgers were consumed and I hope that we have a bigger crowd this year. Kingston Primary School has won state and national awards for these events over the years and it is another example of the school and community working together. The school day will commence as usual, with students supervised in the passive play area from 8.00am. Maths in Motion In 2015, we decided to develop a program for students in years 5 and 6 who were high achievers in Mathematics. We took on a program called Maths in Motion which requires students to learn and apply skills and understandings in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to tune and race a racing car. In the same year, we ran a local race and selected our top team to enter a world-wide competition. We won through the international knock-out round and then finished top 15 in the semi-finals. A team of 5 students then flew to Stratford Upon Avon in England to compete in the world final. Out of 91000 students world- wide, our team from Kingston was ranked 8 th in the world. In 2016, we won through the knock-out round and we were eliminated in the semi-final. This was also a great effort. This year, the team that won the local competition raced in the international knock-out race last week. They finished 3 rd and have won through to the semi-final. They will be working extremely hard now to tune their car for the semi-final in May, hoping to win their way to another world final in England. Good luck team. This year’s team of four consists of Lara Graham, Lukas Murray, Zoe Parker and Dylan Cooper. End of Term / Start of Term Dates This Friday is the last day of term 1 with the 3.00pm siren marking the beginning of the term 1 holiday break. This year, the school holidays include the Easter public holidays. Teachers resume work on Monday 24 th April and Tuesday 25 th April is the ANZAC Day public holiday. All students are to return to school on Wednesday 26 th April. Staff Changes / Leave Mr Clarke will commence 7 weeks of Long Service Leave at the beginning of term 2. We are fortunate to have Mrs Tither, a long term and permanent member of the Kingston teaching staff to take on this role for the whole seven weeks. I would also like to thank Mr Maher for his service over term 1. Mr Maher has worked two half days each week and his role will be taken on by Mrs Juengling or Mrs J as the kids call her.

School Photos This week is a challenge in timetabling for us as we program 33 classrooms of students, individual groups, staff and family photographs completed in three days. To complicate this we have an iSports day for selected year 4-6 students on Tuesday and a number of other events to plan around. Parents can assist us by ensuring that all

students are in school uniform ready to go and that they are on time for any family photos that are scheduled. I also urge parents to be patient and flexible as we undertake this task. Alan Kidd – Principal

Virtues

This term the whole school is

learning about:

COURAGE

Courage is personal bravery in the face of

fear. It is doing what needs to be done

even when it is really hard or scary.

Courage is going ahead even when you feel

like giving up. Courage is needed in trying

new things. It is admitting mistakes and

then doing the right thing. Courage is the

strength in your heart.

I have courage. I am willing to try new things. I admit mistakes and learn from them. I listen to my heart. I have the courage to do the right thing.

PIZZA WITH THE PRINCIPAL Congratulations to the following students who were treated to Pizza with the Principal for displaying their virtues around the school recently:

Tomai Davis, Ruby Jarvis, Helen Wang, Caleb White, Arian Marinko, Rhyley Paynter, Katie Emmerton, Brandon Mberi.

KINDY ENROLMENTS 2018 Applications for enrolment for Kindy 2018 are available from the front office. Please bring proof of address (eg utility bill) and your child’s birth certificate. Please enrol as soon as you can to ensure your child has a place at kindy next year.

Visible Learning at Kingston

This fortnight the whole school has focused on students being Self Aware. For students to be self-

aware in regards to their learning, they really need to be honest with themselves about where

they are now, and where they need to be and the steps they need to take in

order for this to happen. This is part of making students Assessment

Capable.

For students to be Self-Aware/Honest they need to: Know what and how they are going

Admit when they don’t know something

Know not all learning is fun, but they understand that it is

exciting when all the pieces fit together

Not skip work because it is too hard

Know their strengths and weaknesses

Kindy-Year 1 Students have also had Self-Aware Sally-Anne/Honest Hannah helping them in their

classroom to engage them with this concept.

Word From Your Chaplain…Word From Your Chaplain…Word From Your Chaplain…Word From Your Chaplain… As we are nearing the end of term 1 it is fair to say, “That term sure did fly by fast!” It has been very encouraging to have several parents come and speak to me with things they are needing support with for their families. I say encouraging because it takes courage to open up to someone and often all we need is to be heard and understood. As a Chaplain I don’t always have the answers but I do have the time. Finally the school holidays can bring about a sense of relief in terms of allowing our routines to lapse a little – which at times is good and as a Mum I enjoy that. However I’m also aware that school holidays are not for everyone and they can add extra stress to our day to day life. Either way I hope you all find some time to enjoy the break together, especially around Easter. I’m looking forward to the holiday break I’m excited for term 2! We are all part of an amazing school community! Take Care Reet Joy –School Chaplain

Talk like a Techy Each newsletter ‘Talk like a Techy’ will cover the basic computer vocabulary your

child will be learning at school. This vocabulary is explicitly taught when students are using

applications, coding, robotics and digital technologies.

This week’s Tech word is BUG

In the computer world, a bug is an error in a software program. It may cause a program to

unexpectedly quit or behave in an unintended manner. For example, a small bug may cause a

button within a program's interface not to respond when you click it. A more serious bug may

cause the program to hang or crash due to an infinite calculation or memory leak.
