During his 30 year tenure, Martin served as President (1996-2005); Secretary (2005-2014); and as a member of the Nominating, Finance, Development, Medical Ethics, and Governance Committees. Carl Baker, Executive Director, and John Kayser, President of the Board, each shared memories of their experiences serving with Martin. Carl made a list of 20 significant things that were spearheaded by Martin that shaped K-B House. A few of the high points included: the health care wing, built in the late 1980s; the geriatric clinic, opened in 1990; and the Woods of KB, opened in 1994. John Kayser echoed Carl’s sentiments and continued with, “I feel confident in stating that no one individual has done as much as Martin in creating and shaping KB to the way it is today. He sometimes had the idea for the change at KB. He would help manage the board and the organization through the process to make the change. Martin would lend his legal expertise and perspective to the process as needed.” Ever modest, Martin gave credit to other Board members with whom he served with such as Howard Dean, Bob Harbour, and Jim Haugh. He considered it his privilege to serve with such esteemed Board members and dedicated staff who believe in the mission of K-B House. As a member of many organizations over the years, Martin said he found it personally fulfilling and rewarding to work with such sincere people who want to improve the quality of life for elderly residents in our community. Following Martin’s presentation, John Kayser highlighted a new member of the Legacy Society since the dinner last year. Mr. James Mayer, Jr. is the first Legacy Society member who is the son of a resident. His mother, Adele Mayer, lives in the Woods and his father, Jim Mayer, Sr. lived in K-B House. The final part of the program included a special recognition of Centenarian donors to K-B House. Each one of the 100-year old residents have provided yearly, generous support during the time they have lived at K-B House. We are unique in our ability to have five Centenarian donors: Dick & Fern Decker, Kathryn Brackett, Viola Malmgren, and Geraldine Alvarez. Each one was presented with a certificate. During his closing speech Jim Parsons, Chair of the Development Committee, said, “I’d especially like to acknowledge the presence of several esteemed guests who have reached the milestone age of 100. You provide inspiration to those of us in the room that are a bit younger and less experienced. In fact, all of the residents in the Great Lounge tonight offer us wisdom and insights. Message from the PresidentSome 80 years ago, King-Bruwaert House opened its doors to the public for the first time and theresponse was remarkable. Our unique home was described as “Hinsdale’s most attractiveshowpiece,” located on a beautiful 35-acre landscaped, wooded site (that would eventually beannexed to Burr Ridge). K-B’s first director was Katherine J. Magoun, who managed the housewith a strict demeanor. She was assisted by a “large, efficient staff” who initially welcomed 30residents within the first few weeks. Among society’s notables who attended the opening in 1933were Mr. and Mrs. Potter Palmer, Mr. and Mrs. William Burry and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dixon.

Today, K-B continues to be recognized as an architectural gem of the community. More than 100residents reside in our beautiful home that now features four levels of care. Our expansive

grounds feature a 1-1/2 mile walking path, putting greens, bocce ball court and Enabling Garden. A chapter in ourhistory soon will change when current Executive Director, Carl Baker, steps down after nearly 30 years of leadership.Carl was hired in 1986 to oversee major renovations to the house. During the course of his long, accomplished career,he has been involved in many construction projects including a large kitchen renovation, two skilled care areas, theaddition of the Suzanne’s Place memory loss unit, the conception and development of the highly successful Woods ofKing-Bruwaert, remodeling of our theater, and an abundance of other enhancements that have improved the lives ofour residents. He currently oversees 150 employees who work in more than 15 departments.

Throughout the years, there have been many dedicated board members, managers and support staff who have contributed to the excellent care andelegant surroundings that make K-B so special. Among them we recognizeBonnie Warden, Director of Admissions and Sales, who devoted 25 years tothe K-B community in a capacity that kept us financially strong withrelatively high census levels. Bonnie retired mid-January to travel and spendmore time with family and friends. She and Carl worked closely together tocontinue our mission and welcome people to become part of our K-Bcommunity. We will remember them for their tireless energy and commitment to our organization.

As we start our 81st year of operations, we look forward to more changes that will take us on a new path. Anothermajor kitchen renovation is scheduled to begin in 2014 that will provide more room for expanded dining service.Work has begun on the replacement of our custom tile roof that will take a better part of the year to complete.Eventually, when our executive search brings us a new Executive Director, we will accept the challenge of makingother changes to our campus that will keep us aligned with the needs of our senior adult market.

The future looks to be promising and exciting – and we welcome ongoing support and feedback as our wonderfuljourney continues.

Our new Director of Social Services Katie Schaff, shares a common bond with ournewly appointed Director of Admissions and Sales, Pat Van Meter. Both have alove of canines and they bring their pets to work with them to interact withresidents and families in a positive way. Katie, left, is pictured holding her dog,Raleigh, a Bichon Poodle mix, while Pat poses with Coco, a Chocolate Labradorwho was adopted from a rescue shelter.

Pat, who previously served as K-B’s Director of Nursing for 18 years, bringsexcellent medical knowledge and experience to her new position at K-B. Prior tojoining K-B, Katie worked as a psychotherapist for The Community House inHinsdale. She and Raleigh also work in the K-B Geriatric Assessment Clinic.

Bonnie Warden &Carl Baker celebrateher 25th year of working at K-B House at the EmployeeAppreciationLuncheon in June 2013.

The 80th Anniversary Annual Garden Party was held on abeautiful, sunny Sunday in September. Over 700 guestsand residents enjoyed gourmet food, tasteful décor, beautiful grounds, and entertainment provided by TheFlat Cats. Many guests travel from across the country anduse this occasion as a family reunion.

“The residents are proud of their home andsurroundings,” began Carl Baker, Executive Director.“They look forward to inviting their family and friendsand having them experience the same lifestyle theyexperience on a daily basis.”

One of the most anticipated parts of the Garden Party isthe buffet. This year, Executive Chef, Aaron Torres, didnot disappoint. Highlights of the menu included carvingstations with beef tenderloin, shrimp cocktail, brie strudel,an outdoor ice cream station, and chocolate dippedstrawberries.

The focal point of the Great Lounge was a sculpturecreated by Sous Chef, Oscar Lacson. Oscar was inspired byhis 80th Anniversary banner design when he created“Birds of Paradise”. The sculpture included 160 chirpingbirds, 40 pounds of copper used for tree branches andbirds’ nests, and a wooden tree trunk. “Birds of Paradise”was reflective of our beautiful grounds. The stunningsculpture became the back drop for many family photos.

King-Bruwaert House has planned to construct a fenced-in dog park toaccommodate dogs living in the Woods. We want to make sure that all ofour dogs have a safe place to roam off their leash, get plenty of exercise, and socialize with other dogs. In addition, the dog park will give ownersa chance to mingle and relax on a bench that will be added in the park.

The dog park will be located at the east end of our property, behind thefruit trees. The plan includes a 60x24 fenced in area. The fence will stand4 feet off the ground; will be made of a brown chain link, and have a gate.We will include a bench for the pet owners to rest.

The total cost of the dog park would be around $3,000. One family hasalready given us $1,000 “seed money” for this project. We hope to raisethe rest and install the park in the spring.

“We invite all dogs, whether they live in the Woods or Godair Park, tocome play at the Dog Park,” said Carl F. Baker, Executive Director. “Werealize that your dogs are very special to you, and are part of the K-BHouse Family.”

If you have any questions about the Dog Park or are interested in makinga contribution to the Fund, please send your check to Julie Ryan, Directorof Development. Include “Dog Park” on the memo section of your check.

Dog Park Brings Furry Friends TogetherBy: Julie Ryan

“Gayle and I plan on donating a bench inmemory of our longtime friend and

companion, Tweed, a beautiful GoldenRetriever who recently passed away at

the age of twelve,” commented KenJohnson. “This bench will include aplaque featuring a Golden Retriever

engraved with Tweed’s name. We think this is a fitting tribute

to a wonderful dog.”

In an effort to educate our residents about new tax lawsand ways they can protect their assets, K-B Houseinvited back speaker, Mary Ann Sisco, Senior VicePresident, Director of Strategy & Innovation, fromNorthern Trust, to lead the presentation and answerquestions from the audience.

This year Mary Ann focused on the American TaxpayerRelief Act of 2012 (ATRA). An interesting point she

highlighted in her presentation that was relevant to our community dealt with qualified charitablecontributions from IRA’s. At age 70½ and up, investors are required to withdraw a certain amount from theirIRA. They can exclude from their income up to $100,000 they withdraw from their IRA as long as that incomeis donated to a charity. This law benefits the investor because they are required to take a distribution but donot have to pay tax on it. It also lowers investor’s total assets so they have less tax to pay after they die. Ofcourse, the charities are very grateful for the support they receive.

K-B House plans to host another financial seminar next fall.
