KINGS
ATLAS
Last year the new Krewe of Kings made an impressive debut in Metairie. For its encore presentation, captain and fl oat builder Mac Cantrell Jr. plans a 15-fl oat
parade entitled FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING. Float subjects include First Time for a Train Ride, First Dancing School, and First Mardi Gras. Second year membership is up to 350. The parade will feature the Rhythm on the Route marching band contest. Signature throws include medallion beads and lighted crowns and scepters. This year’s king is Melvin Grodsky and his queen is Sarah Elizabeth Grodsky. The Krewe of Kings will end at the Family Gras Celebration at the Clearview Shopping Center.
After a four-year absence, the Metairie-based Krewe of Atlas returns to the Jef-ferson Parish Mardi Gras parade calendar. The theme of the 12-fl oat parade
is ATLAS IS BACK TOO: Float titles include Going to the Beach, Shopping at the Mall, and Thanksgiving. King and Queen of the 200 male and female member krewe are Ross Anthony Miller and Donnell Rae Miller. There will be no ball or special throws this year.
The newest krewe in all of Carnival is the product of one of the most creative fami-lies in Mardi Gras history—the Cantrells. Mac Cantrell Sr. began in the fl oat busi-ness in the late 1940s and through the years built parades for dozens of krewes, including Comus, Momus, and Proteus. Krewe of Kings founder and captain Mac Cantrell Jr. was captain of the Krewe of Thor from 1975-2013.

The Krewe of Atlas is named for the leg-endary strongman of Grecian mythology. The male and female club was organized in 1969 and was the fi rst to roll over the now standard Metairie parade route.
