Entertainment LineupTaking Shape for MobilePride Weekend

“A riviting and rewarding experi-ence!” That’s what the Cincin-nati CityBeat is saying about

Kevin J. Thorton, the opening act forthis’ year’s Mobile Alabama PrideWeekend, April 29, 20 and May 1. OnFriday, April 29, Pride weekend kicksoff with a VIP Kick Off Party in the

Skyview Lounge atop the Holiday Innin Downtown Mobile (our host hotel).Comedian/Singer/Storyteller Kevin JThornton it set to be the special guestperformer. Thorton is currently touringto promote his latest album, JanuaryDream.

His website sums up his latesttouring show “I Love You (We’reF*#ked)” this way: “It’s a tight, fastpaced 60 minute show that showcasesKevin’s signature style of concert, storytelling and stand up comedy. It’s atale of lost love spun into a hilariouslyabsurd odyssey! The hero knows hemust move on but must first look backand ask “how the hell did I get here?”

Thorton’s work is widely featuredon MTV’s Logo Network. Learn moreabout Kevin and sample his incrediblemusic at www.kevinjthorton.com. A VIPticket ($30) gets you into the show, andtakes care of any cover charges overthe weekend at any participating bar orvenue. You can order them on line atwww.mobilealabamapride.com or pur-chase yours at B-Bob’s, Gabriel’s,Bacchus and Midtown Pub.

The committee continues to addnew events and talent every week...and there are several key events. Sat-urday will feature the annual MobileAlabama Pride Parade, which rolls ona route taking the procession aroundBienville Square. That’;s also the loca-tion of Saturday and Sunday’s “Pride inthe Park” celebration. Pride in the Parkfeatures a stage filled with entertain-ment, including performers God-Des& She www.god-desandshe.com , LolaGulley www.lolgulley.biz , DJ Mel andThe Rewind Band. Local participatingbars will also feature a number of themenights for different segments of thecommunity.

Mobile’s annual Pride Parade mightnot be as big as some of the city’s longMardi Gras processions, but it hasgrabbed big headlines over the pastfew years. Two years ago, an off-again/on-again commitment from a city coun-cil member caused quite a stir when heseemed to shy away from his pledge totake part. In the end, he did ride in theprocession, as did his opponent in theupcoming election!

Last year amid a budget crises, theparade was back in the headlines whenthe city reneged on a set price for aparade permit, traffic enforcement andother city requirements. The LGBTcommunity set about publicly trying toraise funds for the increase. The sub-sequent television news coveragehelped change the city’s heart, and itstayed true to the original agreement. In both cases, the media attentionhelped publicize Mobile’s Pride Week-end, and proved to be good for theevent. It’s also important to note MobileAlabama Pride has a very good work-ing relationship with the City of Mobile.

Once again, The Holiday Inn down-town will be the host hotel. For moreinformation, check the Mobile AlabamaPride websites, which is being updated

weekly. There you can also downloadforms for entry into the parade, or to bea vendor in the park.www.mobilealabamapride.com.
